vrush
Does anyone know? Why did the creators of this show give them that last name? Any particular reason? Edited July 21 by vrush RogerDuke
HossC
From 'The Dukes of Hazzard: The Unofficial Companion': [Gy] Waldron continued the play on words when he chose the name 'Duke' for his family, and dubbed the series 'The Dukes of Hazzard'. He wanted a reference to royalty, but the King family was already taken. ... "When I was a young man I worked in a hardware store with an elderly gentleman who was filled with the wit and wisdom of the country world. His name was 'Duke'." vrush
Thank you for the reply! Any ideas about why he wanted a reference to royalty? RogerDuke
HossC
It doesn't say much more in the book, although it does mention that Gy Waldron likes short names and was quite happy to have the rhyming name Luke Duke. RogerDuke

RogerDuke
Welcome to the HazzardNet vrush. That was a great question. I sure didn't know the answer to it. And thank you Hoss. Kinda cool to know there are Dukes around who inspired the name. Makes me wonder if they know. I wonder if the elderly gentleman has Duke descendants running around and are aware they are Hazzard royalty....in a way. We hope to hear more from you vrush. vrush
Thank you, Roger Duke! I was curious if Jerry Rushing had any input on the name, but it looks like it came just from Gy Waldron. Edited July 24 by vrush

I play Hobie Hartkins on here....you know...a car salesman and the town drunk! LOL! It's great to have you!.......and no, I take a nip every once in a while but I'm no town drunk! ( I'm not a car salesman either!) If I ever make a comment or a joke you don't understand, just ask. It will have something to do with The show and everybody here will get it but the new people might not! RogerDuke

He also wanted at least 2 of the names to be biblical. Luke & Jesse.
