Denver Pyle / Jesse Duke

Fifteen years ago (from tomorrow...Christmas) we lost a great actor and a great person in Denver Pyle. I remember that day pretty clear and it felt as if I had lost my own uncle when I heard of his passing. We may have lost a great person, but Heaven gained an angel. Rest in Peace Denver...AKA Uncle Jesse.

I found this interesting bit of trivia. Here is part of the Bible verse 1 Samuel 16:11. And Samuel said to Jesse, "Are all the young men here?" Then he said, "There remains yet the youngest, and there he is, keeping the sheep."........ In this verse Jesse is not the shepherd, David is....But it is still cool that a shepherd and a guy named Jesse are in the same passage. Since Uncle Jesse loved the Good Book, he would have liked this verse.

I’ve been watching episodes of Murder, She Wrote for a while, since Angela Lansbury’s passing a couple months ago. Tonight I watched an episode called “Coal Miner’s Slaughter” (a play-on-words, referring to Loretta Lynn’s famous song “Coal Miner’s Daughter”). Anyway, it’s full of famous guest stars, including Denver Pyle...not only that, but he basically plays a version of ‘Uncle Jesse’, as the plot takes place in a small southern, mountain town! I used to think that Jesse Duke was the inventor of ethanol. After all, in the 1979 Georgia episode "High Octane" Jesse ran straight ethanol (aka moonshine) in Black Tillie. But today I saw an episode of Beverly Hillbillies where Grannie started an ambulance service and Jed asked her why Duke, the hound dog, had a container of XXX tied onto his collar. Last week I added to a thread called Videos with Peggy Rea, so I thought I'd start one for videos of Denver. I was going to begin with one of his westerns until I realized that his movie debut is available on YouTube. The name of the movie is 'The Guilt of Janet Ames', and its story centers around a war widow looking for the five men saved by her husband. She has a list of their names, and wants to find out if their lives were worth saving. Denver's part was uncredited, and IMDb just lists it as "Masher". in the episode where bo & luke drive the gambling rig, and uncle jessie gets shucked into gambling to get some money back for lou, where they show jessie shuffling the cards at the farm, it is actually john schnieder who is shuffling as denver could not do the shuffle trick that jessie could do that explains why the hands look so young!!!

I’m currently going through the 70s crime drama The Streets of San Francisco. Tonight I’m getting ready to watch the Season 2 episode “Winterkill”, from late 1973. One of the guest stars is Denver Pyle—without the beard, lol! I’m just starting it so don’t know yet if he’s good or bad...but I always enjoyed his guest spots on Perry Mason, and he played a variety of good & bad characters on there.

Without a beard donning mustache only Denver played Briscoe Darling on the Andy Griffith Show! Returning Role. With the same looked as Uncle Jesse Denver played Mad Jack with his companion Donkey Ole No. 7 on Grizzly Adams. Returning Role. Then on to the Dukes of Hazzard. Denver had tons of small cameo's on classic westerns as well.

I was messing around on Google and Utube, trying to find something the TV show "The life and times of the dukes of hazzard",and without success, i could not even find a trailer of this tv special. I have it on VHS, but I want it on dvd, and so far have not been successful. In my search I found something I never knew before, Denver Piles acted on a tv show I used to love to watch, it was Grisly Adams, y'all remember that show? Well Denver, was acting the part of Mad Jack, I could not believe it when I saw it? anyone know this? We were wondering who aunt lavinia was. We always thought she was Uncle Jesse's wife who had passed away, but then we saw an episode where he tells Bo and Luke to go stay with her and they mention that he hadn't spoke to her in 20 years. Would she be a sister then? Doesn't Daisy wear her wedding dress when she almost marries Enos? We're so counfused.

Today is January 11 which means that 4 months from now will mark 100 years that a cute little baby named Jesse Duke came into the world, born in the Duke farmhouse in Hazzard County Georgia. (historically correct in my mind at least)

Uncle Jesse, being one of my all time favorite, probably mymost favorite character on there, Luke with a close close second lol, Uncle Jesse, being the patriarch of the family, is my mentor because of his kindness and wisdom that he presents in the show to the boys and Daisy and ALL of Hazzard County. I try to live by,"What would Uncle Jesse do or say?" It seems my life runs smoother too? funny huh? well I wanted to know if Uncle Jesse is ya'll's mentor too, cause I know he's mine. I never said grace at the table til I watched the Dukes' and now I do. I always think of Uncle Jesse when I do or say something wrong, I remember that Uncle Jesse IS watching lol.

Did you know Denver was in a Gomer episode as Tomato Farmer? He sported his Mayberry Brisco Darling look from The Andy Griffith Show.

May 11th is Denver Pyle's birthday - mostly known around here as Uncle Jesse - the loving, caring Duke patriarch who had his hands full with his two young nephews and his neice. Denver was a very talented man who played several believeable parts in movies or in TV shows...he is missed. HAPPY BIRTHDAY DENVER ~ UNCLE JESSE!

I found this in the same book as I got the early pic of Sorrell. I think it's the only time I've seen Denver without any facial hair. The caption claims it to be from 1958, although IMDB gives the film (Good Day For A Hanging) as 1959. Apparently he plays Deputy Ed Moore.

The mis-spelling of Rosco's name on the banner in 'One Armed Bandits' was mentioned in the Ask Jimmie forum, but I can't find any mention of this one from 'Welcome Back, Bo 'n' Luke'.

Okay, so maybe i'm dense but has anyone else noticed Jesse's hat isn't a baseball cap as has been written in fanfictions and stuff? Its a deerhunter's hat (the ones that are usually furry with flaps hanging down by the ears_ with the flaps tied up on top!!! I actually had to pause to notice it, but I couldn't help but have a laugh at how I always thought it was a baseball cap!

I was in the kitchen cutting up some deer meat today and I heard my wife in the living Iiving room say Jessie Duke! Of course I thought she said Jesse Duke! I walked in to see her and she was reading a small magazine that was an advertisement, titled plexus XCEED. It is all about nutritional supplements. She showed me what she so was surprised about. It was a picture of one of their top sales people......Jessie Duke! She looked a little different than Jesse Duke.

I bought a DVD containing 6 or so episodes of The Andy Griffith Show recently. Subtitled The Best of Barney 1924 - 2006 or something like that I do believe. Was pleasantly surprised when a character appeared in the episode called The Darlings Are Coming turning out to be none other than Denver Pyle. Man, this is a funny funny episode of Andy Griffith and Denver really helps make it so damn funny.
