RogerDuke Posted January 21 Author Report Posted January 21 It got down to 5 above last night but my neighbor said his thermometer said 4 below. After tomorrow it's supposed to get warmer every day for several days. The wind hasn't been bad but from watching the news it sounds like it's bad closer to Lake Erie. I'm 15 miles inland. Quote
RogerDuke Posted January 22 Author Report Posted January 22 Wow! 4 degrees in Lafayette Louisiana. Quote
HossC Posted January 22 Report Posted January 22 It's warmer than that here, although we're due to drop just below freezing point again on Friday. The real problem is the red weather warning for wind on Friday when 'Storm Éowyn will probably be among the "severest storms" that Ireland has ever seen'. Hobie Hartkins and RogerDuke 1 1 Quote
Hobie Hartkins Posted January 22 Report Posted January 22 It was 6 degrees here today.....not a normal Tennessee day! RogerDuke 1 Quote
Spike Posted January 23 Report Posted January 23 On our way out the door this morning it was -3 degrees F wind-chill/feels like -15 to -20. The stray cats near work made it through, fed them and gave them fresh non frozen water on 1st break. This weekend will feel balmy in the mid 30's. RogerDuke and Hobie Hartkins 2 Quote
HossC Posted January 23 Report Posted January 23 Everyone is battening down the hatches over here. All of the outdoor jobs where I work have been cancelled, and us office staff aren't due in until 10 if the red weather warning is over. All the schools are closed tomorrow, and most of the stores are shut until mid-morning. I know this is a regular occurrence in some states, but it's new to us in Ireland. To lighten the mood, a couple of weather-related jokes (although they both involve death!): Swedish astronomer, mathematician and physicist Anders Celsius died in 1744 aged 42. His rival, Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit claimed he was actually 107. The inventor of the wind chill factor died recently. He was 82, but felt like he was 64. RogerDuke and Hobie Hartkins 2 Quote

Doubtful it will make the national news here with everything going on. I see Los Angeles is burning big again. Quote

It's only a couple of miles from Castaic Junction and Six Flags Magic Mountain, both of which were used as Dukes filming locations. RogerDuke 1 Quote

They're saying that over 700,000 homes and businesses are without power in Ireland. Other than that, only one fence panel down. I'm heading out soon. RogerDuke 1 Quote

Good thing you don't need electricity to run a moonshine still. Keep us updated. I've been repeating that wind chill joke. So funny! Hobie Hartkins 1 Quote
HossC Posted January 24 Report Posted January 24 Ireland's highest ever wind was recorded last night at 183km/h (114mph), beating the previous record of 182km/h set in 1945. Miraculously, despite all the damage, I've only seen one reported death - a driver was killed early this morning when a tree fell on his car in Co. Donegal. I think we're in for a cold and wet weekend, but the worst has gone where I live. There are still a lot of people with power, and some without water. Hobie Hartkins and RogerDuke 2 Quote
HossC Posted January 27 Report Posted January 27 Although the strongest of the high winds appear to have gone, we're not out of the woods yet. Our part of town had another power cut last night, this time lasting just over seven hours. Mind you, I can't really complain as over 200,000 properties have been without power since Friday and it might be several more days before some get it back. The electric company is even shipping in crews from the UK, France and the Netherlands to get things moving again. We got away lightly where I live! Hobie Hartkins and RogerDuke 2 Quote
RogerDuke Posted January 28 Author Report Posted January 28 Glad to hear you made it through Hoss. Thanks for the updates. Exciting day around here. We are getting a puppy today! Picking her up at 3:00. Hobie Hartkins 1 Quote
RogerDuke Posted January 30 Author Report Posted January 30 Our puppy was born on August 28th. That means she turns 1 on the day Enos turns 90. Her name is Lulu so she has 2 Dukes connections. Hard to believe Sonny will be 90! Hobie Hartkins 1 Quote
Hobie Hartkins Posted January 31 Report Posted January 31 very true! I wonder if he still looks as young as he did? RogerDuke 1 Quote

Spike Posted Saturday at 07:07 PM Report Posted Saturday at 07:07 PM Is it spring yet? Kind of had my fill of all these freezing rain snow freezing rain snow freezing rain snow storms. Took 20 minutes to break into one of the cars Thursday morning because they were both encased in an ice snow ice blob. RogerDuke and Hobie Hartkins 1 1 Quote

RogerDuke Posted Sunday at 04:08 AM Author Report Posted Sunday at 04:08 AM Since the thread is titled The last 24 hours that's how long I've gone without eating...29 to be precise. I still can't even look at food without feeling nauseated. I either got food poisoning or the norovirus. Last night was absolutely brutal. Hopefully I will have an appetite for snacks for the big race tomorrow. Spike and Hobie Hartkins 1 1 Quote
Spike Posted Sunday at 12:09 PM Report Posted Sunday at 12:09 PM The flu has hit my work hard the past few weeks. Made it kind of interesting as the boss sent the one coworker home. Other coworkers told me boss has never done that, even during COVID . We all think it's due to the one coworker recently finding out they have cancer and they're trying to work as much as they can before chemo treatments. Hope you feel better today Roger. Looking outside this morning I see we got more freezing rain and now it's snowing again. RogerDuke 1 Quote

RogerDuke Posted yesterday at 02:49 AM Author Report Posted yesterday at 02:49 AM Finally ate something. Still exhausted though. Good thing it doesn't take much energy to watch NASCAR. That's about all I had the energy to do. New puppy Lulu didn't understand why I didn't want to roughhouse. Hobie Hartkins 1 Quote
