His Prison, Her Prison pt. 2

Recommended Posts

Daisy's heart caught in her throat when Bo's eyes slipped closed and he no longer conciously moved, only his muscles seemed to be working on a completly different concioius level, spasming as they would do if Bo was awake.

All that were gathered around the bed were thankful that the tortured screams of agony had now ceased, but they were also so very worried that now Bo could still feel the pain but was unable to exress that pain to anyone. It could get worse and he was powerless to tell anyone. It was ironic that he was just moving out of a prison only to be trapped in a worse one.

The Doc came running back into the room from his office, arriving swiftly to tell them that the ambulance would be arriving shortly for Bo and that they would have to ghet moving fast....which was going to be made difficult by the fact that someone would have to remain holding Bo's hands down or the handcuffs would continue digging into his wrists as he arms unconciously spasmed against them.

"Take the cuffs off," Michaels ordered. "I don't want him pulling open the wounds."

The guard looked at him puzzled, "But doc, regulation-"

"That's why I have a fantastic medical reason."

The guard strode over and unlocked Bo's wrists. "Okay," Michaels ordered, "We'll have to get him to the courtyard, the ambulance can't go any farther. I'll need you to help me lift him onto the gourney, and help me move him to the courtyard."

He walked over to Bo just to make sure he was stable enough to travel, he couldn't do a full body workover like he'd wanted. All he did was check the vitals, heart rate was abnormally fast, which wasn't a suprise from the pain Bo was in. Bo could breathe on his own, also good. Not a good sign that he was unconcious but that was because of the pain and not a nerological disorder.

He was gratefull for how quickly they all moved. Being sure that if the warden caught him doing this he'd be fired before he could help the boy. The warden would also be getting back from lunch soon and find the small scrap of paper Michaels had slipped under the door. Regulation required he get the Warden's approval. He got past the security guards with ease. When they finally got out to the courtyard the ambulance was awaiting them. Michaels told them what Bo's problem was and what they would do about it on the way to the hospital.

Only the girl, Daisy, and their uncle rode in the ambulance with the paramedics. There was some discussion about how they weren't really immediate family, but that was quickly abolished by Jesse. Enos walked over too him, "Hey Doc...I just wanted to thank you for doing this...are you sure you won't get in trouble or nothin'?"

"No, I won't get in trouble," He lied, then added truthfully, "And no need to thank me, it's why I became a doctor."

Enos smiled and ran out to his car, while Michaels sighed. Time to stop by his job and get fired.

Daisy and Jesse both clung to Bo's hand tightly on the way to the hospital, wincing a little as they saw at least two IV's inserted into the back of his hand now, knowing that Bo would throw a hissy fit if he were awake and found out what they had done.

What hurt them more though, was the fact to keep him still the paramedics practically had to strap down every part of his body that could move. Even though he had no neck injury, the neck brace was on and keeping him still. His arms, middle and legs were also strapped down so now the only thing that moved was his chest and his rippling muscles.

Despite the doctor saying he probably wouldn't need it, the paramedics had also started on the oxygen, holding the mask firmly over Bo's nose and mouth.

Enos followed the ambulance through the traffic at breakneck speed, sirens blaring as he followed, remembering to CB Cooter on the way to tell him they were no longer at the jail but headed for the hospital Luke was in.

Bo was trapped in a world of pain, slipping in and out of conciousness from the constant pain. He wasn't even really sleeping, just passing out and awakening from time to time.

VVVVV

Daisy looked to the paramedic, "What is that?" She asked as the blond girl slipped a third needle into Bo's arm, above the bandages.

"Morphine from what the doctor back there told us I figure he needs it."

"And that'll help him?"

"He'll feel kind of sick from the painkillers, but it shouldn't be any worse than a bad head-cold. It'll be better than what he's going through now."

Daisy nodded and grasped Bo's hand tighter. Reminding herself that, no matter how bad they were they wouldn't kill him. Besides, they were putting him on morphine, and Luke would even be able to visit Bo. She didn't think they'd let Bo visit Luke but if Luke said he wanted to visit Bo she didn't think they could stop him. There was no law against visiting you're "attacker".

It didn't take too long for the ambulance to arrive at the all to familiar hospital. Daisy and Jesse and not too soon after, Enos ran down the hall with Bo as far as they could until the doctor's that had joined the team had stopped them and promised them they would come and update them as soon as Bo was settled.

Of course, a few guards from the prison escorted Bo all the way, not being allowed to leave him alone as was their duty to make sure the prisoner remained exactly that despite the situation he was in.

with a resigned sigh, daisy jesse and enos told a nurse where they would be if they needed them and set of to Luke's room, knowing staying with him would be better than staying alone and worrying about Bo.

Luke wasn's sleeping, just closing his eyes. Thinking about Bo and what could be wrong with him. He had motioned to a nurse earlier to get a notebook and a piece of paper, she was smart and figured it out quickly enough. Since then he'd been practicing writing his statement. The first couple times it looked like total chicken scratch. Only after the 5th or so time did it actually begin to look legible. He'd always been a quick learner, or re-learner. After reading his statement, a judge would have to let Bo go.

Talking wasn't going so good, and he was too weak to stand by himself, so a judge would have to come to him

All he cared about was that Bo was set free and the horrible mistake was made right.

Just then, Daisy and Uncle Jesse came through the door. he looked at them anxiously and scribbled on his notebook: "Is he alright?"

Daisy read it and frowned, "He's in a lot of pain..." She looked stunned all through the sentence, withdrawn almost. Second later she perked up a little. "But doc Michaels arranged for a transfer to this hospital. When you're strong enough you can see him."

Luke couldn't contain his grin.

Jesse watched the grin spread across Luke's face and was also immensly pleased that although Luke couldn't speak the words, he could still make sentences in his head and communicate them by writing them down.

He was also pleased that Luke wasn't upset by the fact that Bo was in a lot of pain. Whether it was because Luke didn't actually registar that bit or whether he didn't think a lot of pain was too bad Jesse didn't know....he just hoped Luke wouldn't question further and force him to go into detai.

Seeing her cousin so happy at the prospect of seeing Bo was painful for Daisy, still habouring so much guilt and shame at what she had helped do to Bo. All this could have been avoided if she'd been acting like a proper Duke, like the big sister she was meant to be to Bo.

Luke would have never believed Bo would hurt anyone on purpose and would never have accepted the guilty verdict for his younger cousin in that situation. Luke would have fought every step of the way for Bo and proved his innocence....daisy just accepted it as face and didn't even think to try and find evidence that supported Bo's side of the story.

Luke noticed as Daisy shuffled through all the paper, how horribly quiet it had gotten. He had been used to, when he woke up, Daisy and Jesse chatting non stop without a care in the world, just happy to have him back again.

But now they were so quiet it was un nerving and started to make him worry more about his younger cousin, made him want to see him more to actually confirm they weren't lying and that he was actually in the hospital and alive...

"Bo...."

Uncle Jesse answered his nefew's question, knowing what it was, "We don't know how he is...All we know is that he's havin' cramps, bad ones in his back, stomach and legs. They gave him morphine. We can just hope it works."

Luke frowned, it was bad. They'd seen something that scared them. Or pained them. Daisy he knew was guilty because she felt it was her fault. Uncle Jesse probably had simular feelings. He hoped that was it.

Of course the oldest Duke cousin couldn't ignore the idea they were keeping something from him. That Bo was sicker than they said he was.

Jesse knew that Luke could see there was something more going on with Bo than they were letting on but he refused to worry Luke further by telling him everything else. That wasn't what Luke needed to hear and Daisy definatly didn't need to hear it again either. everytime someone brought it up, Daisy seemed to get that little more distant, less focused and more diving into herself.

Daisy listened as Jesse explained and just nodded along with what was being said, taking Luke's hand, needing to feel the reassuring comfort of his grip on her, something she had missed and needed for the past four years....she needed it so badly now. she couldn't get the usual comfort from Luke advice and words of knowledge because he couldn't say anything so this was going to have to be the best she could get.

Luke didn't pull away as Daisy grabbed his hand, a distant look in her eyes. He couldn't believe how his family had deteriorated. It didn't used to be this way. To him it felt like just yesterday but to her...to her it must have felt like an eternity since they were truly happy.

It didn't take a brillient man to know what she needed. She needed comfort, she needed love. Just to let her know that even though she made a mistake they would still love her. He obliged and reached his other hand over to wipe her brown locks behind her ear then gently stroked her cheek. He knew what she was afraid of deep down, he reached his hand down to his pen and wrote on his notebook simple words she would need to hear:

'Bo will still love you.'

Daisy softly nuzzled into Luke's soothing touches that she had missed for so long. When he softly handed her the note though, she couldn't contain it anymore. She put her hand to her mouth and sobbed chokingly, moving forward to lay her head on the bed next to Luke, folding her arms underneath her head.

She didn't know how anyone could love her after what she had done. She was the one who had convinced Uncle Jesse that Bo had to have been guilty, even though he didn't really believe Bo was so. She had pushed and pushed and put her Uncle through so much emotional pain only to discover that she had been wrong all the time, cause her uncle to lose faith in Bo and to go against what the bible had said to him all the years that they had lived with him.

Jesse watched as Daisy broke down and softly leant over to rub the top of her head as soothingly as she could. He knew why she was feeling so guilty.

"Daisy...you didn't push me inta believing anything...this was an old man's mistake...."

When Bo awoke the lights hurt his eyes, he was nausious but it wasn't too bad, and he had a headache that made hangovers jealous. But the pain from the cramps was dull compared to what it was only a half hour ago. Enos was sitting on a chair at his bedside, leaning back and sleeping.

Oh no...had his family's presense there just been a dream?

"Enos?" He said gently, he was sure it came out sounding quite slurred, "Enos?"

"Huh? What about cats havin' puppies!?" The deputy shouted as he jerked awake from an obviously abnormal dream. "Oh, hi Bo." He grinned that big goofy grin he always had, then frowned, "Are the painkillers workin'?"

"Much better than it was before...Enos, was it a dream?" Bo asked sadly.

"Was what a dream?"

"My family? Bein' here?"

Enos smiled wider if that was even possible, "No! No dream, they came after Luke woke up and uh..." Enos searched for the right words, "Communicated to them that what you did was an accident."

Bo blinked a little bit, the nausea starting to grow a little bit. However, his mind may have been a little fuzzy from the painkillers but the fact that Enos didn't say told them or said to them didn't get past him.

"What d'ya mean...communicated?"

Enos shifted uncomofrtably, he hadn't meant to get Bo worked up.

"Uh....Bo I can't...I ain't allowed ta tell ya what's goin' on with Luke....ya's have ta wait until they all get here ta see ya....regulations..."

This was actually one time he was glad for the regulations that were placed upon him as one of Bo's guards, voulentary of course. The horrible thing was that now Bo's wrists had been stitched and bandages wrapped once more tightly around them....the fact he was in a public place meant that once more....the cuffs has been snapped back on...

Bo sighed and closed his eyes, counting slowly to 10 to try and halt the flow of nausea that was rising...and he wasn't entirly sure it was because if his illness either....he hadn't even considered the fact that he had hit Luke hard on his head....hadn't considered the fact that there could be brain damage....

The doctor working in the coma ward, Doc Walker, was a young female that had just finished her residency. She and Daisy had stricken up a friendship over the four years Daisy had been coming in to see Luke. "Obviously there was some brain damage. But to tell you the truth it's far better than I expected...honestly I never thought he'd wake up. Much less be in as good a shape as he is."

"He can't talk," Daisy interupted.

Walker glanced her way and continued, striding over to the light in the room. "Take a look at this," She held up an exray to the light. "That was Luke's head injury."

Luke had had no idea it was that bad...it was a miracle he'd survived it seemed. Quickly sketching on a piece of paper in a semi-legible manner, 'Are those white things on the extray pieces of my skull in my brain?'

Doc Walker nodded, "Yes I'm afraid so. You may not be able to talk just yet but you can say things correct?"

Luke nodded, "Bo..."

She smiled, "That's good...I'll get you scheduled for speech and arobic therapy."

"When will he be well enough to go somewhere in the hospital in a wheelchair?" Uncle Jesse asked.

"I'd like to run just a couple more tests. We should get the results within the hour and if everything checks out I think it's a good idea to get him moveing around as quickly as possible."

Luke looked a little happier at the prospect of being able to see Bo soon....it didnt really feel like it had been 4 years since he had seen him, he only really felt like he had just woken up from a short nap, but just a few minutes away from Bo was enough to make him feel lonely...even if he did have Daisy and jesse.

He was a little disturbed at the fact that his skull seemed to be in fragments in his brain, but he felt fine so he didnt see why they should be a problem to him just now. he had survived a war where he had seen far worse injuries than this, so this was really nothing to him.

Daisy however, took it a little worse although she composed herself very well. The grip on Luke's hand tightened considerably though which told Luke exactly what she was feeling. Jesse too looked a little pale.

Luke knew it would take all kinds of work to get his family back together. And it might take a long time to heal those wounds. All he could be was grateful that he hadn't died. For all he knew that if his head wasn't as thick as it was Bo wouldn't just be doing 15 years for attempted murder, he'd be on death row. As it was he couldn't imagine the pain his family had gone through, it would have been horrible if they'd lost both him and Bo.

Whatever...he knew what he had to do. He had to do whatever he could to heal his family. With god as his witness he'd make this better...

Back in Bo's room, the young man was finding it increasingly more difficult to hold back the nausea that was raging as Enos spoke softly to him. Eventually though, even Enos could see his struggle and quickly rose to nab a plastic tray and hold it as Bo lurched forward and threw what little contents he had in his stomch up into the tray, his stomach clenching painfully as he did.

Enos leant over and bashed the Call Nurse button situated beside Bo's bed, He was thankful his friend wasn't in pain anymore and that Luke and the family weren't there to see Bo like thsi...the doc has said back in the jail to be sure to tell him if Bo threw up....did this apply here?

He didn't care, all he knew is that was what he had been told and that was what he intended to do...

Enos sprinted out to the phone as the nurse came in the room. He dialed the prison number, then asked for the medical extention.

The Duke family sat in silence for some time while they waited for Doc Walker to come back with the test results. Or for somebody to come in with any news on Bo.

Suddenly, sombody stepped through the door, "Why didn't nobody tell me he woke up?" Cooter Davenport's grinning face met them. "How're ya feelin' buddyroe?"

Luke nodded and smiled. Cooter took that as something was wrong. So he asked Uncle Jesse, "He alright?"

The old man smiled, "Well...He can't talk much, but the doc says he's in otherwise perfect shape for sombody who's been passed out for four years."

Cooter strode over to Luke and placed a hand on his shoulder. Luke warmly responded to the contact by putting his own hand on Cooter's.

Cooter grinned and winked down at Luke.

"Ain't nothin' that can keep ya down fer too long ain't there?"

Luke chuckled and shook his head, thankful for Cooter's much needed humour at the moment. Everyone was so tense, which wasn't something he was used to from his family.

Cooter stood in silence for a moment before saying to Luke again.

"Tell ya what buddy roe, its been mighty quiet and I's been pressed for buisness without you and Bo tearin' round in General Lee....I's been keepin' him tuned fer ta....when ya can drive again..."

Luke nodded, the smile fading from his face a little. At the moment he didn't know if he could ever drive again, heck he couldn't even walk yet and he still might not be able to, and there was no doubt that Bo probably wouldn't be driving him for some time to come either. Even with a statement from Luke saying what had happened, it would still take a long time for it to be processed, then put through the courts and the legal proceedings....Bo wouldn't be able to stay in the hospital for very long...eventually he would have to go back to the prison...the very thought of that made Luke feel sick to his stomach.

Because he hadn't been careful enough to think that Bo maybe startled if he entered the room, tied up or no, he had gotten hurt because Bo was defending himself and now Bo was paying for his mistake.

However, he didn't spend long dwelling on the subject, he had done that enough recently. Instead he turned his attention back to Cooter who was now telling tales of Rosco and Boss' exploits in Hazzard without the Dukes there to stop the plans. The bank had been 'robbed' 5 times over the years and Boss collected the insurance for it all, things of Boss' were going randomly missing and people's farm's being bought out from under them.

People had begun to say that Hazzard just wasn't safe with the law around, they needed the Duke boys back because they were more of a sherriff's department on their own than the one Hazzard currently had.

The nurse held the bucket close to Bo's face as he wretched again and again. There was no food in it...just acid...

But suddenly with the acid came up something that gave her alarm. The young man was also alarmed and a little afraid at the sight he saw.

She left she had to get a doctor, as she passed the deputy out in the hall he put an arm on her shoulder to stop her, "What is it?" He asked.

"He's spitting up blood."

Enos swallowed and closed his eyes briefly before running back to Bo's room, seeing the young man sobbing gently, unable to hide his face because his wrists were still cuffed to the bed. Enos crossed over and wrapped his arms round his friend's shoulders, gently rocking him.

"S'gonna be alright Bo....s'gonna be alright..."

Bo shook his head but made no move to speak, too upset and unsure of himself to allow that. Enos though knew what he needed.

"I'll go get yer family Bo...don't you worry aint nothin' gonna happen....I'll be back as soon as I can."

With that, Enos swiftly ran out the room and down the corridors, getting to Luke's room in record time and skidding through the doors panting.

"Go...see...Bo...needs....you....now..."

Luke wrote on his notebook as fast as possible, alarmed by Enos' reaction, 'What's wrong?'

"I don't know," Enos panted, "But he's caughin' up blood."

Alarm surged through Luke and he tried to rise. Bo needed him now more than ever.

"Luke," Uncle Jesse ordered, "Yer stayin' here till the doctor gets back, it shouldn't be long. Daisy, you stay here to make sure he don't move."

Cooter was already gone with Enos by the time Uncle Jesse finished. Luke knew Daisy was worried for Bo, but still grateful not to have to see him. Being her older cousin, he got the idea it wasn't that she didn't care, it was just that she probably couldn't face the idea of Bo coughing up blood because she still thought it was her fault.

She squeezed his hand, "...He's under a lot of stress...I'm sure it's just an ulcer or something...people get those all the time."

Luke wasn't so sure, and she probably didn't even believe it herself.

By the time the trio managed to reach Bo's room, the young man was nothing but a sobbing, trembling wreck. He was so deeply terrified by what was happening and the fact that no one else seemed to be able to tell him either didn't help matters at all.

Bo wanted nothing more than to feel the love from his older cousin that he didn't deserve. He wanted Luke's arms wrapped around him, wanted to hear Luke's voice whisper soft words into his hair and reassure him everything would be okay. It didnt matter what anyone else said, as lonmg as Luke said it that was what mattered.

Jesse was straight to Bo's side and had his arms wrapped round his youngest in an instant, cursing the cuffs that held Bo's arms down like a common criminal. This wasn't right, and Jesse hated the fact that he himself had abandoned Bo to this kind of treatment without a seconds hesitation.

He rocked the young man gently in his arms, whispering as soothingly as he could through his own slight fear.
