  1. Hey you, don't watch that, watch this! This is the heavy heavy monster sound, the nuttiest sound around ...
  2. To curb the sales of illegal knives, although it seems a bit over-the-top. It was the result of popular BBC consumer show 'Watchdog' buying knives that are illegal in the UK through the site. The BBC News article is here.
  3. Daney, I think CDoherty's away for a couple of days, so let me put your mind at rest. Unlike some parts of mainland Europe, there are no compulsory or voluntary ID cards for the general population of either the UK or Ireland. What Ireland does have is a voluntary system called the "National Age Card Scheme" which is a proof of age card and not an identity card. Legal drinking age is 18, so most people with these cards are in their late teens or early 20s. They cost €10 - more info here. For the rest of the population there are alternative forms of identification. In Ireland you are legally required to carry your driver's license if you're driving (not the case in the UK). There is also a higher proportion of the country that holds a passport: about 70% in Ireland (similar in the UK), compared to 35% in the US. CD's friend may also have a student card, so if the worst happens, there should still be ways to identify him.
  4. I've said this before, but people don't routinely own these sort of knives over here. After reading the last post I went to check on something that I vaguely remembered, and I was right: in the UK and Ireland eBay banned the sale of all knives and swords except cutlery back in 2009. Just thought I'd include this FYI: Change to policy regarding sale of knives on eBay.co.uk and eBay.ie I don't think this affects other internet sites, and you could buy one from a store if you are over 18. It is, however, illegal to sell flick knives, butterfly knives and disguised knives to any age.
  5. The next Patrol Cars post will just be about the first two thirds of season 6. I haven't yet gone through the last episodes to see if any more patrol cars appear. I would love to have more time to finish that thread off, but other things keep taking my time. I haven't forgotten to look at the Carver race car when I get to 'Undercover Dukes'.

  6. Not much. I should have another post for the Patrol Cars in Pictures thread in the next couple of days, but there's not a lot to interest you. I've been adding to Hazzard Square and doing other stuff recently.

You'd better take some pictures and upload them to Instagram while you're there. Wrigley Field is currently in fourth place in the table of most pictures of a ballpark posted online: How Instagram Is Taking Over Major League Baseball Enjoy the game .
  9. Not as smoothly as they'd have liked. I found a video on YouTube showing an unintentional crash before the jump (the jump is also included): NB. Dukesfest 2012 was the name given by the uploader of the video.
  10. Song For Whoever - The Beautiful South Oh Shirley, Oh Deborah, Oh Julie, Oh Jane, I wrote so many songs about you, I forget your name...
  11. If the box looks like the one below then it dates from around 1981. A quick look an Ebay shows four of them for sale ranging from a starting bid of $0.99 to a buy-it-now price of $56.99. You may get more if it's still unopened. Enjoy it, but I don't think you'll be able to retire early .
  12. I'll look that up tomorrow and pretend I was saving it for another post . I don't seem to give myself time to watch whole episodes these days, so I tend to grab pictures out of sequence and don't necessarily watch every episode. This means that I accumulate images until I think I have enough to make a whole post about a certain area worthwhile or until the area is identified. Some of the pictures I posted last week had been hanging around for ages because I didn't know where they were, then several others fell into place when I rewatched other episodes. The last picture I posted (Placerita Chaparral) was only grabbed during the week when I was looking at 'The Ghost of General Lee' for another thread. I figured I'd stick it on the end because it was pretty close to the other locations, and I don't currently have any more that are nearby. Anyway, thanks for the extra info. I think the next post will be heading back toward Lake Sherwood when I figure out what I want to show.
  13. While we're at the Golden Oaks Ranch I'll cover another recognizable structure that's only a couple of hundred yards north of the barn. Originally spotted by MeadowMufn in another thread, it's the covered bridge (#23 on Disney's location plan). This is Bo jumping into the lake while Luke drives Cooter's tow truck across the bridge in 'Follow That Still' Here's another angle as Miss Leona runs away from Bubba in 'Find Loretta Lynn'. The bridge appears in several other episodes including when it was used as the exchange point in 'The Runaway'. It's not the easiest structure to spot from the air, unless you know where to look, so I've included this aerial shot. As you can see, using the bridge isn't much quicker than driving around the end of the lake. The large building that's visible at the right end of the bridge on Google Maps seems to have been built since Dukes was filmed. For a non-Dukes aside, if you stay on Google's 45 degree view and go south-east you can see the new "Urban Business District" set at various stages of construction (change the orientation to see other views). Google must have updated their aerial views, because when I first looked at this area there was an old Wild West set at this location. This last picture isn't on Golden Oaks Ranch, but it is only a short distance to the east on Placerita Canyon Road. The scene appears very briefly in 'The Ghost of General Lee'. The wall in the middle, on the corner of Running Horse Road, seems to have been rebuilt since Dukes was filmed, and is now surrounded by several bushes. The text on the wall isn't readable in Dukes, but it now says "Placerita Chaparral". If you check out the Street View you'll see that this particular view hasn't changed much over the years.
  14. The buildings we've been looking at are part of Disney's Golden Oaks Ranch on Placerita Canyon Road. Here's how the buildings look today. Apart from a different side roof on the barn, they still look pretty similar. According to Disney's location plan (PDF) this is the "Central Region" of the ranch, and now sits between two recently-built street sets. The barn itself is simply labelled "Main Barn", but the area off to the right of this picture is appropriately named "Moonshine Meadow/Woods". To see it on Google Maps, click here. One of the reasons that I included the picture of Squirt in the previous post is that it ties in nicely with these pictures from 'The Ghost of General Lee'. Although you can't see the white buildings in this picture (they're just off to the left), the roof that overhangs the barn doors can clearly be seen. The Feed & Grain sign is right there in the middle. In another scene from 'The Ghost of General Lee' we see the bad guys in front of the same barn (the small bush must have been a prop because it moves along the barn wall between scenes!). This picture, however, also shows that this was the season 2 location of the Boar's Nest: the entrance is visible on the right. Once you know what you're looking for, you can see the barn and the white buildings in the background of several other Boar's Nest scenes in season 2.
  15. I'm going to use this post to show some scene-setting pictures from 'Find Loretta Lynn' before explaining their location in the next. The first is the entrance to the Hazzard County Stockyards with the large barn at the back. The barn was used to hide Loretta's RV. Here's the same area as seen from the front of the barn as Miss Leona escapes. The distinctive stepped roofline of the white buildings is visible in both of these pictures. When Bo and Luke arrive at the stockyards they park to the left of sign in the first picture. If you watch this scene carefully you'll see that the little black blob above Bo's head is actually a small animal scampering to safety! Here's Squirt walking along the side of the barn, ready to ambush the Dukes. I've included it because it gives a good close-up of the "Feed & Grain" sign.
  16. Welcome to HNet General. You're right, it is a fun site .
  17. I'll use the "the" from Garrett's track to get back on the "song" songs theme: The gnu: the g-nicest work of g-nature in the zoo. Although I'd normally recommend the original of any Flanders and Swann song, is pretty good .
  18. Hi Richard, welcome to HNet. Like Brian, I am also looking forward to seeing your photos.

    Tower of Song

This week's comparison was a song I know very well, and I have to say I'm biased because the original version is one of my all-time favorites. Once again, the cover version was good, but for me it's the original every time. See what y'all think of this one: Glen Campbell - Wichita Lineman I have another version that wasn't included in the comparison, but, for me, even 'The Man in Black' can't beat Glen's version: Don't get me wrong: I think both the covers are good, but not great. Opinions welcome.
  21. Here's another picture inspired by a typo, although this time it wasn't one of mine. I present the Plymouth Furry, or is that the Furry Plymouth :
  22. There's some great dancing in this if you stick around until the end . Not another one .

I'd almost forgotten about this song until it came up on my MP3 player the other day. It seems that this track, from their third album, did slightly better on this side of the Atlantic. It works well with the hot weather we're enjoying at the moment.
  24. To be blunt, I wouldn't waste your time worrying about it. For some reason there seems to be a new prediction for the end of the world about every six month at the moment. The prediction that's receiving attention now is December 21st 2012, which marks the end of the current 5125 year cycle in the Mayan calendar. Other dates were given earlier this year when some argued that the Mayan calendar didn't include leap years, or that the calculations didn't take into account the changes made when the Gregorian calendar succeeded the Julian calendar in 1582. All this despite the fact that Mayan experts claim there is no mention of the world ending on that date from any source. Last year Harold Camping gave us two dates for 'the rapture'. When the first date of May 21st 2011 passed without incident, he claimed that a non-visible "spiritual judgment" had taken place, and that the physical rapture would occur on October 21, 2011. For those of you who don't watch the news, it didn't happen. If you do want to take your predictions for the end of the world from the Bible: in 1704, British scientist Sir Isaac Newton proposed that, based upon his calculations using figures from the Book of Daniel, the Apocalypse could happen no earlier than 2060. There have also been various interpretations for the date of the end of the world based on the writings of Nostradamus, although most people seem to claim things were predicted by Nostradamus using hindsight; I'd like to see this method used for the Apocalypse. If you do want to read Nostradamus, maybe you should try his first book. Written in 1555, before his predictions, it concerned the secrets of making jams and jellies. Apparently the recipe for cherry jam is still considered good .
  25. Similar title, very different song: A Campfire Song - 10,000 Maniacs Additional vocals on this track are provided by R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe.
