Say no to Wal-Mart for Christmas

I was pretty angry last year, as I'm sure many of you were when Wal-Mart decided to get rid of layaway. That was a pretty dumb and mean-spirited decision on their part. I personally know many people who are only able to buy Christmas presents for their families because of layaway. Well they're playing Scrooge again this year, though they may very well have done this in the past without anybody noticing. A month ago, a friend of mine sent me the money to buy her a 1:10 scale remote controlled General Lee at Wal-Mart. Here's where the Scrooge part comes in, a month ago the price was 30 dollars. I thought I may buy one for myself. So today I was at Wal-Mart and decided to see if they still had the cars. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that the price is now 70 dollars! I can only suppose they raised the price because of the upcoming holidays. I for one will not only not buy a General Lee from them, I will not do any of my Christmas shopping at Wal-Mart. Down with corporate greed.

Amen to that vinsmouse!

So much for their logo "Always low prices, always" I see that they cannot hold up to their logo. Last year, we decided that we were so sick of the prices reaching skyhigh towards Christmas that we decided to shop after Christmas and celebrate it a couple of days after. There are two reasons we do this 1) It allows us to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas. While all of the other crazy people are running around the local stores like a bunch of crazy people, we are enjoying the non-material aspects of the Holiday season... family, friends, and the birth of Christ. 2) We reap the harvest of after Christmas price slashing. Up to 70% sometimes. Although it is a little picked over by that time, I am saving a whole bunch of money. Like you say... Down with Coporate greed. GREED, that's all it is. At least when Boss Hogg was greedy the Dukes could come behind and clean up his mess, and it usually didn't affect too many people, as they always (there's that word again!) got their money back, or if it wasn't the citizen's money, it ended up in the hands of a deserving charity.

That is true RogerDuke... Christmas aint what it use to be... now I know im a teen and all but heck! I member when I was little i got a present no matter what it was be it things for school or clothes I was at least lucky enough to get a present unlike some of those less fortunate than us!! and some of these youngins that run around here they really get under my skin throwing these tantrums in a store cause that aint the right gift or that aint what theys a wantin!!! it just ticks me off, i DO NOT buy for myself when I go to town on Christmas I go buy for others as how it should be!! it is BETTER TO GIVE THAN RECIEVE!!!

thats my two cents worth..ya'll take care now.

Thank you Rogerduke. I doubt that these big corporate (not to mention greedy) companies really give two rips whether I buy for Christmas, although I firmly believe that one person can make a difference, I sometimes wonder if there really is a way to fight the system and let it be known that we don't like this and we want to fight it! Loridavenport, I TOTALLY agree with what you said, it is nice to see that at least some people have standards (that also applies to you Rogerduke!) Now that you make me think about it for a moment, I also see it every day, and I love the saying, "It is better to give than to recieve" It just gives you such a great feeling, like you are on top of the world when you can give a gift to someone. Esspecially when it is from the heart. It almost put tears in my eyes to hear that y'all think the same about Christmas, I don't know what it is about that time of year, but starting just before Thanksgiving and into Christmas, I just get such a great feeling. I don't in any way expect gifts, in some ways I think Christmas would be better if I could just give gifts to my family and spend time with them. This Christmas, I hope that I will still have that feeling, in my family(grandparents, and uncle) there is rough water, my part of the family is caught between a rock and a hard place. It just so happensthat it started just before Christmas last year, but has continued to get worse. I feel that "Christmas Joy" right now, because y'all have once again proven what I knew true Dukes were! I think the meaning of Christmas IS lost already.

Anyway, I cannot say enough, (and I will probably say it every time I write) I truly am proud to be a fan! Thank you to y'all for letting me see that there really are people who have morals in this day and age and that it isn't just a thing of the past!

It IS better to give than to receive....you are absolutely right General Grant. We need to remember the real reasons for the season...and it isn't the plastic Santas for sale alongside the Halloween costumes.

The whole commercialism of the holidays really annoys me... more now than ever. My family and I really try to focus on others around the holidays. We carol at nursing homes, do the Toys for Tots thing (a give-in when you are married to a Jarhead), adopt a needy family through our church...the good feelings you get helping others far outlasts any new gadget or gismo you go buy for yourself...

never been a true fan of walmart, employees are so rude! people shopping there can be just the same way, letting their youngins run unchecked, letting em get away with anything they want (though i blame society for fearing they'll be turned in to dcfs, when i was young we was whupped and we behaved, well for awhile anyway till the cycle happened and i didn't turn out to be a convict *no offense brian and alex*). many of ya'll have another point of it being way too commercial, i do enjoy my sales for when i can get my loved ones something at lesser cost and still hurt stores bottom line, though this year i started making some gifts (quilts, cross stitch) we need to keep a mind on those less fortunate and kick in where we can. imho.

Hey y'all!

Great point deathangel_tori about the homemade gifts! I like that, a lot of times it isn't the big expensive gifts that really count, it is the home made gifts, where you pour your heart and soul into making it that really count. And, I also liked the comment DaisyMaeDuke made about they carol at nursing homes, adopt a family, etc... and about the plastic santas along side the Halloween costumes! That is the true Christmas spirit! That was just wierd this year to see on one side of the aisle Halloween decorations and costumes and on the other side of the same aisle... Christmas decorations. This was at Wal-Mart, and it wasn't even Halloween Yet!

Catch y'all Later!

Toys for Tots is a great program, we've been giving to it every year for over 20 years. I wanted my kids to understand that Christmas wasn't just about what they could get. Sure it's nice to receive presents, who doesn't enjoy that, but it's not anywhere near the most important thing. As for the Christmas decorations alongside the Halloween stuff, it does seem to come earlier every year doesn't it? Before ya know it, they'll be putting up the Christmas stuff in July. I'd laugh, but I'm afraid that it's not as much of a joke as I think it is.

I know I'm in the minority here but I don't really mind Christmas coming earlier and earlier. I realize that it's only happening so the retailers can make more money and that part bothers me....but I love Christmas so much, I enjoy starting to hear stuff about it in mid November. I wouldn't mind hearing about it every day.....just like the Elvis song "Why can't ever day be like Christmas"

Okay, go ahead and criticize me. I don't mind. Like I said, I'm in the minority and I can understand the reasoning for disagreeing. I'm gone.

Hey RogerDuke!

I completely understand what you are saying. Christmas, for some reason, seems to be a season that just has a special feel to it, so I understand what you're sayin'. Although I must say that seeing Halloween costumes ( some were really creepy, I didn't like that) and Christmas decorations in the same aisle seemed really weird. It just didn't seem right. I know what you mean about hearing about Christmas in mid-November, I also enjoy hearing about Christmas, and Christmas music, but not right after they play the Monster Mash!

I know what you mean, too, vinsmouse, Christmas in July. Pretty soon Christmas decorations will share an asile with the Fourth of July decorations!

Oh, RogerDuke, I am sure you don't mind the criticizing, but I am sure you'd rather get a compliment!!!! Have a great day, y'all!
