RogerDuke Posted November 4, 2008 Report Posted November 4, 2008 You're right B.L. It was never shown. Min, I remember them mentioning a root cellar too but I don't know which episode. To answer your question, I think a root cellar can be the same thing as a basement but I would guess that it would be lacking a concrete floor or other such luxuries. The temperature in a root cellar is more constant (and cool) so people used to store their roots there that they used for food and medicinal purposes. There probably were folks who had root cellars seperate from their house. The used to have "spring houses" too. That was a place near cool water that they built a small shed around (the better insulated ones were stone and not wood). The spring water would keep their food cool so it was like a primitive refrigerator. Quote
