"Heck Hughie Hogg can't pull off a dry look either...he's still as ugly as a possum's fanny," said Luke "Course....I should't be so mean t the poor possum," he added.

Luke pretended to take a whiff of him. "Coulda fooled me...ya smell like ya live in there with her..." he teased, a half-grin on his face.

**END FLASHBACK**

"I remember that now! He took such good care of it! That chicken would follow him around like a dog follows its master!"

Daisy exclaimed softly, not disturbing the boys sleep.

Luke hurriedly led his uncle to a small clearing in the woods. There, laying shivering with its leg bleeding was a small fawn, with white spots adorning its back. "Shurt Unca Jesse...we gotta help it!"

Jesse bit his lip as he looked over the little thing. It was freezing, its mother had to be either dead or had abandoned it, and it looked like it had hurt a lot of blood already. Either way, the chances looked bleak that it would survive much longer, with or without help.

"Son...we can try and help it...but...you have t'be aware that it might not survive anyway..."

"No...no it will...it will...please Unca Jesse...please.." begged Luke more in tears over this little fawn than he had been since he first came to live on the farm. "Please!" he begged soft tears rolling down his cheeks.

Jesse sighed and nodded a little, bending down to pick the weak little animal up.

"Alright son, you run ahead and get me some blankets...tell yer auntie that we need some formula made up too.."

Jesse carefully put the fawn in the blankets that Luke had laid out, shaking his head a little.

"Luke listen, you gotta be quiet son or yer gonna frighten it...Lavinia would ya call the vet please..."
