Going back to the original acronym in this thread, I was just on YouTube watching a stand-up routine from several years ago. The comedian said that she's amazed that she can now text her bank and they'll text back with her balance, although she thought the "LOL" was a bit harsh .

I've just found the video below on YouTube. While some of the content may be new to visitors, is it really a "shock" to Americans that the Irish are friendly and drive on the left? The video includes a few shots of the place where I live.

Assuming that you mean Southern US accents (as opposed to Southern Ireland), I think they're liked here, so long as they're not being used to aggressively quote lines from 'Deliverance' .

Although Ireland's much smaller than the US in terms of size and population, it still has very definable regions. You may have noticed that the accents video referred to Cork as "The People's Republic of Cork", which is just a nickname implying that it's like another country. I don't know who's currently the butt of the jokes in the US (I'm afraid it was the Irish when I was in the UK), but over here they're told about the Kerryman. I could go on, but you get the idea.

I'll save you the trouble, Hobie. Here it is:

Funnily enough, there was a commercial showing recently in the UK that used Kenny Loggins' 'Danger Zone'. I'd forgotten it was on the 'Top Gun' soundtrack.

While we're talking '80s movie soundtracks, I recently re-watched 'Young Einstein', I think for the first time since I saw it at the cinema (almost 30 years ago!). I'd completely forgotten about the song 'Great Southern Land' by Icehouse. The video has more Australian scenery than a Super Bowl commercial :

Of course, 'Great Southern Land' probably has a different meaning to Dukes fans .

I just watched that part of the episode again to see what happens.

Bubba's driving the RV, and Squirt's in the back with Loretta and Leona (although Leona disappears after briefly appearing reflected in a mirror). Cindy peels out of the Boar's Nest parking lot and is seen quite close behind the RV in its next couple of appearances. After Bo and Luke crash into the haystack, the blue car is further behind the RV but still following. The car isn't shown in any of the shots of Loretta dropping the pictures - the inside shots only show the curtains at the window, and the exterior shots only show the rear of the RV. The only explanation for Cindy not spotting the pictures is that she either dropped further back or took a different route to the barn, but both seem unlikely given that the car is shown pulling into the barn just behind the RV.

On a related issue, I've just noticed that the window at the back of the RV where Loretta drops the pictures has light-colored curtains which split in the middle when viewed from the inside, but a dark-colored blind from the outside. Although it's possible to have both, the curtains let in too much lights for there to be a blind too.

Thanks, Roger, I've never heard that term before. I Googled a picture, and they look similar to our spring onions/scallions. Leeks are also related, but our leeks don't have bulbs on the end.

Tasmania is one of the states of Australia, and is only about 150 miles from the mainland. It's also home to the Tasmanian devil - yes, they're real, although they don't look much like the cartoon character!

I haven't covered the West Potrero Road area (just north-west of Lake Sherwood) in the Hazzard Square thread yet because, as I mentioned recently, I was planning to link to Wekke's pictures. Since these are no longer available I hope to be covering the area soon. This road, with its distinctive white fencing, was used quite a bit. From what I can see it hasn't changed much. I think the only picture I've posted so far is from the Reunion movie:

Don't go looking for the location of the Duke Farm and Boars Nest from this era - the location near Lake Sherwood has changed beyond recognition. I also plan to cover this in future posts.

Danica is 35 (36 in March). I don't think you're losing your mind, Hobie, she's an attractive woman.

A quick look through the female racing drivers who've competed at the top level of their sport (NASCAR, Indycar, F1, WRC etc.) over the years seems to suggest that good looks certainly aren't a hindrance. They're definitely a better looking bunch than some of their male counterparts .

    Ireland

(Titanic's last port of call was Queenstown, County Cork. The town was once called Cove, but was renamed Queenstown when Queen Victoria visited. After Ireland became independent, the name was changed to Cobh, a name which means nothing in Irish, but it's still pronounced "Cove" ("bh" is pronounced "v" in Irish, as in names like "Siobhan"))

Nice thread idea, here's a few more:
    1. You wash your car by driving it into the local pond.
    2. You go out for a drink with friends and order a buttermilk.
    3. You fill your car up with gas and get surprised when it costs more than 65.9 cents a gallon.
    4. When you visit the General Store, you think they should be selling '69 Chargers.
    5. You hit your thumb with a hammer and, despite having an array of ruder words in your vocabulary, say 'dang it'.
    6. You see a dip in the road and think 'what if I hit that going a bit faster?'.

The West Country accent may work well in Lord of the Rings, but here's a behind-the-scenes clip from the original Star Wars. It would have been a very different movie if they'd used Dave Prowse's own voice.

Yes, Southern Ireland swapped to KPH just over 10 years ago. There was a time when I first moved here that speed limit signs were still in MPH, but road signs had distances in kilometers, which was strange.

Even though we're in KPH and kilometers, I still tend to automatically convert to miles because that's what I grew up with. Also, I have no idea what a good fuel consumption figure is in liters per 100km - MPG makes a lot more sense to me (once I remember that a US gallon is about 3.8 liters while a UK gallon is just over 4.5 liters).

    Roundabout

There's a roundabout (or traffic circle as I believe they're known in the US) called Charlie Brown's Roundabout in northeast London. It got its name from a nearby pub which was demolished in 1972. The landlord of the pub and his father before him were both called Charlie Brown.

The crossed flags seem to be popular with people who build replica General Lees, maybe because of the affection in which they hold the Georgia episodes. Personally, I like them, but I wouldn't consider them essential.
