I don't read a lot of fiction. If I do pick up a book, it's likely to be a biography or a book about WWII. Having said that, I do have a few favorites: Douglas Adams - Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy/Dirk Gently. Ian Fleming - James Bond novels. Alistair MacLean - various action thrillers. Spike Milligan - war diaries, blurring the line between fact and fiction, but very funny.
