    Across the Pond

Because I'm still close to the UK, I'm usually identified as English, and that's fine with me (although I didn't celebrate St George's Day on Thursday!). My nationality is British, and that's probably how I'd be known further from home where people aren't so familiar with the differences between the Home Nations.

  2. Oh! Hey! You guys remember...next month we will have the second annual Moonshine 400!! Be getting ready!! Garrett will be defending his championship but I imagine there's a few of us around, who will have something to say about that!

  5. Hey y'all. I've been around here and there, just not logged in. Sorry to abandon y'all. I saw my name and it caught my eye. LOL. Thank you for remembering me. Sounds fun! Though I haven't been on my computer as much as I was a year ago, so I may not be able to post as much as before. I'm always ready to extend my winning streak.

    Shot phone

Although I use my phone to check HNet when I'm out of the house, I make well over 90% of my contributions from a laptop. The ability to easily switch between multiple tabs and multiple sources, and having an actual keyboard to type on means that I can't imagine getting nearly as involved with smaller devices. Roger, I don't know how big your tablet is, but I'm sure the larger screen benefits your viewing of photos and videos.

  7. Sorry but I have an astronomy event to go to in a place called Clarion Pennsylvania. I'll jump a creek on the way down though just to get in the spirit of DOHD. Yeeeehawwww!

  8. Well fellow Hazzardites....it's DOHD once again! ( Dukes Of Hazzard Day). I'm going to have to pick up my wife later and then I'll come back and open a new 15pk. case of Milwaukee's Best Ice ( Ice beer is my fav.! ) and I'll watch some of season 6 tonight and might get into season 7...don't know....I'll probably be back on here later as I watch the show and....uh.....celebrate the holiday! Hey cousins! You guys need to get on here with me on DOHD and celebrate with me! Roger, you can celebrate with Buttermilk! We can all get wild and party on Friday night, the official DOHD !!

If my math is correct, that's 10am my time which is fine with me. I'll be at work, so wouldn't normally have a chance to check HNet mid-morning.

  12. I'm a night owl, so that won't be a problem. Mid-week it is. How about a Wednesday or Thursday around 2am my time? It'll probably be sometime this summer. I have a lot going on right now. Lots of doctor's appointments. If all goes well, the summer should be pretty quiet. Good time to do the update.

    General in Ireland

They're virtually unknown over here, and so far I've only seen them at this show. The guy goes by the name 'Cranky Yankee'. I've just checked his Facebook page, and apparently he'll be closer to where I live a couple of times over the summer.

    Across the Pond

Why Are The British So Eccentric In War? That's the question posed in this video. It tells the story of why you can always make tea in a British tank, and of the soldier who went into battle in Operation Market Garden (the failed attempt to take the bridge in Arnhem as dramatized in the movie 'A Bridge Too Far') with an umbrella.

  32. NASCAR is at my favorite track today! It's Bristol, baby! (Darrell Waltrip use to say that.) Anyway, it's a track I've been at. Not for NASCAR, but when the Dukes had their Dukefest there. 35. I've just checked out their website - luraycaverns.com - and they're very impressive. One thing that confused me - if they were discovered in 1878, why does the tour guide wear an 18th century costume (I'm quoting the video)? That would date from at least 79 years before the caves were discovered!

  37. We went down to our daughter's in Winchester Virginia Thursday (home of Patsy Cline) but didn't really have any plans to do anythjng in particular. We go there at least twice a year and have pretty much done everything in the area but had never been to Luray Caverns. (It is unbelievable!) When we were leaving I remembered that Cooter's was somewhere near there so my daughter looked it up and we were only 7 miles away! We didn't stay long because I was the only person of 6 who was interested but it was incredible. I almost want to call it a spiritual experience but that bothers me a little to use that word since I believe in God but that place is definitely Hazzard Heaven on Earth. I am going to keep an eye on the schedule and go down again next time they have a big event. I hate to travel but who knows what will happen to the place after Ben passes on to Hazzard Heaven so I definitely want to go back for something big. BTW Ben wasn't there. He lives 45 minutes away though. I tried to get some people to join HazzardNet but see they haven't yet. I am still in awe over Cooter's. You would think that you couldn't top something like Luray's Cavern. It is one of the most amazing natural wonders on Earth. But Crazy Cooter pulled it off just a few minutes later.

    Howdy y’all

Always great to make memories ain’t it? You and your brother will cherish that time forever. My dad and I went to a few local car shows in our time too, he liked his cars but he really loved art. He was a painter, he did those paint by numbers kits, and managed to do 50 of em. He gave a lot of em away a few years ago, but the handful he kept are now proudly hanging on my walls.

Hi Roger, I was very blessed to have him, and I hope I do him proud. He definitely passed the tradition on to me, and I hope someday I’m blessed enough to do the same, should I be blessed with fatherhood. You’re not too personal, don’t worry. Actually my name is Thomas, but I shorten it to Tom these days. When I signed up here and thought of a username, I figure Tom Duke has a nice ring to it. Never realized about the parallel with Tom Wopat, kinda cool as he’s my favourite of the Duke Boys.

  42. Dad instilled a love of cars in me. He used to take me to cruisin' 50's night in high school and when I was little we went to the Harrah's Auto Museum in Sparks, NV on vacation. That was a treat. Dad had dementia for his last years, but my brother and I managed to get him to the Palos Verdes Concours d'Elegance and the Petersen Automotive Museum a few years ago. We had a blast, made some great memories, and took lots of photos.

British English often comes with subtext and inferred meanings whereas American English tends to be more direct. Here's a video by an American who's been living in the UK for a while. In it, she describes some of the phrases that initially confused her.

  50. Sounds like great fun, Hoss. It's been a long time since I've been to a car show. My dad used to take me a lot when I was younger. And then there were Cruisin' 50's nights every Friday in the summer. Fun times.
