  1. I don't know why they didn't use the Warner Brother's backlot for this movie, maybe it was being used for something else. Instead, they used another familiar location, the town of Piru. Piru featured a few times in the TV series, including a very prominent role during the race in 'Luke's Love Story'. For comparison, and a map, check out posts 272 to 274 of this thread. I'll go through these roughly in the order they appear in the movie. The first shows Rosco, Flash, Bo, Luke and Uncle Jesse outside the large house used by the race observer in 'Luke's Love Story'. Just off to the right there's a sign saying "HAZZARD COUNTY INN". This is Piru's Post Office, diagonally across the road from the house above. The guy with his hand in the air is Old Man Abernathy, Boss's opponent in the upcoming election. This is the church where we first get to meet Enos and Daisy. In reality, it's Piru United Methodist Church on Center Street. This location wasn't used in the TV series, but it's just past the church on Center Street. As you can see from the signs in this picture and the previous one, Piru Elementary School is between the two. On the right is the La Verne Nursery, although the camera angle never really shows it. In real life, Boss Hogg's ice cream truck would be heading for a dead end as Center Street only continues for a couple of hundred yards past this point.
  2. Today's posts take me somewhere I hadn't planned to go: 'The Dukes of Hazzard: The Beginning'. I've only seen it once before, and that was when it was first shown on TV. I'd assumed that it had nothing to do with the TV show except for getting the car right, but then I saw the trailer on the 'Reunion' DVD and realized that it shared a couple of filming locations. I apologize for the more-blurry-than-normal images - they're taken from a TV recording rather than the usual DVDs. I'll start with a location about 30 yards from where the TV series was filmed. This is the entrance to Boss Hogg's mansion, although the mansion itself was filmed elsewhere. The road on the other side of the gate is West Potrero Road, which did appear on the TV show. Here's a better view of the gate, which I'm pretty sure was fitted for the movie (there's a different one there now, anyway). This house is actually next door to the one I featured recently in the Valencia Oaks Movie Ranch thread (see 2nd, 3rd and 4th pictures - it was in the 'Knight Rider' episode that also featured the TV Duke Farm and Boar's Nest). Coincidentally, that house also appeared in last night's 'Murder She Wrote', a 1986 episode that featured Hughie Hogg's genie, Katherine Moffat. Unsurprisingly, West Potrero Road hasn't changed much since the movie, as you can see here (spin to the left to see the current gates). According to the dialog, the General got onto two wheels by Bo and Luke leaning over - need I say more about the script?! I'll finish my West Potrero Road pictures with this shot which shows the familiar white fencing that featured in many episodes of the TV series.

  4. Another slice of the '80s :
  5. One of the top YouTube comments for this song says "Back when soul music had soul...timeless." - that pretty much says it all. I'm going to have to specify the exclusions next time .
  6. We haven't done a theme for a while - how about songs with "Back" in the title?

  9. This thread just caught my eye when I was seeing who was online, and it sounded so similar to a story I'd read a few hours ago it was uncanny. In the early hours of this morning there was a fire at a nightclub in Santa Maria, Brazil. The source of the fire is believed to have been fireworks lit by the band. The death toll currently stands at 232, with a similar number of injuries. It's sad how history repeats itself. Fire at Brazil club kills more than 230 ...
  10. A month or so later than planned I've finally got around to the first of the TV movies. It may appear that several types of patrol car were used in the 'Reunion' movie, but they recycled quite a bit of footage from the series. For the new shots Cletus and Rosco drive 1977/78 Dodge Monacos, similar to those that appeared in the series. I say similar because I spotted a few differences, including the A-pillar spolights which were previously reserved for other counties. Cletus's car gets a new license plate, "20CE265", which appears on the front and back (in the series a Confederate flag was fitted to the front). The final exterior change I noticed is the star on the door. The series cars just had "COUNTY SHERIFF" around the logo with "HAZZARD COUNTY" on a strip underneath. As you can see from the inset, the words "HAZZARD COUNTY SHERIFF" are now all on the star. The center image of the scales has been replaced with a logo that looks remarkably like the center of the Roseville badge. Even more strangely, the new badge is very similar to one that appeared a couple of times in 'The Fall Guy' - see here for a side-by-side comparison. Here's a picture of Rosco and Flash inside one of the 'Reunion' patrol cars. The silver handle for the A-pillar spotlights is just visible to the right of the steering wheel. The patterned fabric interiors that appeared in the series have been replaced with a plain beige/tan one (with a little dark brown piping on the seats). Was this a civilian spec, or just an alternative finish? - answers on a postcard please .
  11. Check out the Valencia Oaks Movie Ranch thread - you'll find maps like the one below and screengrabs from Dukes and Knight Rider. The screengrabs were mainly taken at ground level, so even if the vegetation has changed, you should still be able to recognize the surrounding hills. The map also shows you where Tom Sarmento's shop was. The top right of the blue line is where the realtor's board is on The Old Road.
  12. That Waylon link works fine for me . All these wolves have left me a little scared. First I was afraid, I was petrified ... Disco not your thing? You could try a very different cover version by Cake.

    One Word Song Titles

I have a couple of Americans to thank for letting me squeeze this song into the 'One Word Song Titles' thread. In 1985, Prefab Sprout released an album called 'Steve McQueen' that contained a track called 'Faron Young'. In the USA, this album was called 'Two Wheels Good,' after an objection from Steve McQueen's daughter, and the track 'Faron Young' was renamed 'Faron' for similiar reasons. Luckily, I bought an imported copy of the US album because it came with three bonus tracks. I found this quote by lead singer Paddy McAloon from 1992: “This shows you how stupid I am - it’s a song wondering why people like country & western music when they live in the industrial north [of England]. I thought, ‘Why do they listen to all these things about cowboys and farmers and grain?’ and then 20 years later, I suddenly think, ‘It’s because C&W deals with real emotions.’ Take that!â€

    Commercials

Happy Australia Day to Susan and any other HNet members from Down Under. The following commercial was shown on a UK TV program last night because A) the host is an Aussie (Adam Hills), and it's funny, and shows a type of commercial we don't really have in the UK and Ireland. Now a word of warning: Dick Smith made this commercial as a bit of fun for Australia Day, but the TV networks decided it was too rude for its alloted time slot. If you're likely to offended by a little innuendo based on the owner's first name, don't watch it!
  15. How about English? *course
  16. *thirty one years ago, surely?
  17. Here's another group of guys who first got famous in the '80s, and this lot can play their own instruments : I'm waiting for NKOTB to cover John Cage's 4'33" - I think I'd enjoy that .
  18. Last week I added to a thread called Videos with Peggy Rea, so I thought I'd start one for videos of Denver. I was going to begin with one of his westerns until I realized that his movie debut is available on YouTube. The name of the movie is 'The Guilt of Janet Ames', and its story centers around a war widow looking for the five men saved by her husband. She has a list of their names, and wants to find out if their lives were worth saving. Denver's part was uncredited, and IMDb just lists it as "Masher". I don't know whether masher is old slang or American slang, because I'd never heard it before (to me it's a kitchen utensil used with potatoes!). A quick look online told me it meant "a man who attempts to force his attentions on a woman". Although I didn't initially recognize him, there's only one character that fits that description, a he appears less than two minutes in. I'm sure I can hear a little of Uncle Jesse in his voice when he says "Buy you a little something to eat, maybe?". As well as being Denver's movie debut, it was also the second movie that Sid Caesar appeared in (he got third place in the billing!). The link below is actually for the YouTube playlist so you can easily watch all six parts: The Guilt of Janet Ames (1947) Here's a screengrab of the man I believe to be a 26- or 27-year-old Denver Pyle. The lady on the left is the eponymous Janet Ames, played by Rosalind Russell. After reading the introduction it probably won't surprise y'all to hear that the second video I've chosen is from a western. 'The Range Rider' ran for 78 episodes between 1951 and 1953, and Denver played various roles in 14 of them. The only one of his episodes I could find on YouTube is 'Rustler's Range' (S02E09) in which he played one the bad guys, Vincent Frost. There's nearly another Dukes connection in this episode - one of the henchmen was played by Al Wyatt Sr, father of Dukes stuntman Al Wyatt Jr (this episode aired at the start of 1952, about 10 months before Al Jr was born). NB. There's a short intro (1:45) before the episode starts. Here's a screengrab of Denver alongside Ruth Brady who played Thelma Frost:
  19. CDoherty probably knows this ranch better than me, but I could work out where you took some of the pictures. On your picture below, the Duke Farm would've been at the back of the flat area, although possibly just behind the hill on the left. I'd guess that the area around the Boars Nest site is still recognizable (if you can get there) - check out the screengrabs and aerial views in the Valencia Oaks Movie Ranch thread for reference points.
  20. From the classic 1971 album 'Tapestry': I Feel The Earth Move - Carole King The first time I heard this song it was actually Martika's 1989 cover version. Unfortunately for Martika it was released just before the San Fransisco earthquake, and some radio stations decided to pull the track from their playlists.
  21. Here's your links: Two Dollars In The Jukebox - Eddie Rabbitt I must listen to some more Eddie Rabbitt - I only have a few of his songs. For my turn I'm going for this:
  22. My last post contained a video with you in mind, and this is how you repay me? I'm counting the days to the new album! What a shame their tour isn't leaving North America again. Here's some smooth acid jazz from the '90s: Norman Cook (aka. Fatboy Slim) was behind this song that came to greater prominence after it featured in a commercial for Levi's 501s. There's even a bongo solo near the end .
  23. Thanks. I even checked a UK fan site for Kathryn Morris. There were screengrabs and links to the trailers, but no sign of any information about it being shown in the UK.
  24. I didn't even know that The Tokens had covered the song. You can listen to their 1970 version here. The song was written by Brian Wilson who recorded it with The Beach Boys and released it in 1964. According to Wikipedia, Brian was trying to capture the essence of his all-time favorite record, "Be My Baby" by the Ronettes (see a few of posts back). You can listen to The Beach Boys' version here. The song was also covered in 1977 by BJ Thomas, who changed the words a little. The video I found has an introduction that explains some of the different versions - skip to about 1:45 if you just want to hear the song. You can find it (I have a hunch that Garrett will like this video ).Other versions from the '70s include (1973), and The Who drummer, (1975).
  25. I guessed correctly . For me the star of the video was the beautiful 1970 Chevy Chevelle SS convertible (it should've had more screen time), although the Corvettes were quite nice too. The car is from Rick Hendrick's private collection and was custom built with a 6.2 liter supercharged LS9 V8 engine producing over 600 horsepower (no wonder the tires were smoking!). It can do a quarter mile in 12 seconds flat .
