The main race turned out to be less exciting than the sprint race. Oscar Piastri held his lead at the start and team mate Lando Norris got past George Russell. Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc passed Max Verstappen, but Charles lost the end of his front wing hitting Lewis at the first corner. Weirdly, the damage seemed to make his car faster. Most of the cars only made one pit stop, although Lewis tried a second when he was being caught by Max. He only lost one place trying it, and he'd have lost that anyway. Max also passed Charles before the end. At the checkered flag, Oscar and Lando took a 1-2 for McLaren with George in third. Max was fourth ahead of the Ferraris, although team mate Liam Lawson had another disappointing race and finished 15th. Completing the top ten were Esteban Ocon (Haas), Andrea Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes), Alex Albon (Williams) and Oliver Bearman (Haas) who made some good overtakes to move up from 17th to 10th to claim the final point. Fernando Alonso was the only retiree from the race. His brake issues meant he's yet to finish a main race this year. The 8-minute highlights are here. Lando now leads the Drivers' Championship on 44 points, but there's only two points between the next three with Max (36), George (35) and Oscar (34). Both McLarens have scored well so far, so they have a good lead over Mercedes in the Constructors' Championship, but there's only a point between Red Bull and Ferrari in third and fourth. The next race is the Japanese Grand Prix in two weeks.
  2. Here's another classic 'Only Fools and Horses' moment. Del and his dopey friend Trigger visit a fancy wine bar looking for more sophisticated women. BTW. We learn in the very first episode that Trigger is called that not because he carries a gun, but because he looks like a horse!
  3. Here's a very famous funny scene from British favorite 'Only Fools and Horses'. Del has convinced the owner of a stately home that they can take the chandelier down for cleaning. The actors were told that they'd be sacked if they laughed as it would ruin the scene and they couldn't film it again due to the prop chandelier costing £6,000. The story was based on a similar scenario which happened to the writer's father. The father was initially upset that his son had used the story for a TV show as they'd got into trouble for it, but changed his mind after seeing the finished version.

Qualifying for tomorrow's race favored McLaren. Oscar Piastri took his first F1 main race pole (he's previously had a couple of sprint poles), with team mate Lando Norris again making a mistake on his fastest lap to qualify in third. They were split by George Russell in second. Max Verstappen got pushed back to fourth, followed by the Ferraris of Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc. Rookies Isack Hadjar and Andrea Kimi Antonelli took seventh and eighth. Let's hope that Isack makes it round to the start this week. The highlights are here.

In the F1 sprint race, Lewis Hamilton converted his pole position to his first win for Ferrari. Oscar Piastri passed Max Verstappen for second, and George Russell passed Charles Leclerc for fourth. That's four different teams in the top four places. Sometimes the sprint races can be a little processional, with drivers not wanting to take too many risks with their cars a few hours before qualifying for the main race, but there was a good bit of overtaking in the midfield today. The highlights are here.

I was wondering the same thing.

    TV Westerns

I'm not sure if we had all of those in the UK. Most of the names are familiar, but I've probably only heard of them later in life. The nearest to the genre that I remember watching were 'Champion the Wonder Horse' (aka 'The Adventures of Champion') and 'The Lone Ranger'.

    NASCAR news

After a learning weekend at his first Grand Prix for Ferrari in Australia, Lewis Hamilton has put his car on pole for tomorrow's sprint race, three places ahead of his team mate Charles Leclerc. Max Verstappen brought his Red Bull home very close behind, but his team mate Liam Lawson starts at the back. In third place on the grid is McLaren's Oscar Piastri. His team mate Lando Norris went wide on a fast lap which could've challenged for pole, and he starts in sixth. If you include the Mercedeses of George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli in fifth and seventh, the top four teams look pretty closely matched this year, which should make for some good racing.

RIP to former F1 boss Eddie Jordan who died this morning at the age of 76. After selling his team, he later appeared as a TV pundit and also became an occasional presenter on Top Gear. Full story here and an obituary here.
  10. In 'Road Pirates', the bad guys were hijacking TRUCKS.
  11. I was born in the south-west, but grew up just outside London, about 100 miles from Birmingham. I don't remember visiting Birmingham for anything other than shows at the National Exhibition Centre (NEC).
  12. So far I've only had a few brief visits to Co. Cork, but I still haven't made it up to Co. Donegal (it's at least a 4-hour, 200 mile drive which as yet I haven't felt tempted take).
  13. I've lived in Ireland for over 20 years, but I'm originally from England.
  14. I hope everyone in the US is safe and well. In Ireland, March 17 can only mean St Patrick's Day. This year I had to help out a bit with the organizing, but still got to see the parade and other attractions. Despite not being Irish, I still dressed head to foot in green! Roger, you'd probably have enjoyed seeing the Museum of the Moon, an art installation which features a 7m diameter, 1:500,000 model of the moon. A temporary Ferris wheel gave us great views despite cloudy conditions. Finally, we got some great live Irish music from Kíla. The uilleann pipes and bodhrán mixed with flutes, drums, guitar and bass were played with such energy - it was amazing.

Now onto the race. Unusually for Australia, it was a wet race. Two of the rookies went out early with Isack Hadjar hitting the wall on the formation lap and Jack Doohan doing the same at turn 5 on the opening lap. After a dry line appeared on the circuit, the drivers briefly switched to dry tires, but fresh rain forced them back onto the intermediate tires. Ferrari gambled on staying out with Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc leading for a lap, but ultimately it was the wrong decision as they had to swap tires anyway. Nearly all of the drivers had some kind of off track incident or spin, and only 14 of the 20 starters saw the checkered flag. Once Lando Norris had regained the lead he went on to win, but Max Verstappen was less than a second behind at the end. They were followed home by the Mercedeses of George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli, and the Williams of Alex Albon. Oscar Piastri managed to recover from his spin to overtake Lewis Hamilton on the last lap and finish ninth. That leaves McLaren and Mercedes tied at the top of the Constructors' Championship with Red Bull in third. With all the incidents, the highlights are 13 minutes long this week - you can watch them here. Only a week to wait for the next race in China.

This was the starting line-up for this morning's Australian Grand Prix. There are a few new names, so I thought I'd post the whole field: 1 Lando Norris McLaren Mercedes 2 Oscar Piastri McLaren Mercedes 3 Max Verstappen Red Bull Racing Honda RBPT 4 George Russell Mercedes 5 Yuki Tsunoda Racing Bulls Honda RBPT 6 Alexander Albon Williams Mercedes 7 Charles Leclerc Ferrari 8 Lewis Hamilton Ferrari 9 Pierre Gasly Alpine Renault 10 Carlos Sainz Williams Mercedes 11 Isack Hadjar Racing Bulls Honda RBPT 12 Fernando Alonso Aston Martin Aramco Mercedes 13 Lance Stroll Aston Martin Aramco Mercedes 14 Jack Doohan Alpine Renault 15 Gabriel Bortoleto Kick Sauber Ferrari 16 Andrea Kimi Antonelli Mercedes 17 Nico Hulkenberg Kick Sauber Ferrari 18 Liam Lawson Red Bull Racing Honda RBPT 19 Esteban Ocon Haas Ferrari NC Oliver Bearman Haas Ferrari 2024 constructors' champions McLaren took a 1-2 on the grid with Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. Red Bull's Max Verstappen and Mecedes' George Russell were just behind. Neither Max's or George's new team mates made the top ten. Yuki Tsunoda and Alex Albon both had a great qualifying to start ahead of the two Ferraris. If two of the teams seem to have very similar names, it's because they do. Red Bull have run two teams for years, and while the first team is always Red Bull Racing, the second team's name changes almost annually. This year it's Racing Bulls. While the names are similar, the cars are primarily dark blue and white respectively. You can watch the highlights here.
  18. The only episodes I ever saw were the ones where they filmed on the Warner back lot and I posted pictures in the Hazzard Square thread. That was over 12 years ago and I don't remember much about them.
  19. I couldn't find Ewen McGuin, but Ewen/Ewan is a Scottish name pronounced yoo-uhn. You may know Scottish actor Ewan McGregor. The Welsh equivalent is Owen. This seems to be the most popular in the US (e.g. actor Owen Wilson, Lynyrd Skynyrd drummer Owen Hale etc.). In Ireland it's Eoin or Eoghan (both pronounced like Owen). There all connected to the names Ian and John, and are meant to originally derive from Eugene.
  20. But how many of the cast had extra fingers in your AI search? 😀 On a slightly more serious note, and one I hadn't considered before, if AI is learning from sites like HazzardNet, that's a great reason to make sure what we post is correct. Let's face it, AI won't learn much accurate information from Facebook!
  21. It's pronounced Ay-oh-win. Each storm season, Met Éireann (Ireland) collaborates with the UK Met Office and the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) to come up with a list of storm names. Éowyn was one of the submissions from the UK Met Office. Although it looks like it might be Gaelic, it was probably taken from JRR Tolkien’s 'The Lord of the Rings' where Éowyn is a noblewoman of the kingdom of Rohan.
  22. We had Storm Éowyn back in January with winds of over 80mph in parts of Ireland (Scotland recorded a gust of 135mph) which left nearly 15% of the country without power. Some people in rural communities were without power for over two weeks.
