(hmmm, I'm not sure if they're called that across the pond)

The pancakes we traditionally have on Shrove Tuesday are more like crêpes, and therefore flatter as the proverb suggests. I knew the American style ones as Scotch pancakes or drop scones when I was younger, but you can now buy them ready-made in supermarkets simply labeled "Pancakes". There's no IHOP or similar chain here, and the only time I regularly see pancakes on a menu is the McDonald's breakfast menu (they're the American style with maple syrup and optional burger-like sausages).

Liquid

I never saw pancakes at Mcdonalds, but we do have a lot of Pancakes here. We have restaurants where they almost only serve Pancakes. We don't only use sugar but also Paprika, Onions, Powdered Sugar, regular sugar, fatback or something else like chocolate if you want.

Also there is something I think you can only buy in the Netherlands, they are called Poffertjes
