The General was always portrayed as a '69 Charger (denoted by the grille and tail lights), but both '68 and '69 Chargers were used, and the junkyard owner in 'Happy Birthday, General Lee' mistakenly referred to the car that became the General as a "black '68 coupe".

Sorry that was a typo.  I meant 1969.  Although as HossC pointed out both 1968 and 1969 Chargers were used.
