I also watch Hogan's Heroes. I think the difference there is that the Nazis are portrayed as the bad guys, and are always the butt of the joke. Of course, the flag was ridiculed in the 2005 Dukes movie, but the less said about that the better.

A little more on the swastika from the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum website: The swastika has an extensive history. It was used at least 5,000 years before Adolf Hitler designed the Nazi flag. The word swastika comes from the Sanskrit svastika, which means “good fortune” or “well-being." The motif (a hooked cross) appears to have first been used in Neolithic Eurasia, perhaps representing the movement of the sun through the sky. To this day it is a sacred symbol in Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Odinism. It is a common sight on temples or houses in India or Indonesia. Swastikas also have an ancient history in Europe, appearing on artifacts from pre-Christian European cultures.

I see Fox News headed it "Crazy Video" (although they could probably put that on most of their videos). The ranting woman seemed to assume she was speaking for everyone of her color, despite the fact that at least one of the people she ranted at disproved this. To mix up a few quotes I found on the Internet, everyone has the right to be offended, no one has the right never to be offended, and just because you are offended doesn't make you right. I've had a busy few weeks, so I spent today doing my laundry and watching the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. It was just the relaxing day I needed .

After watching a documentary about Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band earlier tonight (it was released 50 years ago this week, in case you missed it), I was listening to songs from the album. As I was reading the post above, "Getting Better" came on! The song was actually inspired by a quote by Jimmie Nicol, a drummer who temporarily played with the Beatles for a couple of weeks during 1964 while Ringo was ill. Anyway, I hope you return to health soon, MM, and congratulations on being Fan of the Month. I'm sure you'd have won it sooner if you'd just tried a little harder .

I'm watching re-runs of Hogan's Heroes as I type this. Werner Klemperer, the son of a Jew who fled Nazi Germany in the 1930s, only agreed to play Col. Klink on the condition that his schemes didn't work and he ended up looking stupid. Of course, the swastika was an established symbol long before the Nazies appropriated it. They could've had a Dukes episode dealing specifically with racism. There are a couple of episodes of M*A*S*H on the subject, one where the racist gets his comeuppance and one where the racist reconsiders his views. Having said that, looking back at the way equal rights was handled in 'Share and Share Alike', maybe I'm glad that Dukes didn't tackle the subject head on.
