  1. I have to admit that I only had half an eye on most of the race because it clashed with the Montreal Grand Prix, but it did feel like there were more commercial breaks than previous races. There were exactly the same number of commercial breaks during the grand prix as usual - none! I was disappointed that Ricky seemed to lose about five places at each of the final cautions, but he did manage to beat (or should I say pass ) his girlfriend with about two laps to go.
  2. As Garrett said, this week it's the Party in the Poconos 400. The race is at 1:00 PM ET on Sunday. Garrett also mentioned that the qualifying had been washed out, so the starting lineup is based on current points: 1 Jimmie Johnson 2 Carl Edwards 3 Clint Bowyer 4 Matt Kenseth 5 Kevin Harvick 6 Dale Earnhardt Jr. 7 Kasey Kahne 8 Kyle Busch 9 Paul Menard 10 Brad Keselowski 11 Jeff Gordon 12 Aric Almirola 13 Greg Biffle 14 Mark Martin 15 Martin Truex Jr. 16 Ricky Stenhouse Jr. 17 Denny Hamlin 18 AJ Allmendinger 19 Tony Stewart 20 Kurt Busch 21 Joey Logano 22 Jamey McMurray 23 Ryan Newman 24 Jeff Burton 25 Juan Pablo Montoya 26 Marcos Ambrose 27 Casey Mears 28 David Ragan 29 Bobby Labonte 30 Danica Patrick 31 David Gilliland 32 Dave Blaney 33 David Stremme 34 David Reutimann 35 JJ Yeley 36 Josh Wise 37 Landon Cassill 38 Timmy Hill 39 Travis Kvapil 40 Joe Nemechek 41 Michael McDowell 42 Jason Leffler 43 Scott Riggs While I was looking for the lineup, I came across this interesting article: Ranking the 10 Greatest Mustaches in NASCAR History Garrett, can you guess which driver this quote is about?: "Long before [he] began to turn gray, long before he briefly sported a goatee and a shaved head, long before he began to look like a young(er) Jeff Foxworthy, he was just a kid in his early 20s with a terrible mustache."

  5. It was probably the CMT Awards. I couldn't find the clip where they discuss Paris Jackson, but I did find a short clip that includes John Schneider, Nelly, and Larry The Cable Guy: http://www.insideedition.com/videos/1530-on-the-cmt-red-carpet
  6. Don't forget that it's the Canadian Grand Prix this weekend - I thought I'd mention it as it's on at the US friendly time of 2.00 PM ET on Sunday (that's actually the time the race starts, not when they begin thinking about starting the engines). They had rain before first practice today, and there may be rain for qualifying and the race, and I hope there is. The rain-delayed race of 2011 was one of the most exciting races of recent years. The circuit has straights where the drivers hit 200 mph, a 45 mph hairpin bend and the infamous "Wall of Champions" that has ended the races of many top drivers in the past.
  7. Here it is: The original was a #1 hit in the UK and Ireland back in 1980:
  8. I've just Googled "Jim Hogg Cigars" to see if they're real. It looks like this is a genuine poster from the 1920s, although James Stephen "Big Jim" Hogg (20th Governor of Texas) died in 1906. Believe it or not, he named his daughter Ima Hogg (rumors that she had a sister called Ura are untrue). Ima and her brothers were more like Abraham Lincoln Hogg rather than Boss: when oil was discovered on their land in 1918, the Hoggs did not believe that the oil money was rightfully theirs, as it had come from the land and not hard work, and they were determined to use it for the good of Texas.
  9. Charles M. Schulz sure did know how to write a good quote. I like this one: "I never made a mistake in my life. I thought I did once, but I was wrong." or how about this one? "No problem is so big or so complicated that it can't be run away from!" I know Steven Wright is a comedian rather than an author, but I always liked this quote: "You know how it feels when you're leaning back on a chair, and you lean too far back, and you almost fall over backwards, but then you catch yourself at the last second? I feel like that all the time." But then we are talking about a man who said this: "I bought some powdered water, but I don't know what to add to it."

    NASCAR news

Well it looks like Brad got away with a six point penalty as predicted. NASCAR also fined crew chief Paul Wolfe $25,000. Penske Racing said Brad's car "experienced a part failure during Sunday's Dover race (that) resulted in the car's front end being too low when presented for postrace inspection." They do not plan to appeal the penalties. Full story here.
  11. You could be right, although I don't remember the word "GARAGE" appearing in any of the impound signs used in the show. I think this first one was recycled from 'The Hack of Hazzard', which used a different building. This one from season 6 is nearer the right size, but is a different style and clearly labeled "Chickasaw".
  12. But I agree with the text at the top of the picture . I thought they might have used one of the impound yard signs from the show to decorate their workshop, but it doesn't match any of the screengrabs I have. Maybe they got the props department to make one in a similar style.
  13. This first one seems to predict the internet and some of my experiences with it : "Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance." - George Bernard Shaw It's easy to doubt yourself once in a while: "Whenever people agree with me I always feel I must be wrong." - Oscar Wilde Maybe because my age is currently the same as the answer to "Life, the Universe and Everything" I can relate to these: "I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by." - Douglas Adams "A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools." - Douglas Adams Here's what George Bernard Shaw had to say about liars: "The liar's punishment is not in the least that he is not believed, but that he cannot believe anyone else."

    NASCAR news

I've just read a couple of articles which speculate that Brad Keselowski may just get a six point penalty as that's what Martin Truex Jr got for being too low at Texas. The previous penalty would be irrelevant because it's a different infraction. It would drop Brad from 8th to 10th, just a few points ahead of Jeff Gordon.
  17. I'm surprised they don't have an overhead camera angle to make things easier to see on restarts. In the Monaco Grand Prix last week there were a few occasions where drivers cut chicanes during overtaking moves. In F1 there's a rule that if you gain or keep a place by going off-track, you have to give up that place. If JJ had just been told to give the place back rather than getting black flagged, it might have worked out better. Do you want to re-phrase that - you make him sound like Chris Brown.
  18. I'm going to steal the whole title again . I don't know if this track is dubstep or drum and bass (or should that be drum 'n' bass?). Either way, I think it's the first of its genre in this thread. The video contains some '80s-style arcade machine action.
  19. I thought both drivers handled the incident with a lot more restraint than you see most of the time (no raised fists or thrown crash helmets). Ricky looked like he was on for a top ten finish after the last restart, but I suppose I can be reasonably happy with 13th. He did get the 'Lucky Dog' after the Gilliland/Newman crash. I'm always amused by the commentators making a big deal of the engines revving to 9,000 rpm. Some models of Honda's 2-seater sports car the S2000 revved to 9,200 rpm. F1 engines are currently limited to 18,000 rpm, but have been taken to 21,000 rpm in unrestricted testing.
  20. Sunday's race is the FedEx 400 benefiting Autism Speaks from Dover International Speedway. Here's the starting line-up: 1 Denny Hamlin 2 Martin Truex Jr 3 Kyle Busch 4 Matt Kenseth 5 Ryan Newman 6 Mark Martin 7 Kevin Harvick 8 Brad Keselowski 9 Joey Logano 10 Jamie McMurray 11 Kasey Kahne 12 Dale Earnhardt Jr 13 Kurt Busch 14 Juan Pablo Montoya 15 Clint Bowyer 16 Paul Menard 17 Casey Mears 18 Carl Edwards 19 Greg Biffle 20 Jeff Gordon 21 Landon Cassill 22 Tony Stewart 23 Ricky Stenhouse Jr 24 Jimmie Johnson 25 Austin Dillon 26 Bobby Labonte 27 David Reutimann 28 David Gilliland 29 Jeff Burton 30 Marcos Ambrose 31 Michael McDowell 32 Mike Bliss 33 Aric Almirola 34 David Stremme 35 David Ragan 36 Joe Nemechek 37 Dave Blaney 38 Travis Kvapil 39 Danica Patrick 40 J.J. Yeley 41 Josh Wise 42 Timmy Hill 43 Scott Riggs The race starts at 1:00 PM ET, and will be shown on Fox. Garrett, your drivers are starting either side of Ricky - they'd better not hit him at the start .

    Duck Dynasty

I'm old enough to remember when MTV showed music .
  23. Thanks for the updates, Garrett. I was only able to watch the race up to the first red flag. I've caught up with some of the incidents on NASCAR.com.

For anyone in the UK or Ireland who's interested in watching Duck Dynasty, it's coming to The History Channel on Thursday 30th May at 10 PM. I'm not sure how it counts as "history", but you can read more here: http://www.history.co.uk/shows/duck-dynasty.html
