Luke's First Love -- Part 3
DixieDavenport replied to DixieDavenport's topic in Story Ideas/Fics In Progress/Collaborative EffortsBo turned over for what seemed like the millionth time since going to bed. He knew when he had said he was going to bed that he wouldn't sleep but at least he could be alone with his thoughts without everyone trying to avoid the subject that was one everyones mind. He looked at the empty bed beside him. It just wasn't right for Luke not to be here. Sure, it had been empty since Luke had been in jail, but it was different with him being in the Hazzard Jail. Now, he was gone. He was gone to who knew where and Bo felt more alone than he had in years. Bo looked at the clock. It was 2am. The house was quiet but he knew he wasn't the only one awake. He slide on his jeans and quietly made his way to the front porch steps. He looked up at the stars. The stars he pretty much knew that Luke was unable to see tonight. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Daisy and Dixie were also awake. Dixie had curled up in the rocker with her feet in the seat and her arms locked around her legs. "Why?" she mumbled more to herself than to Daisy. "How could they call what happened at the lake rape? Just because Luke is older? He was a sight more gentle than that creep Tommy was the night he wanted to force me into it and I walked." Daisy looked at Dixie surprised, "What?" Dixie sighed, "Yeah, you remember when Luther 'let' me go out with him?" Daisy nodded 'yes'. "Well, he had started 'pawing' me and told me to 'put out or get out' -- I got out and started walking. Luke happened by in the wrecker and took me home. He stayed with me for several hours with out so much as trying anything because he was afraid Tommy would come to the house while Cooter or Luther wasn't home. If you remember after that Luke and Tommy got into a fight......" Dixie was interupted. "That's what that was about?" Daisy asked surprised Dixie nodded with tears in her eyes, "Yeah, he went to jail then because of me too!" "Sugar, Luke knew what he was doing with Tommy." Daisy said trying to sound convincing she continued, hoping her voice wouldn't give away her doubt. "And, he knew the decisions he made this time were best for you." "Daisy how can you say that? How was him getting the maximum sentence by admiting what we did best for me?" Dixie asked, not believing that Daisy could truely feel this way. "Honey, even if he'd fought this tooth and nail it wouldn't have changed his situation. I think Luke felt like by admiting he was guilty he thought things may have been better for him. But, he knew that by admiting to this it would save you a lot of embarrassment. He did what he could. He did all he could do for both of you." Daisy tried to sound convincing, but it was hard for her to think like she was trying to get Dixie to think. "Come on. It's been a long day. What do you think about trying to get some rest?" "That neither one of us is going to get any sleep." Dixie said flatly. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Jesse Duke sat in his room holding the family Bible that he was trying to concentrate on without much luck. He had to be strong for his family. His entire family. He had turned to the Bible as he often did in times of trouble as a source of comfort, but tonight even this brought him little comfort. Looking out the window, heavenward, he said, "Watch over my boy and keep him safe." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The youngest of the Dukes were also awake though Jeb was trying to act like he was asleep hoping that Coy and Vance would go to sleep so he could have some time to himself. Coy asked Vance, "What do you think it's like being in jail?" Vance replied to Jeb's relief, "I think, I don't want to find out." Jeb could stay silent no longer, "I think that our name is Duke, we live in Hazzard County and I pretty much figure we'll all get to find out, far to soon. Now, go to sleep. Luke wouldn't want you all losing sleep on account of him." Vance said, "And he would want you and Bo and Daisy and Uncle Jesse and Dixie losing sleep?" Being the oldest in the room Jeb snapped at Vance just a bit, "Do as I say not as I do." Then he realilzed how sharp his voice had been. "Look, guys I'm sorry. No, Luke wouldn't want any of of losing sleep because of him. We're all family here and we need each other. Now more than ever." Coy being the youngest asked, "So if we need each other more than ever now, who does Luke have?" Biting his lip hard Jeb sighed and replied, "Us." then he explained, "There may be distance between us but Luke still needs us. It just might have to be through letters or cards but we have to let him know we care about him without making him worry about us. And, we have to let him know we are stepping up to do his share around here so he won't worry about Uncle Jesse. Now let's get some rest so we can do our chores and Luke's tomorrow without having to be asked to." Jeb laid silently for a few seconds before he voiced said, "Guys, I love you." The three knew that they loved each other but they were at the age it had been said less lately. Vance was the first to answer, "I love you two, too." Finally, Coy said in a voice barely above a whisper, but his two cousins heard it loud and clear, "I love ya'll too." They both caught the sniffle that followed.

I'm a Danged Fool
While dropping Cooter off for his date, Luke over heard Dixie asking to go out with Tommy Smith. He decided to hang around for a few minutes after hearing Luther give her permission to go out with this guy. Luke waited for Cooter and Dixie to leave the garage for the house to get ready for their various dates. Luke said calmly, "Luther, I know this is not my business and I gladly shut up any time you tell me to, but, that Tommy Smith came around wanting to date Daisy and Jesse sent him packing. He promised to shoot him if he caught him on the property." Luke paused. He knew Luther would respect Jesse's opinion. "Look, I know my reputation isn't great, but I look like a angel compared to this guy. Luther he's dangerous." Luther was now uncomfortable with this whole situation but stood his ground, "Luke, they are going to the Boar's Nest, a public place where I plan to be. What could it hurt?" Luke needed the extra work and didn't want to make Luther mad. He held up his hands in surrender. "Hey, I'm butting out. Tell Cooter I'll see him at 7am." Luke walked back to the wrecker. He was still annoyed. He hoped to be at the Boar's Nest in case Tommy got over friendly. ~~~~~~~~~~~ Luke had arrived at the Baor's Nest early. Daisy knew that he was running the wrecker and brought him a coffee. "Thanks Daisy." Several coffees later, Luke saw Dixie walk in with Tommy. Daisy leaned over the bar and asked, "Luke? Dixie' s out with Tommy SMITH?" Luke sighed, "It looks that way." "But Luke, Uncle Jesse sent him packing when he wanted to take me out." Daisy said shocked. "I know that, and I informed Luther of that very thing. He obviously sees no harm in it so who am I to butt in?" He asked. Daisy replied sharply. "Well, Luke, I've never known you to HAVE to force a girl to be with you like I've heard he has done." "Daisy, you are right about that. That's something I'd never do, and he better hope he doesn't pull that with Dixie and I'm anywhere close by." Luke said. Daisy heard the sharpness of Luke's tone. She now knew why he was here drinking coffee instead of at the farm. ~~~~~~ After a couple of hours Tommy was trying to become very familiar with Dixie's curves. Luke sat watching with his jaw cletched and his neck muscles tight. Dixie was holding her own either removing the offending hand or putting it in a 'safe' location. Luther Davenport was also in the Boar's Nest but was apparently blind to what was going on. Luke was waiting on either Dixie to put a stop to his roaming hands by getting loud or waiting for them to leave. He planned to follow them. He just didn't feel comfortable with and innocent girl like Dixie being in a vehicle alone with a guy like Tommy. All too soon the phone ran. Daisy answered it, "Boar's Nest. Daisy speaking..... Sure Maybelle. Luke phone." she said. "This is Luke." he replied into the receiver. Maybelle said, "Luke Rosco is in Hazzard pond again and needs a wrecker on the South end." Luke shook his head, "What else is new? I'm on my way." Then to Daisy he said, "Rosco's in Hazzard pond. Keep an eye on them will ya?" He said as he started toward the door. "Sure thing, Sugar." Daisy replied. ~~~~~~~~~~~ Rosco had ridden back to town with his deputy while Luke fished the cruiser out of the pond. As Luke hooked up to the car he'd just pulled out of the pond, it began to rain, as he said out loud to no one but the fish. "I sure wish Boss would send him to driver's school." then he re-thought that statement. "Ok, I just wished he'd learn to stay out of the pond." He said as he tried to stomp out most of the water in his boots before getting into the wrecker. As Luke drove back to town he saw someone walking toward the wrecker. It was a girl. ....... No it was Dixie! He saw she was crying as she walked toward town in the rain. Dixie recognized the wrecker and was more than glad to climb in it after Tommy had given her two options: "Put out or get out!" She had gotten out of his car and began walking, then it began to rain. She was so angery with herself she had almost given up the long walk to town but she just couldn't give 'herself' to that lowlife! just to get a ride home. It didn't take Luke long to figure what had happened as she climbed into the wrecker he turned on the heat and gave her his dry jacket to wear. Without so much as a word Luke pulled out and headed toward the Davenport farm. At the farm Luke sent Dixie to the shower to warm up while he made hot chocolate. He had also placed a change of dry clothes by the bathroom door for her. Luke had no idea the shade of deep purple she'd turn later as she realized that he'd went into her dresser for them. When she entered the living room after her shower Luke met her with a blanket, popcorn and hot chocolate. The night had been chilly even before Luke had to go into Hazzard pond after Rosco's car. He's feet were still cold but he was more worried about Dixie getting sick and what did or could have happened before he got there. After she got settled on the couch Luke sat on the arm of the couch and asked, "Dixie, are you really OK? ....... Nothing, ..... ah, ..... happened, ..... before?" Luke hoped she stop him before he had to go further. Dixie saw Luke's discomfort and replied, "Luke, nothing happened." she bit her lip and continued, "I walked first." Luke suspected the rest but asked, "Tell me exactly what he did." Dixie shook her head. "Nothing. He had been grooping me all evening. He was supposed to be taking me home. He stopped just above where I was walking. It was simple, he gave me a choice to 'put out or get out' -- I got out! He didn't think I would walk that far from town with it raining, but I did." she said with tears in her eyes. Luke was nodding. He pulled her to him and said, "Shhh, I'll take care of it. I promise you, I will take care of him." he said, Luke was mad at himself for not being more conviencing when he talked to Luther and was mad that he 'let' Dixie be put into this situation without stepping in. Luke had decided that he WOULD take this matter up with Tommy Smith, soon, very soon. Luke smiled at the thought, but for now he'd stay and watch TV and comfort Dixie so Mr. Smith wouldn't try to come here while Luther and Cooter were out. Luke planned to leave just before he figured they'd be home. Dixie asked through tear filled eyes, "Luke, you won't tell anyone, will you? Promise me?" Luke nodded, "I promise. Not a word to anybody but Tommy Smith himself." Dixie was too upset to read Luke's meaning. A couple hours later Luke left to put Rosco's car in the fenced in area behind the garage before going home. He had left the Davenport home and parked out of sight until he saw Luther come home, just to make sure Tommy didn't wait on him to leave then show up. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The next day Jesse handed Luke an official looking letter from the Hazzard Courthouse. Luke knew what it was when he saw it. It would be his court date on the fight with Ralph Green. Opening the letter, Luke checked the calendar. It was three weeks away on a Monday morning. "Well, at least I've still got three weeks to make some money for the fine." he said as Jesse watched him mark the calendar. Jesse wasn't all so sure they'd let him off with only a fine. The Hazzard law had wanted the boys long before they had turned 18. They had only been able to get them on a couple of things, where they had only spent the night in the Hazzard jail and then were released to Jesse. Now Rosco had seen Luke hit Ralph so it was possible they'd try to make an example of Luke........ They'd just have to wait until the court date. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Luke's First Love -- Part 3
DixieDavenport replied to DixieDavenport's topic in Story Ideas/Fics In Progress/Collaborative EffortsHandcuff and shackled the van ride to where ever they were going seemed endless for Luke and Mark, but unfortunately it was not endless. Though they couldn't see much from the paneled van, they could see way too much as the van rolled up the the high fences topped with several layers of razor wire. Had anyone been watching, they would have seem both Luke and Mark swollow hard, set their jaws, and square their shoulders for what waited ahead of them. The van made it's way through two main gates and continued for quiet a distance before passing through two more gates. They would later learn that the reception area for the prison and work camp (where they would be) used the same intake area as an intimidation method. Once out of the van other than the massive fences and buildings it was apparent this place was located on a section of flat land that appeared to go on for miles upon miles. In the intake area was the highest sections of double fencing in the entire place. Luke and Mark were taken into the intake area, searched, showered, sprayed, then issued their clothes and linen. Finally they were taken down a massive hallway to were they would later learn was the receiving area for the work farm which was totally separate and much smaller than the prison. They were placed in a cell only slightly bigger than the one in the Hazzard County jail which had two bunks, a toilet area, and one piece metal desk seat which was of course bolted down. They were told they would be housed here for at lease thirty days for processing and orientation before they would be put on work crews on the grounds and then later they could be placed on crews outside the grounds. Once they were basically alone for the first time since leaving Hazzard Mark spoke for the first to Luke without worry of what the guards would think. Neither wanted to give them the satisfaction of appearing worried or intimidated. "Sh--! This place is bigger that Hazzard!" Luke sighed heavily, "I know. What have we got ourselves into?" ~~~~~~~~~~~~ It was almost supper time and Dixie hadn't showed up back at the Duke farm. Jesse walked on to the front porch trying to act unworried. The closest nephew there was Jeb. "Jeb, can you find Dixie?" There was no need in Jesse explaining to Jeb what had happened. He saw her leave. Then, Jesse, had the unpleasant task of telling the others that Luke had been transported out of the County. Other than Dixie, Jesse knew he'd have a time with Bo for quiet sometime. Jeb stood up, "I think maybe I can." he headed off to check the barn and found nothing. After checking several spots he decided to try the back forty as a hunch. Sometimes Luke would go there if he was feeling down, but Jeb didn't think he'd showen it to her, but then there was a lot of surprises he was finding out lately. As he climbed the fence into the back forty he could barely make out a shadow near the base of an old Oak tree by the stream than ran through the property. He very slowly and quietly made his way to the tree. When he was only inches away from Dixie, he said, "Dixie." very quietly. "Can I join you?" She never took her eyes off the water, just nodded, 'yes'. They sat there staring at the water for a long while without saying anything. Then, Jeb figured he'd better get her back to the house before they were worried he hadn't found her. "Dixie ......" Before he could say more, she turned and looked at him, "Why? Jeb, I really love him. Twenty years or two hundred won't change that ....... Why is my Father doing this to me? and to Luke?" Jeb sighed, "Come here." He held out his arms for her. She found herself holding on to him like her life depended on it, yet she didn't not shed the first tear. Jeb knew her love for his cousin. Dixie knew Jeb's Duke loyalty to Luke. They both understood they could never be boyfriend and girlfriend but it was this moment they bonded with each other in what would remain even through years of separation a very close friendship. Jeb vowed to himself and to her (and later he would also write Luke) that as long as she was near him nobody would hurt her in anyway just as if Luke were here himself to protect her. ~~~~~~~~~~~ At the house, Jesse and Carolyn went through the motions of fixing supper knowing that no one was going to feel much like eating. They heard the 'kids' begin to fill the porch. Coy and Vance were on the steps. Daisy had taken Jesse's rocker where she often went when she needed to feel comforted. Jesse looked out the living room window at the three. He said to Carolyn, "It's going to be a long night. Still no sign of Jeb and Dixie and I haven't seen Bo since, well, ............." Carolyn placed her hand on Jesse's shoulder. "They are close, Jesse. It will take time." Jesse nodded as he opened the screen door he could see Jeb and Dixie walking up the yard, about that time Bo came out of the barn looking like his chin was going to drag the ground. When they got to the porch Jesse said, "Supper is sandwiches. The table is set when you all feel like eating. You all need to eat something." Coy and Vance being growing boys headed to the kitchen. Daisy said, "Come on Dixie." Dixie went with Daisy followed by Jeb. Bo remained on the swing. Carolyn took Jesse by the arm. "Come on Jesse. Take your own advice." Jesse nodded, "Bo are you going to join us?" Bo voice wa barely recognizable. "Thanks, Uncle Jesse, but I just don't think I can keep anything down yet. Maybe later. I promise." Jesse nodded, as he and Carolyn walked in Daisy was trying to get Dixie to let her make a sandwich. All she could manage to get her to put in her plate was a few chips and a half of glass of pop. Jesse of course noticed that Daisy also only put chips on her dish. Jesse and Carolyn were making yet another pot of coffee when Dixie set her plate down. Carolyn noticed she was looking a bit 'green'. Her nerves had gotten the best of her and her stomach refused to hold any food down as she bolted to the bathroom. Again, Jesse, stopped Carolyn as he saw Jeb head out after her. Since she had left the door to the bathroom open Jeb went in still leaving the door open as he reached for a towel and sat on the edge of the tub. ~~~~~~~~~~~ Later on the front porch Jesse said quietly to Carolyn, "I really hate this. There is a lot of growing up going on out here today and I can't do a, ........." Jesse paused, and rubbed his tired face, " darned thing to make it any easier on any of them here, ......... or, ........ the one that ain't here. I see the pain they are going through and we all have each other. Luke is alone except for Mark McCormick." Carolyn looked puzzled, "Mark? Mark who?" Jesse waved his hand. "Luke has a friend. Actually, he was almost engaged to Mark's sister at one time. It seems they picked the same time to get into trouble over their heads. Judge Hardcastle made a deal with Mark that if he'd plead guilty instead of a trial that he'd see they were put together at a 'work farm' instead of a prison." Though Carolyn had been out of Hazzard for years she still felt very close to Jesse and his family. "I'm sorry, Jesse, if I had known, maybe there is something I could have done. Is there anything I can do now? Would it do any good to 'convience' Luther to drop the charges? or talk to the Judge?" Jesse patted her hand. "I think we are way past that now, but thanks." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The night was long in Hazzard for Bo and Dixie and the others. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ It was longer still at the work camp for Luke and Mark, being locked into a small unfamiliar place, with all the strange sounds of the 'prison' or work farm or whatever polite society named it. It was still a place that 'housed' those that society didn't want. Both Luke and Mark were well aware they were now apart of this group, that seemed to wake up in the evening and sleep the day away, if they weren't on a work crew. Work. Luke would be glad for work to busy his mind. Mark would even be glad for the distraction. This too, would have to wait, for now all there was to do was to stare at the three cedar block walls, cement ceiling and floor, and the God awful view of the steel barred front of the locked cell and listen to those society had 'thrown away'............... yet they were thankful the door was locked and it was only them inside the cell.............

I'm a Danged Fool
When Luke came out of the bathroom after his shower, Beth, Daisy and Dixie were setting the table for lunch. Luke felt much better than he had before the shower. After grace was said the family took their seats around the table. The girls had fixed Hamburgers, fries, with a plate of lettuce, tomatoes, onions and cucumbers cut up on the side. As were the other hungry guys, Luke was eagerly filling his plate when Jeb had to be the wise guy, "Bet this is sure better than what the Hazzard Jail is serving for lunch." Luke shot him a look, "Yeah, well, I do too. Just remember you last name is Duke too and your day will come!" "Boys! That's enough. Not at the table." Jesse said firmly. The very much grown 'boys' hushed. Luke wasn't happy with the teasing he was getting about spending the night in jail in front of Beth and Dixie. Always before when he and Bo had gotten into trouble, the teasing had been more of a 'guy' thing that had mainly been saved for the garage or when they were alone. Though Luke and Jeb had worked out their differences for the most part he got the feeling that Jeb was intentionally trying to annoy him. Luke watched Jeb as they ate lunch. It was becoming more clear why Jeb decided to pick on him today. 'He's trying to impress Dixie! Well, good! but not at my expense.' Luke thought. "Well, boys, we've got to make up the work we didn't get done this morning this afternoon. If ya'll are done, we better get at it." Jesse said. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ That evening Luke had decided to go talk to Luther Davenport about driving the wrecker to make some extra money in case he needed it when he went to Court. Luke knew that anyone else in the County needing extra work done had pretty much saved it for Bo because they knew he needed it. Luke went in the garage seeing Luther working on a pickup truck. "Luther, can I talk to you a minute?" Luke asked. Wiping his hands on a towel, Luther replied, "Sure, Luke. What can I do for you?" "Well, I know between working here and running the wrecker you and Cooter have been spread pretty thin with Rosco taking up swimming lessons. Since I have covered for you two occassionaly I was wondering if you'd let me work a little more regular for a couple weeks?" Luke asked. Luther thought about this, he and Cooter usually took turns working twelve hour shifts which did have a tendancy to put a damper on Cooter's 'social' life at times. "Well, now, Luke you do have a point. I guess me and Cooter could both use a little free time for the garage to get caught up and he certainly won't complain if he gets a few free evenings off. This won't interfere with the farm's ah, ..... 'business' will it?" Luther asked more referring to the moonshining business. Luke nodded 'no', "Jesse's got a couple good orders to get out but we should be able to work around those and still give you all some free time." Luther cautioned, "Ok, Luke, but probably most of the time I'll need you will be in the evenings." Luke read the man's mind. "I know, which just might keep me out of trouble since I won't drink if I'm driving the wrecker and I'm not seeing anyone at the moment so this should work out Ok." Luther had to grin at the young man before him. Jesse had raised some good kids. "Care to tell me what part you'll be needing for the General Lee when you're done?" "What?" Luke looked confussed. Luther explained. "It's just that usually when you get so eager to work you are doing it for parts for the car." "Nah, nothing like that. Actually, I kinda had to teach someone some 'manners' the other night after a race about the time Rosco showed up." "Ouch." Luther replied. "Yeah." Luke replied, "So I figured I got my tail in trouble I should be the one to get it out. Hopefully, they are as greedy as ever and decide they want the money more than me." Luther looked skeptical, "I hope so, but wouldn't count on it. They've wanted you two for a long time." "Yeah, I know." Luke sighed, "That's what worries me. Thanks again." "No, problem. When Cooter comes back in I'll have him bring the wrecker out to your place this evening. Oh, Luke, here's the set of keys to the garage and the lot out back in case you have to put anything back there tonight." Luther said. As Luke climbed in the General Lee he realized this had bee the first time Luther had given him the keys to the garage and the back lot. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Later that evening, Jeb yelled at Luke, "Are you coming to the Boar's Nest tonight?" Jesse was just listening to the conversation from the other room. Luke replied, "I might be by later when I run Cooter home." Jeb said, "But, Luke, Cooter ain't here." "I know but he will be when he brings the wrecker by." Luke offered as an explaination. Jeb, still confussed, asked, "So do I or do I not have a ride home?" "Don't count on me I'll have the wrecker tonight." Luke said as Jeb went out the door annoyed that Luke wouldn't be there to bring him home. Jesse continued to read the paper. Luke walked in with coffee in his hand. "You heard?" Jesse nodded, 'yes', "Care to explain?" "Well, after the other night, I figured with Bo doing all the odd jobs in the County that maybe Luther and Cooter might like some spare time. I can make hopefully enough money before Court to pay the fine for the other night." Luke explained, while picking up Jesse's coffee cup and refilling them both. Jesse looked at his nephew with approval, knowing that if he was driving the wrecker he may go to the Boar's Nest but he'd be drinking coffee or soda while there. Luke knew that when working with automobiles and wreckers alcohol just plain did not mix. ~~~~~~~~~ Cooter showed up a short while later. "Luke, I can't think of how to thank you! I've been wanting to take Kathy out since that night at the Boar's Nest but I've had the wrecker every night while Dad has been busy with 'extra' cars at night." "Say no more." Luke said slapping Cooter on his back. "I'll bring the wrecker to the garage about 7 and you can have me back here about the time work begins out here. Come on I'll run you home so you can get cleaned up if you have a 'hot' date." "Ye -haw!!!" Cooter said as the tow headed towards the wrecker!

I'm a Danged Fool
It did Luke a world of good that Jesse came after him before whoever was coming after Ralph got there. Luke couldn't help the slight smile as Peggy let him out of the cell, leaving Ralph in the one beside him. As they came up the stairs where Jesse, Rosco and Boss Hogg would be waiting, Peggy had to say, "Luke, that remark, last night, you know about Ron...." Luke nodded that he knew what she was talking about. "Thanks. That guy was even getting under my skin but I couldn't say anything." she explained. "I know. That's why I did. I could! And I just might have to arrange that 'meeting'." Luke smiled wickedly. Peggy just shook her head as they topped the steps. Boss Hogg said, "Well, well, well, looky here. My what a joy it is to have you as a guest, Luukkee." He exagerated his name. "Where's that cousin of yours? That wife of his keeping him home?" Boss gloated. Before Luke could answer, Jesse said calmly, "Never mind that. JD, I believe our business is complete. I'll be taking my boy home now." Jesse turned to walk with Luke close behind. Nothing was said between the two until they were in the truck and starting out of town. Luke said, "Thanks for coming Uncle Jesse." "Don't thank me too quick!" Jesse snapped just a bit. "What in tarnation were you doing? You know everytime you all go up there racing SOMEBODY gets in trouble and it's usually ya'll!" Jesse fussed. Luke knew where Jesse was coming from, but had to disagree, the only time Jesse knew they were up there was when they HAD gotten into trouble, but they had been there plenty of times without anyone getting into trouble. "I know. I'm sorry Uncle Jesse. See he challenged me to a race. You know the history between us. Yes," he answered without being asked, "Robin was there...." "So there was no way you weren't going to race?" Jesse asked. Luke shook his head, "Pretty much........ I'm sorry. Then, he was mad that I won. So he said I jumped the line. I hadn't, but agreed to race him again. I didn't want him or anyone to think I had to jump the line to beat him. I waited until he got a good before I pulled out, then passed him after turning around. By half way back I had a good lead." Luke sighed, "As I neared the line I took the General out of gear and let it coast to the line." "Being a bit showy are we?" Jesse asked. Nodding Luke said, "Ah, yeah, but I couldn't help myself after he called me a cheat." Jesse replied, "You do know you have to go to Court on this. If you are lucky you'll only get a fine. As you also know things are tighter at the farm than I care for Bo and especially Beth to know, so I sure hope you can get creative as to how you intend to pay that fine or you'll have to take the time instead." Luke nodded. He knew as did Jesse that on something minor the Hazzard Courts usually gave you the option of like $50 or 5 days, or $100 or 10 days, etc. because they were greedy and would rather have the money and most Hazzard citizens would rather pay it than to be in jail. "I'll think of something Uncle Jesse. I know things are tight." Luke was hoping he could talk to Cooter's Father and maybe get to drive the wrecker to make the extra money. As much as Rosco and his deputies had went swimming lately he was sure Cooter and his Dad could use some time for their hip waders to dry out. Back at the farm Dixie let out a breath she had been holding and didn't even know she was holding it when she heard Luke's voice as the other guys were evidently kidding him in the front yard as Jesse came in the door. Though she couldn't hear all of what was said she did hear: Coy ask, 'What kind of birds don't fly?' then Luke replied, 'Dead ones! Want me to show you?' Dixie was in Daisy's room when he came in so he didn't know she was there. Luke was glad only the guys were out front. He felt a mess. He knew he hadn't sleep well and hoped he looked much better than he felt. All he wanted right then was a shower!

I'm a Danged Fool
The next morning found Jesse up early making coffee. He hadn't slept much thinking about his fool nephew. Dixie was still awake when she heard Jesse in the kitchen. She eased out of the bed and put on her jeans and shirt while still barefoot, she headed to the kitchen. "Anything I can do?" Jesse just smiled at the girl who by the looks of her face and hair had not slept well if at all. "Not right now. I don't figure anybody got much sleep so I think I'll let them sleep in a bit. What's got you up so early?" Dixie smiled a weak smile. "Well, with all the happenings of last night I really couldn't sleep.Things are sure different here than where Mom lives. Until I came to Hazzard I'd never known anyone who had went to jail. What will happen to Luke?" Jesse asked before answering her questions, "Was Luke drinking last night?" Dixie nodded 'no', "Not really. He'd had a beer at the Boar's Nest earlier. Then, at the lake he had opened a beer but only took a drink maybe two out of it before all this happened." Jesse nodded and set a second cup of coffee on the table which Dixie nodded her thanks, "Well, now Sweetheart, yes things are different here. I then I have five fool nephews who usually get into trouble because they like to annoy our Sheriff. See the boys and Rosco play game with each other and Daisy and I ususal end up in the middle. I guess now you join us there. I really don't mind going after them, just don't tell them that, when it's because Rosco has made up something or they have forced him into taking them to jail. What makes me mad is when they really do something like last night to have their butt thrown in jail. I guess no matter how good I raised them their foolish pride and hot tempers win out at least sometimes. As for Luke, well, I'll head out of here as soon as I think the Courthouse is open for business. I'll bond him out but he's likely going to have to show up for Court and if Rosco saw them fighting then even the other guy can't drop the charges. Hopefully he'll just have to pay a fine which he better figure out how to make some extra money cause things are tight here," letting his own temper get to him Jesse fussed, "Or he can just set there for however long the Sheriff wants to hold him when he goes back to Court." Dixie hoped Jesse didn't mean that. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ It was still early when the Correctional Officer that Rosco had called into to stay at the jail because of his 'prisoners' brought in coffee and asked, "Are you two ready for breakfast?" Luke nodded, 'no', "Coffee's fine for me. Thanks Peggy." Ralph couldn't keep quiet, "Oh, that's cozzie, you know the guards, guess you know their families too? Ya been here so often!" Luke saw the look cross Peggy's face. He decided he didn't have a job riding on his reply like she did. "Yeah, her husbands a State Trooper. I'll make arrangements to let him know you too. Maybe even introduce you two!" That was it. All Peggy could take she had to turn before she laughed at them both. Luke for his reply. The other guy for the look on his face at Luke's answer!

Luke swore to himself. Just what he needed was to in jail over night and have to reason he was there right beside him. Luke turned over on his side hoping that Ralph would just keep quiet, but if he knew him he'd have something 'smart' to say which would just peeve Luke off more....... ~~~~~ Bo opened his bedroom door gently, hoping that Beth was asleep. He eased in the room and quietly shut the door. Beth said, "I'm awake. You can quiet tip toeing around." Bo sat down on the bed taking his boots off. Beth sat up and hugged him. "Not that I'm complaining or anything but what's that for?" Beth was choked up as she said, "For coming home tonight." She swollowed, "Instead of being with Luke." Bo turned to his wife and saw her very upset, "Honey. Shhh. It's Ok. I knew there was going to be trouble but I couldn't stop it. Luke did not need my help with Ralph or with getting into trouble." Bo sighed. Beth knew the answer before she asked but had to ask anyway, "And had he, you would have been right beside him. Wouldn't you?" Bo bite his lip as he looked into Beth's eyes before answering ........ ~~~~~~~ Luke's ex girlfriend and Ralph's current girlfriend, Robin looked on as Rosco put them both in the cruiser. She knew her friends were looking at her. She felt her face turn beat red with embarrassment. She had been lucky up unitl now not to have witnessed these two acting like idiots, usually she just had to hear about it. She didn't have a clue how to go about helping Ralph. She turned to look into the car, yes, he had left the keys. All she knew to do was to take his car to her house and call his parents for him. She was sure they would not be happy about her calling them nor would they be happy about having to come to Hazzard to get Ralph, if they came.

Luke's First Love -- Part 3
DixieDavenport replied to DixieDavenport's topic in Story Ideas/Fics In Progress/Collaborative EffortsCarolyn Davenport was not expecting THAT! She was so shocked that she could not hide her surprise. She stood straight up, looked at her daughter who appeared much older than a mere 16, then she turned away to TRY to get a grip on her own emotions before she spoke to Dixie. She stepped to the front door and said, "Jesse? Would you mind coming out here for a bit?" Dixie watched her Mother very closly trying ot gage her response. She asked Jesse to join them this may not be good. Uncle Jesse came out on the porch. "What can I do for you Carolyn?" "Maybe I missed something in Dixie's explaination as to why I'm here and I might need your help controling my temper." she said still not speaking to Dixie. "Well, now I'm not sure how I can help but I'll do my best. As for tempers, I think there been far too many turned loose on this. Now, for starters, like I've told Luke and Dixie I can't abhold what they did, but like I told Luther what's done is done." Jesse paused, "Our families have been close for years and believe me if this was Daisy the young man would be paying dearly but not like Luke is." "Jesse I know he's your nephew. I've known him since he's been in this world and I've always loved him as I have all the kids." Carolyn paused, thinking, "Did he just run off or has he even made an offer to make this right? Where is he? I'd like to hear his side of this." Jesse looked at Dixie. "You didn't finish the story?" Dixie just bit her lip and shook her head. "No. No, .... I ah, hadn't gotten that far only that the Troopers showed up and that them or Luther were happy about it. Mom, Luke has asked Luther to let us get married. He even asked the Judge in Court to over rule Luther which the Judge said he couldn't do......" "Judge?" Carolyn asked. She figured that between Jesse and Luther they could have worked this out without getting a Judge into it. Jesse took over the explianation, "See, they charged Luke with Statutory Rape because of the age difference....." "Oh, no!" Carolyn explained. Though she wasn't happy about the whole thing either she couldn't believe this. "Luther stood by and let that happen? As close as we've all been?" With spite Dixie hissed, "No, he didn't just let it happen he pushed for it to happen!" "So where is Luke now?" Dixie's Mother asked. Jesse spoke up, "He's been in jail since this happened. He turned down bond being set and plead guilty to keep Dixie from having to undergo the embarassment of the tests to prove he was guilty or innocent. Luke also told me that he thought Dixie was 18 and she didn't realize how much trouble her being 16 could cause him." Carolyn wasn't happy with her daughter or Luke but from just the little she was hearing it sounded like Luke was trying to make up for this. "Tell me everything. Then, I'm going to town and I plan to have a long talk with Luke and then I plan to have it out with a ceratin husband of mine!" Jesse started to begin when the phone rang. "I'll be right back." He went just inside the door to answer the phone. Carolyn and Dixie could hear his end of the converation. "Duke Farm." Peggy shook her head. This was going to be the hardest phone call she'd made since she had been working as a Correctional Officer. "Mr. Duke, this is Sgt. Blevins from the Hazzard County Jail." Jesse hoped she was calling to ask him to bring something for Luke. "Yes, Ma'am." "Mr. Duke, Luke asked me to call you. Department of Corrections picked Luke and Mark up earlier today. I'm sorry that I had to wait before calling but for security reasons it couldn't be helped." She explained. It was all Jesse could do to find his voice, "I understand. Thank you for calling." Peggy said, "Mr. Duke I'm sorry to have been the one to call. Also, Luke had some personal property here you can pick up anytime." Jesse said, "I'll be down later today. I'm glad it was you that called, my boys have always spoken well of you. Thanks again." Was about all Jesse could manage to say as he wiped a tear from his cheek as Dixie and Carolyn came into the house. Putting his hankerchief away Jesse told Carolyn. "Looks like that talk with Luke is going to have to wait. Department of Corrections has already picked him up." Dixie didn't wait to hear all of Jesse's sentence she just turned and bolted out the front door and headed across the field. Carolyn looked at her with concern and started out the door. Jesse stopped her. "Let her be a spell. I'll send one of the kids after her if she doesn't show up in a bit."

Bo gently turned the door knob to Jesse's room and stuck his head in. "Uncle Jesse? Are ya, awake?" Jesse Duke replied, "I am now." "Figured ya heard us come in." Bo stated, "Luke ain't with us." Jesse was setting up fully awake now. "Rosco got him for racin' a bit ago. He told me to tell ya at breakfast, but I figured ya heard us come in." "Racin'?" Jesse asked, "Just who was he racin'?" Bo sighed heavily, "Ralph Green and he beat him. Beat him good, twice. Then Rosco showed up right after Luke had to teach him some manners." "Manners?" Jesse asked, though he knew it had been an on going thing with Luke and this Ralph Green since they had played ball against each other and especially since Luke and Robin had broken up and she was dating Ralph. "Come in. Care to elaborate?" Bo went in and shut the door. "Luke was challenged and beat him fair and square. Then, Ralph started running his mouth that Luke jumped the starting line and wanted another chance to wn his money back. Luke handed Cooter another $50.00 and said he'd give him a chance to win it back or loose another $50.00. Well, the flag dropped, " Bo left out the part about Daisy throwing the starting flag. "Ralph took off like greased lightening. Luke set there at the staring line. When Ralph was half way to the turn around Luke pulled out. He caught him at the turn around and passed him coming back. When he got about 30 feet fromthe finish line he took the General out of gear and drifted across the finish line." "Ralph was pissed?" Jesse asked. "Oh, yeah. Luke went to his car before he got out of it. I just knew there was going to be trouble but I couldn't get there in time. Ralph swung first. Luke bloodied his nose, then Ralph came at him again. Luke had had all he could take and put him on the ground. It was about that time Rosco showed up." "So they got Luke for fighting, not racing?" Jesse asked. Bo stated, "Right." Jesse nodded. "Go on to bed. There's nothing we can do tonight." "That's what Luke said. He didn't even want me to wake ya tonight. Dixie came home with us and is staying with Daisy." Bo added as he turned to leave the room. "Night Uncle Jesse. Sorry I had to tell ya everything." Jesse smiled at the young man. Knowing that a few months earlier he'd be bailing out two nephews in the morning not one. It looked like Beth had given Bo some scense. Now if Luke would just get some! Jesse turned over, pulled the covers back around him, yet, he knew he'd not sleep with Luke not at home. ~~~~~~~~~~~ Finally alone with Daisy in her room, Dixie began to cry. Daisy knew it was coming from the moment she saw her reaction at the lake. "Honey, Luke knew what he was doing and the risked he was taking before he left for the lake." Dixie looked surprised. "Any time they race up there they risk going to jail. It is just lucky Rosco showed up after the race not during it. Each time they go up there they are risking not only going to jail but their drivers license too." Daisy explianed. "And Luke still went and raced?" Dixie asked surprised. "Yeah." Said Daisy, "And he'll be right back there next time too." Dixie had to ask, "Why?" "Its just his way. Those boys have raced up there even before they had a driver's license to loose." Daisy added, "Honey, I saw the look on your face as Rosco was cuffing Luke, I saw how bad it hurt you. Don't let Luke see that. Instead on just know that you care he's likely to come to you which would get him in more trouble for resisiting arrest." Dixie looked at Daisy confussed. "I'm serious. If he know it hurts you, then he's likely to come to you. Are you ready for bed?" Daisy asked. Dixie couldn't believe she was being so calm. "Ah, ..... yeah, ...... but I'm not sure how much sleep I'll get." Daisy saw the concern on Dixie's face, "Honey, Jesse will have him home by lunch." "I guess it's pretty silly me worrying about him when he probably will never give me a second look ......" Dixie left the rest of her statement unsaid. "Sugar, you may be just what Luke needs, if he'd just get his head out of the sand and see it." Trying to cover her feelings Dixie said, "I just mean, I'd like to be freinds with Luke and all the guys. I know they'd never think of me as more than a kid sister." Daisy turned the covers back on her bed, "Come on. Let's not keep Jesse up. If Bo told him about Luke tonight, he's sure not to be in a good mood." ~~~~~~~~~~~ After being questioned by Rosco, Luke had been put in a cell downstairs. This wasn't his first time in jail but it was his first without Bo there. He stretched out on the steel cot with a way too thin mattress. Silently he wished he'd drank more so that he might be able to get some sleep, as it was Luke knew he'd be luck to fall asleep by morning. The cell that he was in couldn't be much bigger than a 6 by 8 with bars on three sides with the outside wall making up the fourth side. Small spaces had never bothered Luke before but being locked into such a space had always been a trying experience but usually he was trying to keep Bo calm. Luke seemed to handle this much better when concerntrating on keeping Bo from thinking about being locked up like this. Just as he was about to calm himself from the evenings events, Rosco brought Ralph Green doewnstairs and locked him in the cell beside Luke..................

Probation question
Being Hazzard County ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE!!! I think it is up to the Judge to set the lenght and conditions of Porbation -- which means they never went to prison === Parole would mean they spent some time in prison then was released on much the same conditions as Probabtion. I'd say if they knew the Dukes produced a lot of shine they would probably make it lenghty. I used to know what the prison sentence was for hauling shine -- I was a bit of a history buff -- it was much more in this state during the prohibition years. Now the first time is a misdemeanor here and you have to be hauling more than a gallon. WHICH MEANS you can haul all you want one gallon at a time as long as you are not seliing it! It is not illegal to make a certain quanity of untaxed liquour here for your own use. In the show I've heard them say they if caught they'd spend 2 year; then 10 years; then the rest of their natural life in prison for hauling shine -- it was different in several shows. One reference is when they are in the blue car of Cooter's in MAry Kays Baby. I think Waylon said "they knew getting caught with that shine meant spending 2 years in prison as sure as .........." There may be a reference in High Octane too. Dixie

Rosco said, "Kew, Kew, Kew. That's where your wrong Duke. I saw you hit him! All you both did was confirm he hit you too. I love it! I love it!" Luke sighed. It was going to be a LONG night. There was nothing worse than spending the night in the Hazzard County jail except to watch Rosco gloat that you were spending the night in the Hazzard County jail! At the jail Rosco put Ralph in the 'holding' cell upstairs as he had Luke to set down still cuffed at his desk while he asked very slowly several pages of booking questions that Rosco knew 90 % of the answeres to. Finally Luke's 'torture' was over and Rosco took him downstairs. Only to begin to 'torture' Ralph with the same questions and process, then take Ralph down and place him int he cell next to Luke..............." ~~~~~~~~~~ At the lake Boasked Daisy and Dixie, "Are you all ready? There's been enough trouble out here for one night???" he was sure Beth would not be happy in the morning even though he hadn't gotten in toruble!

Ralph was in no hurry to spend a night in jail, but he wasn't ready to let Luke off so easy either. After a moment of indecision, he said, "Well, yes, Sheriff. I, ah, mean, no, that's not what happened. He Just walked up and knocked the he-- out of me. I think he's still jealous that I have his girl." "Yeah, and I suppose I also punched myself in the jaw!" exclaimed Luke. If he was going to set in jail and hear Jesse in the morning then Ralph could Da-- well join him!" Rosco being a good law man looked the two over. He had seen Luke punch Ralph, but Luke did have quite a bruise forming on his jaw and heading toward his eye. Rosco had originally been called because people were supposed to be racing out here. He didn't see that kind of evidence but did see that a two party fight had happened. "Ok, both of you put your hands on the car." Luke complied, then with a sigh and a nod towards Dixie, "Bo?" Bo nodded back from where he stood, "She'll be fine. I'll take her home. Ya, want me to wake Jesse tonight?" Luke said as Rosco cuffed him and put him in the car, "There's no need tonight. Tell him at breakfast." Daisy looked over at Dixie. She saw a look of horror and knew exactly what it would do to Luke if he saw it. Quickly stepping between Dixie and Rosco's patrol car, she said, "Dixie, don't. It will make things worse for Luke." She placed her arm around Dixie and headed her away from the scene as Rosco in an attempt to separate the two placed a handcuffed Ralph in the front of his cruiser. "And you said I was being 'cute'! Cut off your own nose to spite your face, right Green? All you had to do was go along and we could have settled our differences after Rosco left." Rosco said, "Kew, Kew, Kew. That's where your wrong Duke. I saw you hit him! All you both did was confirm he hit you too. I love it! I love it!" Luke sighed. It was going to be a LONG night. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

When he came back at Luke, the dark haired man was waiting for him he drew his fist back and landed a good solid blow right in Ralphs stomach, effectively taking his breath away just as headlights lite up the place. Luke was still standing over Ralph who still was trying to remember how to breath as Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane said, "Freeze! All of you just Freeze it right there!"

Unfortunately, Ralph didn't seem to think it was such a good race he was out of his car and heading toward the General Lee. Luke took his beer from Dixie and said just loud enough for her to hear , "I remember this being a bit fuller." She smile impishly and shrugged her shoulders. From her view she saw Ralph heading that way. Luke back was toward Ralph so she said, "Luke we may have a problem?" Luke turned to see Ralph very unhappily heading towards him. He waited. Ralph said, "That was REAL CUTE Duke! Care to try that again and see if you can keep from jumping the (starting) line this time? And give me a chance to win my money back." Luke smiled. "I'll give you a chance to win your money back or loose another $50.00." He said handing his $50.00 to Cooter to hold. Everyone trusted Cooter and everyone also knew not to buck him for the money IF you didn't win. "But, Ralph, I ain't NEVER jumped a line." Luke said flatly as he finished the last of the beer that he'd only had a drink of. He would sip on a beer between races but if he came to drink he wouldn't race. Luke and Ralph were strapped in and lined up. Daisy threw the starting flag. Ralph took jumped off the line. Luke sat there. Bo looked over worried that something had happened to the General Lee, then saw Luke smiling. He looked up the road, Ralph was half way to the turn around spot. As Bo looked back Luke took off like greased lightening! Luke was on Ralphs tail as they turned to come back to the line. He soon passed Ralph and had a good lead. When Luke was about twenty five feet from the starting line it was obvious that he took the General Lee out of gear and crossed the starting line ahead of Ralph in Neutral! Bo looked over at Cooter and shook his head, "Oh, man! Did you see that? This is not going to be good!" Dixie asked, "Why's that Bo? Luke just won." "No, Honey, Luke didn't JUST win he beat the socks off him and rubbed it in Ralph's face that he beat him!" Cooter explained. Dixie had never been with them when they raced. Bo added, "And back when they played football there has never been any love between thosse two." "Yeah, they even broke each others bones in a couple of those games!" Cooter added. "What? You are kidding ain't you?" Dixie asked shocked. Cooter said, "Nope, I was on the field when it all went down." "No wonder they don't like each other." Dixie replied. Bo said, "That's not the half of it. Luke dated a girl. She was pushing him for a promise that they would get married. Well, you know Luke, he bolted! He has even said if she hadn't pushed it was likely he would have asked her to marry him sometime in the future. But the girl had a 'time' frame. She went out and got engaged to none other than Ralph!" "Wow!" was all Dixie could say. Then she asked, "Are they still together?" Bo scanned the crowd, "Yeah, they are still together. See the shorter girl with the light brown hair over there with those girls? That's her." Dixie checked out Luke's former girl friend and began comparing herself against the other girl. Luke was out of the General Lee and around the car front before Bo could get to him, "Da-- it!" Bo said, then added, "Luke don't be a jack a$$." Luke was beside Ralph's car before he got out. "Well, did you think that was 'cute' too or did I show you that my car is just plain faster than yours?" Ralph replied by ........................

Cooter, always the one with a comment, said, "Yep, she's going!" Everyone laughed. ~~~~~~~~~ Bo insisited on taking Beth's car in case she wanted to come home early. Which worked well with Luke's plans to go racing after the band. He didn't think Bo would take Beth out to the lake to see the races but he could be wrong. Cooter was taking the wrecker figuring on maybe making some change from the loosers or the racers who broke down tonight. He called to Daisy who had the night off, "Want to ride to the Boar's Nest with me?" "Why sure Cooter!" she said climbing in the wrecker. Daisy was one of few girls who'd ride that truck and not worry about getting 'dirty'. "Oh, good, that means I can ride with you? I just love riding in the General Lee." Dixie said playfully. Luke replied, "Well, come on. Last one to the Boar's Nest buys!" Bo shook his head, "Count me out of this guys. Beth's with me." Luke threw up his hand acknowledging what Bo had said. He fired up the General Lee and was out ahead of Cooter in a blink. The General Lee might be fast but so was Cooter's sooped up wrecker! Cooter jumped out behind Luke, hoping to find some place to make a move around the orange Charger. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Several hours later the band had began to pack up. Luke asked Bo, "Are you all coming to the lake for a bit? Bo replied, "You know I'd love to, but...." He was cut off by Beth saying, "Honey, go on. Have fun with the guys. I'll meet you at the farm." She saw the look from Bo. "I mean it. You haven't been out without me since we got married. Go." She said kissing him. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Daisy again rode with Cooter to the lake, while Bo, Luke and Dixie took the General Lee. At the lake Luke popped the trunk of the General and took out a beer. Several other cars were pulling in to either race or watch the races. BALLADEER: "Now ain't it amazing how many people show up for an illegal race that's suppose to be a secret?" Luke had no sooner took the lid off the beer when his ex-girl friends new boy friend, Ralph, said to Luke, "I feel real lucky tonight ......." Luke replied, "Well, you ain't!" While staring him down. Bo nudged Cooter when he saw the exchange, "Oh, Sh--!" "Hey, I got to be luckier than you! I already have the price!" Ralph said. "If you are so lucky, prove it!" Luke said pulling a $50.00 bill from his pocket. He took just one long drink of beer and turn to Dixie and said, "Hold this for me. I'll be back before it gets hot." Dixie smiled. She had often held the guys beers at the garage while they worked on a car. She knew they knew she would 'snitch' a drink or two, maybe three here and there. Luke and Ralph lined up the cars. Daisy waved the starting flag and they were off..........................

When Dixie returned the finish helping paint, Daisy asked with as evil grin, "Where did you get off to?" Dixie found herslef blushing for no reason, "I told ya I was going to take the guys a glass of lemonade." Beth joined in the fun, "I could have walked to town and back by now! "Oh, I wasn't gone THAT long! Besides I had to bring the glass back in." Dixie said. "Oh, you took the guys a drink and brought back ONE glass? Who's ....... glass ....... was ....... IT?????" "Leave me alone!" Dixie fused. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ As everyone gathered for supper the familiar sound of the wrecker could be heard soon followed by Cooter knocking on the door. Luke spoke up, "Come on in Cooter. Care to join us for supper?" "Well, if ya don't mind? I'd love to!" Cooter replied Jesse spoke up, "Sure Cooter there's plenty help your self." Cooter being almost as big a part of this family as the others went to the cabinet and got a plate and took a seat beside Luke and said, "Thank ya Uncle, Mr. Jesse. I was really coming out to see if you were tired of your other guest." Jesse spoke up in the young girls defense, "Now Cooter you know the more the merrier here. 'sides, if I was tired of her I'd have brought her home, but from what I'm hearing she has more than earned her keep today." They all laughed and after grace was said everyone enjoyed Jesse's fine supper. While clearing the dishes Cooter motioned for Luke to follow him. Once out the back door, Cooter said, "Hey, Lucas, how's the General Lee running?" "Why?" asked Luke. "Well, I hear that there's gonna be some good racin' a the lake tonight." Cooter said quietly. Knowing that Jesse didn't want the boys racing off the track. Luke smiled, "Well, he's running real good. Might need a quick tuning up, but I've got fifty bucks worth of part money I made driving the wrecker that says I can take anyone out there." "Well, come on son. Let's get to work. There's gonna be a band at the Boar's Nest until about 10 then everyone is going up to the lake." Cooter explained. "Sounds like fun!" Luke said. BALLADEER: "Sounds like TROUBLE to me!"

I'm a Danged Fool
Dixie sighed as she answered, "Well, I love my Mother, but I haven't gotten to be around my Dad since I was really small. Each years she has had the excuse that I was too little. Well, since my last birthday I've had a little leverage in that department. Besides, I've seen her boring world of dresses and tea parties. Yuck! It's kind of strange she takes great pride in Dad being the best mechanic in the tri-state area, yet, two minutes later she might say something about, 'that filthy garage and him being a grease monkey'. I guess I'm tried of heels and pearls and decided to try living in Daddy's world. I mean how hard is it to fix a sink or mow the yard? Besides, I like hanging out down at the garage, you get to meet everyone and I know its sounds silly to a guy from a girl but I like knowing how a car works not just add gas and turn the key." She found herself feeling a bit embarassed. Luke looked at her and saw more than just a teenaged girl setting there. "Well, being a Davenport I can see where you get the interest in how things work. Your Dad and brother have taught me a lot of what I know. If you are interested, I'll teach you to do something that drives me crazy next time I'm there." Looking up interested, "Sure, what?" "Most of the time when a car comes in we will need parts. Sometimess its just to reorder what we've used. But, other times its to get the car back in service. Well, to call several places looking for the part and the best deal can ta some time. If you were 'running down' parts I could be taking off the old one and save some time?" Luke said questioning Dixie to see if she'd be interested. She smiled shyly, "It sounds like something I could do. But how do I know what to ask for?" Luke replied, "I'll write the information down for you until you start learning more about the cars." "Cool!" she replied, "Luke do you know what happened with my Mother and Dad? I know they just split up but never divorced." Luke sighed, "Honey, I was pretty young when that all came about too. All I know is what I've heard Jesse say. It was something about your Dad working on cars for police and revenuers in the day then at night working on the moonrunners. It seems that though your Dad never ran or made any shine he has a 'soft' spot for the moonrunners around here and alway seemed to make sure they had the upper hand as far as the cars were concerned. Your Mother thought it was dishonest for him to take money from the moonshiners who made the money 'illegally'. It was something they both felt very strongly about and the only compromise they could work out was for you to stay with her and Cooter to stay with your Dad. That's about all I know." Dixie looked confused, "But Luke, that was a long time ago! They surely don't run moonshine here now." Luke looked at the most innocent face he'd ever saw. He hoped he could say what he was about to say and her not read right through him. His family and his freedom counted on him doing so. He said, "Well, now I've heard there are some people who still make and run shine around here but I don't think it's as popular as it once was." Dixie realized she had been outside for quiet sometime and Luke's lemonade was long gone. "Thanks, Luke. I guess I better finish helping Beth and Daisy or they are going to fire me!" she said getting up. Luke also stood, "Yeah, if I dont' have that fence done Jesse is sure to skin me alive! And I don't think I want that." Dixie replied over her shoulder as she headed for the house, "Me either! Sounds painful!" ~~~~~~~~~~~ At the still sight Jeb replied to Jesse, "Thanks for understanding Uncle Jesse. I will remember that. I'm sorryabout the trouble I caused the other night." Jesse sized up his middle nephew and then asked, "Jeb, what kind of trouble are we talking about?" Jeb felt lower than he had felt since he was 10 and broke a window in town with a baseball. He said, "........

"Jesse sighed, "Jeb, I have tried to teach you boys right. Now, I know that those two down there," he said pointing to the house and Bo and Luke, "have chased girls since they were 13 years old. And look what's it's gotten them. Bo's expectin' and Luke has such a reputation not a Father in three Counties will ever be happy that their little girl wants to date him. I also know that there are 'fringed' benefits at some places for delivering these loads and I know that those two have taken advantage of their fair share of them. I ain't sayin' its right. And I have discouraged it as best I can but I can't hold their hands every minute -- neither can I yours. Jeb, I wasn't a saint in my younger days anymore than those two down there and I know you're going to try things but do it with a girl you care about and she cares about you. A 'workin' girl' ain't going to teach you nothing but how to get your heart broke. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Meanwhile back at teh farm. Luke and Bo had figure to split up and get twice the work done. Bo had went out to the back forty and started repairing fences there while Luke had started closer to home. They figured they would work towards each other. See Luke wanted to stay close to make sure that Coy and Vance did their share too. The sun was getting really hot with all Luke's effort while digging wholes and setting new poles for the fence. His shirt was long gone. Beth, Dixie and Daisy had taken this time to paint the new room for the baby. Daisy said wiping the sweat from her head, "I could sure use some lemonade." Beth agreed, "Me too. I can't believe its this hot this late in the season. Remind me next time to plan a little better, I dread being really huge next May and June." Both Daisy and Dixie asked, "Next time?" Beth laughed, "Why sure! I mean this time may not have been planned, but Bo and I have a long life ahead of us and I sure don't figure to only have one child." She said wiping her head. Dixie said, "I'll go get us something to drink ya'll talk and cool off." She went out of the room and was filling glasses when she looked out and saw a bare chested Luke Duke digging a whole for a post near the end of the drive way. "Oh, man now that's a sight!" Dixie tooktwo glasses back to Daisy and Beth, "I'll be right back. Think I'll take the boys something cool, too." She said. Indeed she took Coy and Vance something to the barn where they were working on her way to the end of the drive way where Luke was drenched with sweat as he continued to work not seeing her. She asked "Thirsty?" Luke looked up seeing a large glass of lemonade with a lot of ice in it. "Ya' know, you might have just saved my life." He said not as serious as it sounded. "Come on let's find some shade." Dixie said, .............

I'm a Danged Fool
The next morning found Jesse Duke up early as usual. When Luke came out of his room into the kitchen, "Morning. Uncle Jesse." He said sleepily. Jesse replied, "Morning Luke. I know you aren't awake yet but Daisy had company last night and I need to talk business." Luke listened, "Ok." Jesse continued, "I have a big order. Actually, a couple places are wanting to start early for the holidays and get stocked up so we'll need to run several loads this month with multiple stops. Now, I need you to handle things here. I was thinking on taking Bo with me to work the still today." "Sure, I'll handle things here. No problem." Luke thought for a moment, "Uncle Jesse ya know Bo doesn't like to be too far from Beth and all. I think I can get more work out of him here than you can there. Besides, I think Jeb will be wanting to talk to you about last night." stated Luke glumly. Jesse studied Luke, "I don't suppose you'd like to tell me about it?" Luke looked Jesse in the eye, "No, Sir. I promise this is nothing that can't wait a little. It's nothing like Bo's situation. I'm not going to lie for him, but I figure he may need a little time on this before he can tell it." Jesse smiled at his nephew and said sternly. "I"m trusting you on this, son. I hope you use better judgement on this than in Bo's situation." "Yes, Sir." Luke replied heading to the coffee pot in only his jeans as Daisy and Dixie entered the kitchen. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ At the still site..............
