There are some familiar names from F1 in that list. Mercedes have been the dominant team for a few years now After a disastrous re-entry into the sport with McLaren, Honda's engines seem to be coming good with Red Bull. This season has seen the return of the Alfa-Romeo name when they took over the Sauber team. There were also stories that VW planned to enter F1 before "Dieselgate". Audi had success a few years ago with their LMP cars at Le Mans, but now seem to mainly compete in the German DTM series. BTW. F1 used to be a mix of V8s, V10s and V12s, but is now restricted to V6s.
  2. Warner Bros' own online store want $134.99 for the set! Amazon describe it as a 33-disc set, whereas previous sets have been 38 or 40 discs. Maybe they've used double-sided discs like some seasons of the region 2 release (I've never counted how many discs I have). I just hope they didn't reduce the quality to squeeze more episodes on each disc (I've read about this with other shows).
  3. Well, congratulations to the USA for their win. England only managed fourth. Roger, I can see why soccer would be popular with American kids. The only equipment you need to play is a ball. Then you can go to the park and use the proverbial jumpers (sweaters) for goalposts, and you have a game. It may last 20 minutes, or I've seen them go on all afternoon with people coming and going. There may also be the attraction of playing an truly international sport. The four that you mentioned are still predominately played in North America (although MLB played their first competitive fixture in Europe just over a week ago with a game in London). The USA women's soccer team can now say that they're the best in the world (again).

  5. I assume you mean the Women's World Cup in soccer (and not the current Cricket World Cup where England are through to the semi-finals ). The USA continue to have a strong team, and beat England's Lionesses the other night. Now the USA are up against Roth and Lemmamoon's Netherlands in Sunday's final. England play Sweden tomorrow night in the play-off for third place. Is soccer finally becoming popular in the US? I'm sure the success of the women's team has helped to raise its profile.
  6. Welcome to HNet, Lemmamoon.
  7. I didn't want to post earlier in case I jinxed the weather, but I've just got back from a barbecue. In the end, the weather was mainly good, although there were a few showers. Of course, we now have a beautiful sunny evening. The barbecue was billed as a Festival of Cultures, with people from various different local communities coming together for a family fun day. It was good catching up with several people I know through my old job, and people from other places that I haven't seen for a while. There was even a current and ex-local councillor there. I think they ended up with some food left over, even though I did my best to eat the chicken, sausages, corn, pasta, salad etc. I'm sure it went to a good home! It's only just over a week since my last barbecue, and I think the area where I live are planning one for later in the summer.

Here in Ireland (and in several other countries in Europe), sales of new petrol (gas) and diesel engined cars will be banned by 2030. In Ireland, they are currently saying that all petrol and diesel cars will effectively be forced off the roads by 2045. Love 'em or hate 'em, electric vehicles will take over. FYI: According to 2018 figures that I found, NASCAR uses 5.86 liter V8 engines which rev to around 10,000rpm and produce around 800-850HP. F1 uses 1.6 liter hybrid V6 engines which rev to around 15,000 rpm and produce over 900HP. F1 introduced hybrid engines in 2014. I also tried to find out which was more efficient, but with America using different sized gallons to the UK, I couldn't be bothered with the math(s).
  9. That's brilliant news - I'll see you at Roger's party!
  10. Why would I do that, Roger? What I will do is relate a story from a comedy gig I was at last night. Australian comedian Adam Hills was pointing out odd things that the Irish say (i.e. things that sound odd to people from elsewhere). One of these was the use of the word "deadly" to mean good, as in "I went out for a meal last night - it was deadly". Adam said that this causes problems when the Irish visit Australia and get told, "See that spider over there? It's deadly."

  13. Both IMDb and Wikipedia give the original US air date of 'Carnival of Thrills' as September 16, 1980 (with the former also listing a premiere date of February 21/28, 1981 in the UK and November 23/24, 1982 in Germany). They also agree that the next episode, 'Enos Strate to the Top', wasn't shown until November 5, 1980. Both sources are publicly editable, so I won't call them definitive, but I did find the advert below in an article about the 1980 Fall Preview edition of TV Guide.

  15. That's not good news, that's GREAT news.
  16. Thanks for posting about this, Roger. There's pictures of the cars on display before the show on the NEOD Facebook page. I'm not sure why Byron is wearing one of their "Wannabe Duke Boy" T-shirts when he actually was one!
  17. The changing car in 'Carnival of Thrills' was covered back on page 3 on this thread.
  18. I've just watched the annual Eurovision Song Contest. Well done to the Netherlands - their first win since 1975. Were you watching, Roth? On the downside, the United Kingdom came last and Ireland didn't even make the final.
  19. Sorry, but something like this popped into my head when I read your post
  20. I wondered why the Northeast Ohio Dukes had changed their logo to modified version of the Trans-Am "screaming chicken" - see here. Maybe some of y'all knew, but they were planning to do a tribute to Burt Reynolds by performing a Smokey and the Bandit jump in Detroit. Then the authorities saw the old Georgia flag on the movie car (which wasn't going to be used on the stunt car) and cancelled the jump. You can see Ray explaining the situation here.

;previous: I don't remember Sanford & Son being shown in the UK. I think I only became aware of it about 10 years ago. I've just watched a couple of episodes, and while the end credits do mention Steptoe & Son, it's a very different show. Here's one of the highest rated episodes (according to IMDb) of Steptoe & Son (the cinema frame must be for copyright reasons):

Thanks for the link, Garrett. That's not your usual classic car collection. I like that he has a pristine 1949 pickup and a Sanford & Son replica. In the British original of the show (Steptoe & Son), the main characters had a horse and cart (the horse was called Hercules).
