    One Word Song Titles

I have a couple of Americans to thank for letting me squeeze this song into the 'One Word Song Titles' thread. In 1985, Prefab Sprout released an album called 'Steve McQueen' that contained a track called 'Faron Young'. In the USA, this album was called 'Two Wheels Good,' after an objection from Steve McQueen's daughter, and the track 'Faron Young' was renamed 'Faron' for similiar reasons. Luckily, I bought an imported copy of the US album because it came with three bonus tracks. I found this quote by lead singer Paddy McAloon from 1992: “This shows you how stupid I am - it’s a song wondering why people like country & western music when they live in the industrial north [of England]. I thought, ‘Why do they listen to all these things about cowboys and farmers and grain?’ and then 20 years later, I suddenly think, ‘It’s because C&W deals with real emotions.’ Take that!â€

Happy Australia Day to Susan and any other HNet members from Down Under. The following commercial was shown on a UK TV program last night because A) the host is an Aussie (Adam Hills), and it's funny, and shows a type of commercial we don't really have in the UK and Ireland. Now a word of warning: Dick Smith made this commercial as a bit of fun for Australia Day, but the TV networks decided it was too rude for its alloted time slot. If you're likely to offended by a little innuendo based on the owner's first name, don't watch it!
  3. How about English? *course
  4. *thirty one years ago, surely?
  5. Here's another group of guys who first got famous in the '80s, and this lot can play their own instruments : I'm waiting for NKOTB to cover John Cage's 4'33" - I think I'd enjoy that .
  6. Last week I added to a thread called Videos with Peggy Rea, so I thought I'd start one for videos of Denver. I was going to begin with one of his westerns until I realized that his movie debut is available on YouTube. The name of the movie is 'The Guilt of Janet Ames', and its story centers around a war widow looking for the five men saved by her husband. She has a list of their names, and wants to find out if their lives were worth saving. Denver's part was uncredited, and IMDb just lists it as "Masher". I don't know whether masher is old slang or American slang, because I'd never heard it before (to me it's a kitchen utensil used with potatoes!). A quick look online told me it meant "a man who attempts to force his attentions on a woman". Although I didn't initially recognize him, there's only one character that fits that description, a he appears less than two minutes in. I'm sure I can hear a little of Uncle Jesse in his voice when he says "Buy you a little something to eat, maybe?". As well as being Denver's movie debut, it was also the second movie that Sid Caesar appeared in (he got third place in the billing!). The link below is actually for the YouTube playlist so you can easily watch all six parts: The Guilt of Janet Ames (1947) Here's a screengrab of the man I believe to be a 26- or 27-year-old Denver Pyle. The lady on the left is the eponymous Janet Ames, played by Rosalind Russell. After reading the introduction it probably won't surprise y'all to hear that the second video I've chosen is from a western. 'The Range Rider' ran for 78 episodes between 1951 and 1953, and Denver played various roles in 14 of them. The only one of his episodes I could find on YouTube is 'Rustler's Range' (S02E09) in which he played one the bad guys, Vincent Frost. There's nearly another Dukes connection in this episode - one of the henchmen was played by Al Wyatt Sr, father of Dukes stuntman Al Wyatt Jr (this episode aired at the start of 1952, about 10 months before Al Jr was born). NB. There's a short intro (1:45) before the episode starts. Here's a screengrab of Denver alongside Ruth Brady who played Thelma Frost:
  7. CDoherty probably knows this ranch better than me, but I could work out where you took some of the pictures. On your picture below, the Duke Farm would've been at the back of the flat area, although possibly just behind the hill on the left. I'd guess that the area around the Boars Nest site is still recognizable (if you can get there) - check out the screengrabs and aerial views in the Valencia Oaks Movie Ranch thread for reference points.
  8. From the classic 1971 album 'Tapestry': I Feel The Earth Move - Carole King The first time I heard this song it was actually Martika's 1989 cover version. Unfortunately for Martika it was released just before the San Fransisco earthquake, and some radio stations decided to pull the track from their playlists.
  9. Here's your links: Two Dollars In The Jukebox - Eddie Rabbitt I must listen to some more Eddie Rabbitt - I only have a few of his songs. For my turn I'm going for this:
  10. My last post contained a video with you in mind, and this is how you repay me? I'm counting the days to the new album! What a shame their tour isn't leaving North America again. Here's some smooth acid jazz from the '90s: Norman Cook (aka. Fatboy Slim) was behind this song that came to greater prominence after it featured in a commercial for Levi's 501s. There's even a bongo solo near the end .
  11. Thanks. I even checked a UK fan site for Kathryn Morris. There were screengrabs and links to the trailers, but no sign of any information about it being shown in the UK.
  12. I didn't even know that The Tokens had covered the song. You can listen to their 1970 version here. The song was written by Brian Wilson who recorded it with The Beach Boys and released it in 1964. According to Wikipedia, Brian was trying to capture the essence of his all-time favorite record, "Be My Baby" by the Ronettes (see a few of posts back). You can listen to The Beach Boys' version here. The song was also covered in 1977 by BJ Thomas, who changed the words a little. The video I found has an introduction that explains some of the different versions - skip to about 1:45 if you just want to hear the song. You can find it (I have a hunch that Garrett will like this video ).Other versions from the '70s include (1973), and The Who drummer, (1975).
  13. I guessed correctly . For me the star of the video was the beautiful 1970 Chevy Chevelle SS convertible (it should've had more screen time), although the Corvettes were quite nice too. The car is from Rick Hendrick's private collection and was custom built with a 6.2 liter supercharged LS9 V8 engine producing over 600 horsepower (no wonder the tires were smoking!). It can do a quarter mile in 12 seconds flat .
  14. This seems like a reasonable response to the request in the last post : This is version of the song I'm most familiar with, although if you'd prefer Bob Dylan's original, you can hear it here:
  15. Superior It's just that we seemed to be jumping randomly around the world like a Dukes of Hazzard cartoon spin-off series .
  16. Portugal There's been some dubious geography in this thread lately, so I thought I'd stick to the Iberian Peninsula .

    One Word Song Titles

I need an antidote to all this NKOTB - how about some Italian-American post-disco performed by a pop-dance act created by a French-Italian businessman? : Performing lead vocals for Change proved to be the long-desired career breakthrough for soul legend Luther Vandross.
  18. The Hallmark Channel no longer exists in the UK and Ireland. It was re-branded to Universal Channel in 2010, and now just shows re-runs of programs like 'Law and Order' and 'CSI', so my chances of seeing this movie are virtually nil . I'll have to keep checking schedules and other resources - maybe someone will post it on YouTube.
  19. Here's a very '60s-sounding song from Johnny Depp's ex-partner. Despite the retro sound and title, it has nothing to do with . This one was written by Lenny Kravitz (who she was dating at the time).
  20. I'm not jealous - much! I hope you have a great time and look forward to seeing the pictures.
  21. To dovetail with my last post I thought I'd include a link to Peggy Rea's first appearance in the last show she was in. The series was 'Grace Under Fire' (1993), and Peggy played Grace's interfering mother-in-law, Jean Kelly. Throughout the five seasons Peggy appeared in 51 episodes (nearly half). It looks like this was the first series created by Chuck Lorre, who went on to create 'Cybill', 'Dharma & Greg', 'Two and a Half Men', and 'The Big Bang Theory'. The link below is for YouTube, so hopefully everyone can see this one. Of course, it may get taken down. The video quality isn't the best, even at 480p, but it's quite watchable. Hopefully one of my local TV stations will show this again one day, or it'll get a full DVD release. Grace Under Fire Undergraduate Part One Here's a screengrab of Peggy with her on-screen daughter-in-law, Grace (Brett Butler):

I think I've figured out the kind of commercials you like : That's a lovely Camaro SS convertible he's driving in the second one.
  23. This song was supposedly written by Sheryl Crow (and Jeff Trott) about her ex-boyfriend, Eric Clapton. I thought it'd be fun to post the live version where Sheryl guest stars with Eric: (Live with Eric Clapton) I'm gonna miss it too . I'm hoping the news is that they're entering a monastic order and taking a vow of silence .
  24. Today (1/19/13) marks the 60th anniversary of Peggy Rea's first TV appearance. She played the part of a nurse in an episode of 'I Love Lucy' called 'Lucy Goes to the Hospital'; as mentioned above, it was the first of four appearances in the second season of the show. The YouTube link in my previous post no longer works, but those of you in the US can watch the whole of this episode on Hulu. If that link gives you any problems, try these for TV.com or Yahoo. I'd like to thank MeadowMufn for testing those links as I was unable to do so. Here's how Peggy looked back in 1953 - she's the dark-haired nurse behind Desi. Although you may not instantly recognize her from the picture, if you watch the episode, you're sure to recognize her voice (MeadowMufn and I did anyway). Peggy's second appearance was three episodes later in 'The Club Election'. She played one of the members of the women's club, and had a couple of lines. You'd be forgiven for thinking that the next screengrab was from the same episode as the one above. Peggy seems to be wearing the same outfit, albeit with a different hat and earrings. It's actually from 'No Children Allowed', another three episodes later. The lady on the left is Ethel Mertz (Vivian Vance), Lucy's friend and neighbor. For her last appearance, Peggy once again played a member of the women's club who come to Lucy's for a game of bridge. She's only in the opening scene, and the picture below is the only time she's seen head-on. The YouTube link above may be dead, but this episode is also available on Hulu (if you live in the US!).

Ireland has had damp, miserable weather this week, but just across the water in the UK they've had snow. Watching the pictures on the news reminded me of this award winning commercial from 1964:
