In Ireland, Paddy is a very common familiar name for people called Patrick (which is the Anglicized version of the name Pádraig). That's why St. Patrick's Day is normally called Paddy's Day (never call it Patty's Day to an Irishman!). The Irish also have a sense of humor about Paddy wagons - for over 20 years there's been a Dublin-based company offering bus tours of Ireland that goes by the names Paddywagon Tours.
