  1. Anyone else here have Ben Jones' music CDs?  I'd like to hear what others think!

I recently picked up both ("Southern to the Bone" and "One For The Younguns") at Cooter's Place in Gatlinburg.

The music is mix of covers and original songs, most with Ben himself singing the lead.  There are some Dukes references here and there in some of the songs, but otherwise its music that would be right at home in Hazzard: bluegrass, rockabilly, ballads, rhythm and blues, country.

I had the impression that the "Younguns" CD was kids songs, but really its just more music similar what's on the first CD.  The best part about the CD for Dukes fans is that it contains Ben's rendition of 'Good Ol Boys'.  It also contains a song called "Cooter's Place" that sounds like it was meant to be the theme song for Ben's stores (or maybe a Cooter spin off series?).

Both CDs can be purchased individually or together at a discount at cootersplace.com

You can listen to samples of 'Southern' on Amazon.com:

I recommend both CDS for any Dukes fans- its not the kind of silly stuff from the 80s Dukes 'sountrack' record.

Here is the review I put on Amazon for 'Southern To The Bone:

Honest, Southern and pleasant to listen to- like spending some time with an old friend. Mr. Jones was probably the most authentic part of the Dukes of Hazzard cultural phenomenon and you can hear that come through in his music. Some original stuff, some covers, but all clearly done with love, and not some overly polished 'Dukes' merchandise record from the studio marketing department. Just what it should be- fun!

  2. I've very conflicted on the question.  I share everyone's feelings on the more authentic feel of the Georgia episodes.  The brown hills of Southern Cali just didn't cut it as North Georgia.  Plus I have a life-long affection for The Peach State.  HOWEVER, some of my favorite iconic locations from the run of the show are from the Warner Brothers Studios lot- specifically Cooter's Garage and nearby locals in Hazzard Square.  I also find studio backlot sets fascinating in general (don't get me started on he Universal Studios backlot), so ultimately I have to vote for California.

  3. Spike- those were probably the same brand of model pumps I started with.  They don't make the exact correct ones for Cooter's garage, but I got a similar set. I ended up scratch building two pumps but stealing the detail parts (hose, nozzle, crank, etc.) from the store-bought ones.

  4. OK- my bad for not actually watching the eps instead of just scanning through for picture reference!  So maybe the bike is in the garage because he's fixing it for the guy; I suspect when Cooter is sober, he is very apologetic and helpful!

This simplifies things for me- I don't have to match the bike for my diorama since it wasn't Cooter's bike.  I do have an old 1/25 bike that I'd like to include in my model someplace, but now I can just use it as-is.

  5. I grew up with the show, but have had a stronger resurgence of my 'fandom' in the last few years.  I dove heavily into the show since then and have come to understand why it appeals to me.  However, I know few people who are still interested enough to talk about different aspects of the show- that's why I come here.

So for the past few years, I've been wallowing in my Dukes fandom in relative isolation.  That is until this week!  Yes, I have strong feelings about the current controversy, but really I'm having a great time seeing so much Dukes on the news and places like Facebook.  And how cool is it to see Ben Cooter Jones on tv!  I hope this all creates a windfall for his 3 'Cooter's Place' locations and brings fans back to the show.

  6. RogerDuke; as long as you don't come in the summer it should be a pleasant trip! But you should do it; the south is beautiful most times of year; I recommend early fall.

We get out of FL every chance we get; in fact as I type this we are headed back up to the "Hazzard" part of Georgia now! Might stop in Covington again if we have time.
