So Jeb calls Daisy and explains everything that's happened and then Heather's idea. "Please Daisy I'm at the end of my rope here. I don't want to let her go but I don't know what else to try." Jeb says.
"Don't you know Aunt Daisy? If anyone can get Mommy to talk about what it'll take for her to believe you love her it'd be Aunt Daisy." Heather says rolling her eyes.
"Oh I know. Why don't we call Aunt Daisy and ask her to pick Mama's brain to day about what it would take? You know they always do like talking about guys." Heather says.
"Look I may be just a kid but I overheard you all last night. Momma's scared you're gonna get killed racing like you do so you want to give it up. All just to make Mama realize that life is full of danger but you'll do anything to make her marry you including giving up what you love. It's not fair to you or to her but you're gonna do it anyway. If she really loved you she wouldn't make you give it up. I know because I've seen your races. Uncle Earl loved to watch them. You're really good and you have plenty of years left. Don't give it up please Daddy." Heather says.
"But it is, everything she said is true. He's gonna quit racing there be less of chance he could die and it's all to get me to marry him." Lizzy sighs. "Go away." Heather shouts when Jeb knocks on the door.
Cooter nods and Jeb leaves the kitchen. "You know the worst part?" Lizzy says when she feels Cooter's hand on her shoulder. "She's right. This is all my fault."
"This is all your fault." Heather snaps at Lizzy. "My fault? How do you figure that?" Lizzy asks. "If you weren't still hung up on Petey's death then you wouldn't have made Daddy feel like he had to quit racing. I hate you." Heather says then bolts from the table in a whirlwind of tears and into her bedroom slamming the door. "Heather." Lizzy calls. She shakes her head then lowers it to the table.
"What do you mean?" Heather asks her big blue eyes going wider as a sign that she's gonna start crying. Lizzy cringes and Cooter shoots Jeb a glance. "He just means that he's thinking about settling down and building a family with you and your momma." Cooter says. "But surely he can race and do that too." Heather says. "Right Daddy?"
"And mommy come with us?" Heather asks. "Not today honey I promised your Aunt Daisy I'd go shopping." Lizzy says. Heather's nose wrinkles in disgust and Lizzy smiles. "That's my tomboy princess."
