    One Word Song Titles

I do like that Johnny Cash song, but fancied something more upbeat:
  2. I guess I'll have to keep my other "dog" songs in the kennel for now . I'm still stuck in the mid-60s this weekend: Non, Ce N'est Pas Un Rêve - Françoise Hardy For those of you who speak even less French than me, the title translates as "This Is Not A Dream" (that's my excuse for including it here - work from this for the next song). I found a couple of her albums among my father's records when I was young, and always liked this track. Only fairly recently did I discover that it's a cover of song by Samantha Jones called which was released a year earlier. The tunes are the same, but the lyrics are not a direct translation.
  3. He only ran a limited schedule last year, but he's hoping to run the majority of the season this year. His name is familiar to me because he took part in 28 F1 races in 2006/2007. He also drove for the USA team in the short-lived A1 Grand Prix series.
  4. Walking the Dog - Rufus Thomas I know Garrett's heart aint ready for the Rolling Stones (sorry, private joke), so I won't post their version, but I will include a cover by Jimmie Best's cousins.
  5. Thanks for your comments. I start with some screengrabs of places that look possible to identify, and then spend ages on Google, Google Maps, Google Earth, Bing Maps and Historic Aerials. Sometimes an appearance in another show can help too, as is the case with today's location. Y'all may have seen the pictures of the Duke Farm's appearance in 'Murder, She Wrote' that I posted a few weeks back. Well, it turned out that an episode a few days later led me to another Dukes filming location. I originally only watched 'The Bottom Line Is Murder' because of the guest stars: Adrienne Barbeau (Marcie in 'The Cannonball Run'), Judith Chapman (Kay Faulkner in 'The Fall Guy'), George Takei (Sulu in 'Star Trek'), and from Dukes, Pat Klous (T.C. Rogers in 'People's Choice'). Then I realized that the TV station (supposedly in Denver) was the same building as the one used as the Capitol City Hospital in 'The Boar's Nest Bears'. It was all there: low, flat-roofed white building with a distinctive wall either side of a shallow set of steps, and it even had a red curb. Unlike Dukes, 'Murder, She Wrote' also showed several other useful views. The second here shows a continuation of the wall and some previously unseen white/brick buildings behind. The third picture is a long view showing a taller building behind, and the last is a shot of the car park showing the end of the building behind the guard in the second (this building can be seen briefly in Dukes when Sheriff Little drives away, but it's quite blurry). This gave me a lot more to work with, and I knew I was looking for a larger complex, probably in the Santa Clarita area. There were far fewer buildings of this type when Dukes was filmed, so that narrowed down my search considerably. After ruling out the 'Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital' and the 'College of the Canyons', I found what I was looking for at the 'California Institute of the Arts' (or CalArts as it's usually known). Here's a picture I found taken from almost the same angle as the second one above. In the middle you can see the 'Roy G. Disney Music Hall' (the school was founded and created by Walt Disney in the early 1960s). It turns out that the building seen in Dukes has been used in several other productions too. Here it is in the 1979 movie 'The China Syndrome' starring Jane Fonda, Jack Lemmon and Michael Douglas. This is the nearest shot I could find of how it looks today (explore the campus for yourselves on Google Maps). CalArts alumni include actor David Hasselhoff, director Tim Burton, and Pixar chief creative officer John Lasseter. Many other Pixar staff also went to CalArts, and insert a secret "A113" into their movies as a reference to the classroom number used by graphic design and character animation students at the school.
  6. I doubt that I'll do any other government cars, but I'll probably do the state car and the Happy Birthday car.

  7. I was trying to work out how that would let rookie Ricky Stenhouse Jr. start 7th. According to NASCAR.com: "The starting grid will be determined by the NASCAR rule book, with the top 36 set by 2012 owners’ points and the remainder of the field set by owners’ points or qualifying attempts this season." So Ricky gets the place that Matt Kenseth's car finished in 2012. I'm guessing the rules change later in the season because Brad Keselowski said "That’s one of the perks, I guess, of being the champion in the first few races."
  8. I'm afraid that for this post I have to be the bearer of sad news. I'm sure y'all are familiar with the covered bridge at the Disney Golden Oak ranch that I dealt with in post #233. In that post I used a 45 degree aerial view because I usually find locations easier to spot when I look at them from an angle. Here's what the area looked like from directly overhead. If you noticed that I said "looked like" in the previous paragraph, it's because it doesn't look like that any more. When I looked at the area last week I happened to have the 45 degree view turned off, and found that the pond/lake seems to have been filled in and the bridge is missing. I guess it's progress. The ranch now includes two relatively new urban street sets and less rural buildings. I still think it's a shame to lose this iconic structure. As well as Dukes, you may remember it from other shows such as 'The Fall Guy' episode 'Mighty Myron' ... ... or the 'Murder She Wrote' episode 'Night of the Headless Horseman', amongst others.
  9. You had me confused for a while until I realized you meant 'Danger on the Hazzard Express' (Rosco doesn't visit the Duke Farm in 'Sittin' Dukes'). It's hard to capture in a still image, but all the brightest parts of the patrol car are visible just above it in a sort of ghost image. I'm guessing it's just some kind of anomaly caused by the camera lens. Maybe someone with some expertize in this area can explain it.
  10. Thanks Garrett. I found a article about it on the SpeedTV website, including an interview with John: 'Bo Duke’ Competes In ‘R U Faster Than a Redneck?' I doubt I'll get to see it unless someone puts it on YouTube - the old videos on that site aren't viewable where I live .
  11. I don't know whether Garrett plans a race review, but here's the top ten in tomorrow's lineup for the Subway Fresh Fit 500 at Phoenix: 1 Mark Martin (55) 2 Kasey Kahne (5) 3 Jimmie Johnson (48) 4 Kyle Busch (18) 5 Jeff Gordon (24) 6 Tony Stewart (14) 7 Kevin Harvick (29) 8 Denny Hamlin (11) 9 Matt Kenseth (20) 10 Ryan Newman (39) You can get the full lineup here. The race starts at 3 PM ET.
  12. I'm working my way through season 2 at the moment, hence why I was looking at the fairgrounds again. When I got to 'Dukes Meet Cale Yarborough' I was reminded of another location I needed to find: Hazzard Station. From a different angle it looks like there's an actual railroad next to it, so I thought I'd follow the railroad at Pine Street, and it wasn't long before I found a building matching the distinctive roofline above. It's located parallel to the main railroad, just south of Newhall Avenue, and even has a short (200 yard) section of track with a small steam engine (which I've since found used to belong to Gene Autry). A closer look with Street View confirmed I had the right building. A Panoramio picture gives a better view, and tells us that it's the former Saugus Station building which is now home to the SCV (Santa Clarita Valley) Historical Society. Normally that would be the end of the story, but in this case it isn't, because the old station building was only moved to its present location in mid-1980, ie. after 'Dukes Meet Cale Yarborough' was filmed. From the SCV website: The Saugus Station, built in 1887, was saved from demolition in 1980, when it became the first structure to be moved to Heritage Junction Historic Park, operated by the Santa Clarita Valley Historical Society at William S. Hart Park in Newhall — two miles south of the train station's original location. I followed the line north and found the original location just south of Drayton Street on Railroad Avenue. For those of you paying attention, you'll remember that Drayton Street was the location of the German Auto Center where the patrol car was swapped for an ambulance in 'Deputy Dukes' - you can remind yourselves here. The aerial view below is from 1977. Just for comparison, I'm including this picture of the building in its original location that I found on the SCV's comprehensive website. It's dated 1965, but gives a very similar view to the screengrab that started this post. The depot closed in 1978, so it had only been shut for about a year when Dukes was filmed. The SCV website has a larger version of this picture with additional information here and some pictures of the station being moved here. There's also another interesting picture I found on Flickr. It's dated 1980, just before the move, and clearly shows the "SAVE OUR STATION!" signs on the front of the building.
  13. Isn't it typical? I spent ages looking for a good shot of the generic version of the County Sheriff badge and then find another almost straight away. The screengrab below is from the 1994 Corey Eubanks movie 'Forced to Kill'. I spotted it when is was getting pictures of the post-Dukes Boar's Nest building for the Valencia Oaks Movie Ranch thread. I wonder if there are any more recent movies or TV shows that use it. As promised above, my Fan Art version of the 'Reunion' patrol car has now been posted in the Rosco's Patrol Car thread.

    Rosco's Patrol Car

I recently found better reference pictures for the center of the 'Reunion' patrol car badge, and promised to do a Fan Art version of it, so here it is. We've seen the 1977/78 Dodge Monacos in Hazzard livery before, but this one has a few changes. As well as the new badge, it also has A-pillar spotlights and new-style license plates on the front and back. You can see a bit more about the new badge here.
  15. I've been through most of season 3, and these are the best shots I've got so far. If you want to check for yourself, they're all from the last 10 minutes of 'Good Neighbors, Duke'. The first shows the pinstriping on the front fender. This is the clearest shot I could get of truck graphic on the door. It also shows the lightbar support. Here's a longer shot that shows the bottom of the door graphic and some more of the pinstriping. The last one is just for a close-up of the striping behind the door.
  16. I'm going back in time here. This song was originally written and performed in 1931, but the version in the video is from 1955. For those of you not familiar with Noël Coward as a playwright, composer, director and singer, maybe you'll remember him as Mr. Bridger in the original of 'The Italian Job'.
  17. The screengrab above is the only one of the truck graphics that I currently have, but I'll keep an eye out for other details. I think a hand-painted sign would finish the truck nicely, because the ones on the show were done that way.
  18. I read online that the Boar's Nest building was blown up in a 1994 movie called 'Forced to Kill'. I looked it up on IMDb, and found it stars Dukes stuntman Corey Eubanks, who also wrote and produced it. It also features Mickey Jones (B.B. Davenport in 'Granny Annie') and a brief appearance of fellow Dukes stuntman Al Wyatt Jr. Other stars include Michael Ironside ('Top Gun', 'Total Recall' etc.), Don Swayze (Patrick's brother), and Rance and Clint Howard (Ron's father and brother). I was surprised to discover the full movie on YouTube, but it's R-rated, so I won't post a link. What I will do is post a link to a short video featuring Corey talking about a stunt for the movie. The stunt shown takes place next to the Boar's Nest, but it's not visible in this clip: The Boar's Nest building does appear very briefly near the end of the movie, but, contrary to the report I read, only a vehicle blows up and not the building. I managed to get a couple of grabs which show it to be in a very rundown state; the roof is sagging and it looks like it's been left open to the elements. Knowing that the Google Earth timeline feature goes back to 1994 in this area, I decided to check it out. The image below is dated June 1st 1994, and shows a clear lot where the Boar's Nest once stood ("5" on the map). If the Boar's Nest was blown up, it must've been between the filming of 'Forced to Kill' and 1/6/94 - I'll keep looking!
  19. I've recently found myself watching the odd episode of 'Murder She Wrote', usually when there's a guest actor I want to see. For some reason, the TV channel that shows them here doesn't seem to show them in order, so it can be a bit hit and miss. The other day I got lucky, because the episode was 'The Coal Miner's Slaughter' (a play on the name of Loretta Lynn's autobiography). The name rang a bell because I'd mentioned it recently in the trivia thread. Loretta Lynn wasn't in it, but country singer and celebrity speed trap victim Hoyt Axton played the Sheriff. Toward the end of the episode I spotted a familiar sight: the Valencia Oaks Duke Farm. Sorry for the slightly blurry grabs - they're from a TV recording and not the usual DVD quality. It's easy to miss because there are only a few long shots, and they're from different angles to the ones used in Dukes. Here it is from the other side. This episode dates from 1988 - about two years after 'Knight Rider' set fire to the place (see above). As you can see, the front has a small fence and is obscured by trees. It's quite possible that the fire damage wasn't repaired, because the rest of the building doesn't look like it's in a great state of repair. Here's Jessica Fletcher (Angela Lansbury) approaching the old kitchen door. I didn't recognize any of the interior shots, so I'm not sure if it had been remodeled, or if they were filmed elsewhere. Now for the pièce de résistance of the episode. The building's resident was Eben Connors, played by Denver Pyle. It must've been strange for him going back there three years after Dukes finished. The main picture below shows him walking around the barn. I've inset a better picture of him with his on-screen granddaughter Molly Connors, played by a young Megan Mullally of 'Will & Grace' fame.
  20. Don't you turn 18 on that day too?
  21. Milk Duds From 'The Big Bang Theory' : Sheldon: Milk Duds, with their self-deprecating name and remarkably mild flavour, are the most apologetic of the boxed candies. Raj: Junior Mints are pretty apologetic. Sheldon: You're embarrassing yourself.
  22. I had a choice of "dog" songs, but eventually decided on this one from 1978: The song is about the work of British artist L.S. Lowry who was known for his paintings of industrial scenes and characteristic figures. You can see examples of his work throughout the video. In case anyone's wondering, "sparking clogs" were wooden clogs with metal bits in their soles to make them last longer. If you kicked them on the ground they'd make sparks. Girls in the mills had to work barefoot to prevent the risk of a fire or explosion. The painting below is 'Going to the Match' from 1953.
  23. I have one of these too. It's called the "Race Day General", and I think they only made 1000 of them. They come up on Ebay from time to time.
  24. If that's the case then they shouldn't abuse the DMCA. I can see the privacy issue, but I think it was an afterthought. I still don't see where NASCAR gets the right to make that decision.
