The Patrol Cars In Pictures

Brian's recent update of the FAQ section has spurred me on to make a visual record of all the patrol cars that appeared in Dukes. You'll find much of this information in other threads on HNet, but I wanted to collect it together with pictures (they say a picture is worth a thousand words!). Although most of the non-Hazzard cars were Dodge Coronets/Monacos or Plymouth Furys, I intend to include them to show their different liveries. I have recreated some of these already in the Rosco's Patrol Car thread in Fan Art.

We'll start with season 1. This had the largest variation, with different cars being used throughout the season, and the continuity was appalling - often a patrol car changes make and model several times mid-chase. Some of these early cars even pop up in later seasons when footage is re-used. You can see why they standardized the cars (and most of the cast's costumes) in later seasons.

The first is from 'One Armed Bandits'. It's a 1970 Dodge Polara. This car appears in the opening credits; first when the show's title appears, and then pulling up in front of the pile of dirt for the Lee 1 jump.

1970Polara0101.jpg

The other patrol car in 'One Armed Bandits' is a 1975 Dodge Monaco (very similar to the 1974 Dodge Monaco that appears in The Blues Brothers). In case you thought that I was mistaken about the patrol car used in the Lee 1 jump, the car that pulls up is the Polara (see above), but the patrol car that gets jumped was this Monaco - just one example of the bad continuity mentioned at the start of this post.

1975Monaco0101.jpg

'Daisy's Song' introduces us to the Atlanta Police. They have several patrol cars, all 1975/76 Plymouth Furys.

1975AtlantaFury0102.jpg

By 'Mary Kaye's Baby' another Hazzard Patrol car appears - a 1975 Plymouth Gran Fury missing the 'T' from the hood letters - unusual because later vehicles had their branding removed or covered with tape.

'High Octane' sees the only appearance of a 1973 Plymouth Fury I. This is Enos's patrol car that Bo and Luke 'borrow'.

1973Fury0105.jpg

When the filming moves to California, the patrol cars change. Here is Enos driving a 1974 Plymouth Satellite in 'Swamp Molly'.

1974Satellite0106.jpg

Also in 'Swamp Molly', the more familiar 1975/76 Plymouth Furys appear in Hazzard livery for the first time (the front car is parked, which explains the lack of driver).

1975Fury0106.jpg

By 'Deputy Dukes' the patrol cars have all become 1974 AMC Matadors. These were used until the end of the season. It's an AMC Matador that's seen chasing the General in the closing credits.

Also in 'Deputy Dukes' we get to see the Springville County patrol cars. These are the only shots I could get, but they appear to be 1973 Dodge Polaras.

1973SpringvillePolara1_0110.jpg

These look like New York City patrol cars of that era, and I think there may even be residue from the old decals on the door.

1973SpringvillePolara2_0110.jpg

This one isn't strictly a patrol car, but it's driven by the Tri-Counties Bonding Company guards in 'Money to Burn'. It's a 1971 AMC Matador.

1971Matador0111.jpg

The last patrol car from season 1 belongs to Choctaw County. It's a 1975/76 Dodge Coronet. Considering that they created three of these cars, it was hard to get a clear picture. The roof is white over a light brown body. The decals are identical to the Hazzard cars except that it says 'Choctaw County Sheriff' under the door badge (briefly visible when the car rolls over). The car also has the squarer style lightbar.

Season 2 starts with 'Days of Shine and Roses' and a vintage moonshining movie. It's not easy to see what Sheriff 'Spike' Loomis drives, but I'm going to plump for a 1947/48 Ford Super Deluxe (the '46 didn't have the parking lights under the headlights).

1947Ford0201.jpg

The modern-day Hatchapee patrol cars are more standard 1977/78 Dodge Monacos. Sheriff Loomis's car is the one with the moonshine jugs stencilled onto the front fender!.

1977HatchapeeMonaco0201.jpg

Hazzard County gets its own 1977/78 Dodge Monacos in season 2. Although they first appeared in 'Days of Shine and Roses' I couldn't get a great picture, so this one is from 'Gold Fever'.

1977Monaco0202.jpg

We get a look at a Sweetwater County patrol car in 'The Ghost of General Lee', and it's another 1975/76 Dodge Coronet. This is pretty much what the Choctaw car (above) looks like with a few minor changes; the lightbar has blue lights on both sides, there are spotlights on the A-pillars, and under the Hazzard-like door badge it just says 'Sheriff'.

Sorry for the delay in adding to this list, but I've been concentrating on other threads. The rest of season 2 didn't yield anything worth mentioning (unless I missed something).

You wait ages for a different patrol car, and then two come along in the same episode - in this case 'Baa, Baa White Sheep'. The first is the red and white Finchburg patrol car.

1977FinchburgMonaco0308.jpg

The other appears at the end of the episode. It's a more standard black and white State Police car. Both are 1977/78 Dodge Monacos.

1977StatePoliceMonaco0308.jpg

No light bar on this one. It's the 1972 AMC Matador driven by the US Marshall in 'Along Came a Duke'.

1972MarshallMatador0317.jpg

Rosco's 'camo' patrol car in 'The Great Hazzard Hijack' is another 1977/78 Monaco. Only in Hazzard would they camouflage a car and then add a lightbar and shiny gold decals.

1977CamoMonaco0321.jpg

I haven't forgotten the appearance of Sheriff Little's patrol car in 'My Son, Bo Hogg'. Because it appears in many episodes I'm waiting for a clearer picture.

I must apologize. I never planned for the posts to this thread to be so sporadic, but here's the latest installment. The Hazzard police are still driving '77/'78 Dodge Monacos, although the occassional Matador or rounded-headlight Fury sometimes gets edited into chases.

The end of 'The Hack of Hazzard' takes place in the old mining settlement of Shoveltown (you can see more pictures of Shoveltown in the Hazzard Square thread). Just as Boss gets his hands on the gold certificates, the Colonial City police arrive in their 1972 AMC Matador.

1972ColonialMatador0322.jpg

The previous post promised a picture of Sheriff Little's patrol car when I could get a clearer shot. I admit that this is still a bit blurry, but it shows off the key features that differentiate Sheriff Little's car from the Hazzard cars ie. the spotlights on the A-pillars and the fang-like extensions at the front. You can't see from this angle, but Sheriff Little drives a '75/'76 Plymouth Fury. The picture is from 'Coltrane Vs. Duke'.

1975ChickasawFury0404.jpg

Another vehicle here that's not strictly a patrol car, but it's still one from a government body. This pale blue 1973 AMC Ambassador belongs to the 'State Revenue Service' and appears briefly in 'Sadie Hogg Day'. I'm not sure what was up with door sign - most of it looks very neat, but a couple of letters have been badly touched up in a lighter color (e.g. the 'R' of Revenue). I wouldn't have noticed if the scene hadn't started with a close-up of the sign.

1973RevenueAmbassador0407.jpg

I'll conclude this post with the most expensive patrol car of the series. '10 Million Dollar Sheriff' saw Rosco purchase a 1975 (or later) Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow I. The car looks pretty stock with the exception of the standard Hazzard County decals and lightbar. You'll notice that the lightbar is not the same design as the AeroDynic ones used on the regular patrol cars. Despite being the most expensive patrol car when Dukes was made, you could have a replica pretty cheaply today. A quick look at ebay shows that these cars can be picked up in reasonable condition for less than half the price of reasonable General Lee replica. I know most of us (who don't already own one) would like a General Lee, but this is a Rolls Royce - arrive at the next Hazzard Homecoming in style!.

Bahahaha! Showing up to Hazzard Homecoming/DukesFest in that Rolls Royce, would be totally appropriate for some of us here at HazzardNet.

Dang it! Y'all spilled the beans on my secret project. LOL. The only difference between Rosco's RR patrol car and the official HazzardNet car would be that we'd slap a big HazzardNet sticker on the back window. We'd definitely have a tv in the back for watching cartoons!

I guess now we'll just have to show up in the Mean Green Machine...

Jake01 is quite right - I had missed this 1974 Ford Torino in 'Follow That Still' (see footnote of this post). It's meant to be an ATF car, but the badge on the door doesn't look anything like the ATF logos I could find on Google. While I was looking up the ATF logos it reminded me of a sketch by Sacha Baron Cohen aka. Borat, Brüno, Frenchy in 'Talladega Nights'. In the sketch he visits the ATF as another alter ego, Ali G. The questioning goes something like "So what does ATF stand for?", "Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives", "And what else does you sell?". You can see the sketch

- just remember that the ATF guys are expecting a serious interview.

1974ATFTorino0215.jpg

If I can drag myself off that tangent and back to the case in hand, this US Marshal's car appears right at the end of 'Trouble at Cooter's'. This is all we get to see of it, but going by the tail lights it appears to be a 1978 Pontiac Catalina. For some reason the badges on the uniform and on the car door (see insets) both spell Marshal as "Marshall". Does anyone know of a reason for this, or is the guy moonlighting as an amplifier salesman?. Neither of the badges is an authentic US Marshals' badge.

1978MarshalCatalina0410.jpg

Back to regular patrol cars now, and I believe that 'Goodbye General Lee' mark's the first appearance of a 1977/78 Plymouth Fury in the Hazzard Sheriff's livery - I'm sure someone will tell me if I'm mistaken. They swap around a bit because the Dodge Monacos are back for 'Hughie Hogg Strikes Again'.

1977Fury0411.jpg

Lastly for this post is another ATF car. This one appears in 'Hughie Hogg Strikes Again'. For this episode the car is a 1973 Plymouth Fury and the badges (as best I can see) are similar to the real ATF logo. I'm sorry that the image is a little blurry but the only time the car is seen stationary is after it flips over - maybe that's why they used an older car.

1973ATFFury0413.jpg

Originally this thread was just going to be for police vehicles, but I've expanded my remit to include other non-civilian cars. Some of these are easy to miss (as Jake01 discovered) because they only appear very briefly, so if I leave any out as I go through the seasons I hope y'all will be sure to tell me. I suppose under the new criteria I should have included the President's Limo. I could go back to get a picture if y'all feel it belongs here.

Here's another four cars to finish off season 4. The first, this black and white 1977 Dodge Monaco, appears in 'New Deputy in Town'. It has the squarer style lightbar, but otherwise the exterior looks pretty stock. The badge on the door says 'Police Department City of Roseville'. The exterior may be stock, but Bo, Luke and Cooter want to discover what's under the hood.

1977RosevilleMonaco0421.jpg

The end of 'New Deputy in Town' sees a brief appearance of the US Marshal in a 1977 Chevy Nova. Since 'Trouble at Cooter's' it looks like the costume department has learnt to spell, but not the sign-writers (see insets). This is now the third US Marshal car to appear, and they've all had completely different liveries.

1977MarshalNova0421.jpg

Riverton County's entry in the 'Miss Tri-Counties' race is this 1977 Plymouth Fury. It looks like a Hazzard patrol car with a race number on the hood and the lightbar removed. The inset shows a close-up of the Riverton Sheriff badge from the door, which is very similar to the Hazzard one. If y'all watch the race carefully you'll see that the car that leaves the road is actually a Dodge Monaco (split grille visible) and the '34' on the hood is bolder.

1977RivertonFury0424.jpg

The story of 'Dukes in Danger' revolves around a pair of escaped convicts. This is the car that was carrying them just before the crash that allowed their escape. It's a plain gray 1975 Ford LTD station wagon with 'State Penitentiary' written on the door in simple black text. For those of you that remember the episode, Rosco is actually driving backwards in this picture in an attempt to catch Bo and Luke (he ends up in a tree and has to be pulled out by General Lee!).

Season 5 starts with a dearth of patrol cars. Aside from the odd appearance of Sheriff Little, most of the bad guys in the Coy and Vance episodes get taken away by Hazzard's own police at the end of an episode. For that reason I've included the following two pictures. The sharp-eyed amongst you will notice that these are not strictly cars (the lack of enough wheels was what gave it away to me!).

This motorcycle is seen briefly in 'The New Dukes' as it escorts the armored car which gets attacked by the Mean Green Machine. It seems to have a plain white gas tank, and the rider's badges are never seen clear enough to read. After some Googling I think it's a 1978 Kawasaki KZ 1000 Police, but I really don't know much about bikes, so stand to be corrected.

1978KZ1000_0501.jpg

Two more bikes here, this time from 'Coy vs. Vance'. They look very similar to the one above, although the windshields are different, the orange lights are different sizes and the one above doesn't have mirrors. This time some badges are visible. The 6-pointed star on the gas tank (see inset) is similar to the Hazzard badges and says "COUNTY" across the top, although I can't make out the lower text. By contrast, the uniform badges definitely say "CITY POLICE" (see other inset). For some unknown reason the typeface used for the word "POLICE" on the windshields is different on each bike.

1978KZ1000_0516.jpg

Now back to 4-wheeled vehicles, and back to an episode that ends with the bad guy getting taken away by non-Hazzard police. On this occasion it's Joel in 'Welcome Back, Bo 'n' Luke'. The State Police car has the same badge as the one that appeared in 'Baa, Baa White Sheep' (second picture), although that was a black and white 1977/78 Monaco and this is a blue and white 1975/76 Fury with spotlights on the A-pillars. This one also has an all red lightbar instead of the more usual blue and red combination.

1975StatePoliceFury0519.jpg

This green and white 1975/76 Fury shows up in 'Big Brothers, Duke'. The 7-pointed badge on the door says it belongs to Capitol City Police, but it looks to me like one of Sheriff Little's cars with the 'fangs' removed.

The only thing they changed for the blue State Police, was change the color and logo from the Chickasaw County patrol car and changed the lightbar. Osage County was exactly the same thing but with the typical red and blue lightbar. The black State Police car made a few other appearances.

Interesting how they had a straight red light bar. Here in Delaware, the different light bars mean different things:

Red and Blue: Police

Red: Fire Department/ambulance

Red and Yellow: Ambulance

Blue: Fire Police (Not to be confused with Fire Marshal. They are two different jobs here. Fire Marshal investigates fires, enforces fire codes, etc, whereas fire police do traffic control, crowd control, and act as police on a fire scene).

I know some states blue indicates general police just like the red and blue does.

I can back you up on that, we have that lightbar color the same way here in Iowa. But we have red and blue llightbar colors on our patrol cars. Other state police cars had certain colors on the lightbars.

They're a lot less varied in the UK and Ireland:

Blue: Police, fire, ambulance

Green: Doctor

Amber: Tow trucks, garbage trucks, wide vehicles, slow vehicles etc.

amazingly, yellow (amber) means the same thing here as there. Sorry I missed that one.

Maybe Cooter shoulda had one on his tow truck?

They're more orange than yellow, but Cooter had them on all of his tow trucks (although only the yellow one had a lightbar):

The number of non-Hazzard patrol cars seems to have tailed off compared to earlier seasons, and I didn't spot any more new patrol cars or government vehicles in season 5, so it's on to season 6.

I'm going to need some help identifying these. Taken from 'A Baby for the Dukes', they appear to have silmilar brown liveries, although one has a white hood stripe. They also have the older 'bubble gum' style lights instead of a lightbar. From what I've been able to find, they perform well off-road despite only being rated at one horse power!

Horses0602.jpg

We've seen Sheriff Little's patrol car in this thread before, but I'm including this picture from 'The Boar's Nest Bears' because it shows the car has now lost its front 'fangs'. It was probably one less job to do when his cars were being built.

1975ChickasawFury0605.jpg

In 'Twin Trouble' we get to see another Plymouth Fury from Hatchapee County. For some reason the car is older than the ones in 'Days of Shine and Roses', has the AeroDynic lightbar instead of the squarer variety, and is now blue and white instead of black and white. There's no mention of Sheriff 'Spike' Loomis in this episode, so maybe his replacement, Sheriff Floyd, has made the changes.

1975HatchapeeFury0609.jpg

Once again the repair bills on the Hazzard patrol cars cause Boss to employ extreme measures. For this episode ('Days of Shine and Roses') they are replaced with three-wheelers. From what I could find online these appear to be 1983 Honda 250R ATCs, but I know very little about vehicles with less than four wheels, so correct me if I'm wrong.
