His Prison, Her Prison

The Doctor smiled gently and reached over to shake Enos' hand.

"Good Afternoon Deputy, I'm Doc Micheals....are you a relation to Beaureguard Duke?"

Enos sighed and shook his head

"No....I'm a family friend....I need to know how he is so I can take the news back to them though....see if they'll come see him."

The Doctor nodded and frowned, looking down at the notes he had written before looking back to Enos.

"Well....Beaureguard is in an almost critical condition. We've put him on an IV to combat dehydration and we'll try getting him to eat something soon enough when he's rested up a little more. He also has a rising fever....we think he may have over worked himself as he is also suffering from exhaustion, and it appears lack of sleep. He is a very sick yong man at the moment Deputy....and he keeps calling out for someone named....uh Luke and Uncle Jesse and occasionally Daisy...."

"There his family..."

"It might be a good idea to get them to come in then, because he isn't co operating well enough for us to help him properly. We've had to put him under sedation to keep him quiet so as not to disturb the other prisoners."

Enos uncomfortably scratched his head, "Well...uh. That might be a bit of a problem...when he came here it pert near broke their hearts. Is he gonna be alright?"

The doctor sighed and took off his glasses thoughtfully, "He should be alright. These are some of the most common sicknesses we see here. Too tell you the truth the food is horrible, it's not uncommon to see someone skip a meal when it's something they don't like. Guys go outside to excercize and work themselves too hard. Sometimes just to escape from where they are. They lose a great deal of water in the process although they may not realize it." Michaels opened his mouth as though he wanted to say something more, but his face turned thoughtful.

"What is it?" Enos asked, he'd been reasured by what the doctor had told him but suddenly that same old fear came back to him.

"He's delirious...I'm only a little worried about his metal state. Especially by that he's been having trouble sleeping. Attributing to most of his troubles...May I ask what brought him here?"

Enos sighed, he hated this. He felt like a one man army against a whole bunch fo problems that were trying to stop him, "...He was accused of attempted murder of his cousin. Might as well of been brothers though. But between you and me it was an accident I know it. After he was convicted his family turned their backs on him...nobody I know has spoke to him for going on four years. I don't think he even knew his cousin was still alive until just a couple minutes ago."

"That explains alot. Hopefully that took a lot of pressure off his mind. That makes me feel a little better about it." He turned to walk back through the door but stopped, "Deputy, I think it would do him a great deal of good to see his family now...Prison is a horrible place, and not many who come to this wing have the comfort of knowing there are people who care if they live."

Enso closed his eyes and nodded, looking to the floor as he scrubbed a hand down his face. All he could do was try and tell Jesse and Daisy about Bo....but he was determined that Bo would not go through this alone anymore. HIs reaction alone to what had really happened that night and only strengthened Enos' resolve to prove his friend was innocent.

"Doc....let me know how Bo is...keep me regularly updated...here's my CB channel and my telephone number...."

With that he handed the Doc a piece of paper with the information on it and headed out the doors of the prison...driving as quickly as he could back to the Duke Farm to deliever the news....

Enos drove through the heavy Atlanta traffic with the siren on. As far as he was concerned it was an emergency. Still, only when he got to the backroads of Hazzard did he make really good time. He couldn't wait to get back. The only time he slowed down was when he knew he was coming up on one of Rosco's favorite speed traps. Though Enos didn't think he had to worry Rosco wouldn't go out of his way to catch him like he would most other people.

It was about an hours' drive from Atlanta to the Duke farm. Enos cut that in half. All the while thinking about what he was gonna say to Uncle Jesse and Daisy. The exact wording was important. He wondered if they even regretted their decition in abandoning Bo...Lord...this whole situation was messed up in the big time.

Familiar chills rushed down his spine as he parked his patrol car. From his view of the window he could tell Uncle Jesse and Daisy were sitting down to dinner. Words were exchanged; and only once did Daisy say something that made them both smile, only faintly, but at least it was a smile. Walking up and pausing nervously at the door he prepared what he was gonig to do. Taking a deep breath he knocked once and entered the Duke household.

Daisy and Jesse both looked up as Enos entered, seeing the nervous look on his face and also the worry and fear in his eyes Daisy immidiatly rose from her seat and wrapped a gentle arm around his shoulder, guiding him gently over to the couch, Jesse not following too far behind her. She sat him down and each person sat on either side of the deptuy

"Enos, are you alright? What happened?"

Enos nodded gently and ran a hand down his face.

"Yeah i'm fine it's....Daisy....Jesse i need to tell you something and I need you to promise not to talk until I'm done....please hear me out....its real important..."

Daisy nodded and saw jesse do the same, waiting for Enos to start his explanation

Enos swallowed nervously, this was it. "Alright...I...I went to Georgia State Penetentary. To see Bo..."

Daisy rose from her chair, a fire in her eyes, "You what?"

"Oh now Daisy, ya'll promised not to talk till I was finished..."

Uncle Jesse put a hand on her shoulder, "Let him speak..."

"...Well I went there to talk to him...I asked him for his side of the story. I just needed to do it in person. He broke down. I don't know how long he's been holding in what he was but he told me what happened...He collapsed...and had to be taken to the hospital wing. The doc said that he's sufferin' from exaustion, and dehydration..."

Uncle Jesse nodded once, as though this was no big news, "It sounds like something the doctor can handle."

"But Uncle Jesse, Daisy, it's worse than just that...he's calling out for all of you...Doc says it'll do him good to know somebody cares if he dies..."

Daisy sat silently, shrugging her shoulders.

"well after what he did to Luke do we?"

Enos sighed and scrubbed his hands over his face.

"Daisy...Jesse I believe him....what he told me sounds so much like the truth....if only you could have heard him....could have seen the look in his eyes.....he's so ill Jesse, Daisy. What happened Jesse to the good book you always swore by? If you went to the preacher I bet he's tell you some really good quote from there that would show you exactly what I'm sayin'. I'm sorry y'all but I'm goin' back to Bo....he needs someone and I'm gonna be danged if I let him stay on his own."

He rose from his seat, the compassion for his friend that lay alone with no one to support him in a place so terrible, no matter what his other friends thought of him. he knew Bo was innocent and he only ever believed in things he knew for certain....and Daisy knew this better than anyone....

He began to walk out the door but stopped and looked back at them, "How? You raised him, Jesse, when his parents died. And Daisy, you with them...how can you two just turn your backs on him."

Jesse spoke, "What he did...it's unforgivable. He broke the bonds of this family...he don't deserve to be a part of it no more."

"But how can you be so sure?"

"There ain't no way J.D. could have planted the evidence against him."

"Because he did it to Luke but he didn't mean to."

Daisy interupted, "Enos...you're real sweet...but you're also gullible..."

Suddenly, he understood. He understood why they were so unwilling to believe Bo innocent. Because they'd left him alone so long, they'd stormed out of the courtroom and left him to stand by himself. After all they'd done to him, they couldn't face the idea that they'd been wrong in leaving him. So they'd forced themselves to believe it. "Well...I'm sorry ya'll feel that way..."

Striding back to his squad car in frustration and anger he slammed the door and turned the ignition back on. He couldn't believe what he was hearing. Anyway, Enos knew he had to get back to Bo. He'd had to stand alone for far too long.

VVVVV

After Enos had left Daisy looked over at Uncle Jesse. "Uncle Jesse...I don't know what's got into him lately. He's all stuck on the idea that Bo's innocent."

Uncle Jesse looked up, deeply troubled, "But what if Bo is innocent...how could we ever face him again?"

The slight doubt that always plauged her took off; what if he didn't mean to? Now Bo was sick...She'd never really thought about it before but Bo could die. He could die before they ever had the chance to say they were sorry.

Only if he was innocent though. Was he?

Enos sped as fast as he could back to the jail, storming through the hospital corridors and down to where he's last left Bo, grabbing a doctor.

"I want to see Bo...reguard Duke, how is he?"

^^^^

Luke hadn't been able to tell them all what had happened that night, Bo hadn't been allowed anywhere near him.....Jesse had always thought since this all happened that...maybe Luke was trying to show something by staying firmly out of conciesness....could it be that he was waiting for them to realise Bo's innocence and bring Bo to him?

"How is he?" Enos asked the doctor.

"He's woken up. He's responding to commands, but he's basically out of it. Not talking, will only look your direction when you speak to him."

Enos nodded and walked into the office. He found Bo. The blond man was handcuffed to either side of the bed. Procedure, Enos supposed but to him it was just sadistic and unessesary. Bo wasn't going anywhere. Enos was crushed to see Bo's sparkling eyes dead inside. Like he had nothing to wake up for but he had anyway. "Bo?" Enos said softly. Immediatly there was a slight change in Bo's demeanor. A simular light came back to his eyes, they were dull, but still there.

"Enos? You came back?"

"No...I couldn't rightly leave you alone like that for another four years...You've been so strong already. I wouldn't have lasted so long."

Bo smiled slightly, so very grateful to Enos although he so desperatly wanted his family....especially Luke....or Jesse. He pulled at his right hand to try and reach Enos' but sobbed slightly as he saw properly for the first time that they were handcuffed to the bed, remidning him sharply of his present situation and why it was that his familt hated him so badly.

Bo stared at the handcuffs in distain, "So...do they really hate me?" he asked the other question that had managed to plauge him every day.

"They don't hate you Bo...I just think it's easier for them to deal with what they reckon you did if they stop caring."

Bo tried to swallow the rising lump in his throat, "So they just stopped caring like that?" He snapped his fingers, "Just so they could ease their own pain. It was that easy for them?"

Enos squirmed, he looked uncomfortable, "No, Bo. It ain't like that at all...They're afraid to find out they were wrong."

Bo swallowed and sunk his head back into the pillow.

"God Enos I want Luke....I need Luke I miss him so much....I can't cope without him, all I've had is a picture of him and the family to last me four years Enos....four years without their words or their love....it just ain't worth gettin' out of here, knowin' they hate me so bad...."

Enos swallowed his own tears back and reached over gently to take Bo's hand and squeezed it.

"Bo...when ya get out of here yer more than welcome ta stay with me. I know ya did nothin' and I'm sure there are others that won't believe it....I dont think Cooter believes it neither....I won't abandon ya Bo....an I will find a way to prove yer innocent I promise...."

"Bo..." Enos asked something that suddenly came to his mind, "I gotta ask this. Is there anything at all you can think of that might prove it was an accident and not attempted murder?"

Bo closed his eyes and tried to think hard. "Yeah...maybe you can find something at that ol' warehouse that might back up my side of the story. They never found the bag they put over my head...But it ain't no use, I'd still need Luke's testimony to get out."

"Yeah...but if I find something to back up your story we might be able to convince Daisy and Jesse that you didn't mean nothin'."

Bo squeezed Enos's hand, "Just uh...don't leave my right now alright? I've been so long without someone to really talk to..."

"Sure thing Bo...anything I can get you?"

Bo thought, "Yeah...if you could get me that picture of my family from my cell...it's hid between my matress and the frame...and uh...there's a book in the library I've been readin'."

Enos nodded

"I have to leave you to get those though...."

"'Kay....just....please hurry back...."

Enos gave his word and then hurried off quickly, getting the guards to let him through and take him to Bo's cell where he was asked questions by some of the other inmates who had taken a liking to Bo, asking if he was alright and what was happening. He didn't answer any questions, assuming the guards would tell them if they needed to know and quickly retreived the picture, smiling at it gently before running to the library and asking the librarian there for the book that Bo was currently reading.

Enos was suprised to say the least. The science fiction book was about 2 inches thick. Bo had never been much of a reader back in Hazzard, but from what the Librarian told him Bo was there every day. The picture was a nice, small black and white. In it Bo had one arm around Luke's neck, Daisy had the other around Luke's waist and Jesse was right next to them. They all looked so happy.

Where on earth did those days go?

Bo brightened up again the second Enos came back, "Here you go Bo."

"Thanks...So has much really changed in Hazzard?"

"Not much...Lots of people are confused about what happened that night...Oh yeah! Doc Petticord became a granddad."

"That's sweet. How's Cooter?"

"Well...he's been hurtin for buisness a little. Since General ain't been given' us nothing to chase anymore we haven't been wreckin' our squad cars so much. But he's makin' it."

Bo licked his lips, "...So how bad is Luke?"

"He ain't brain dead...Which is good news. But the doc says that if he hasn't woke up by now chances are he won't."

"I miss him Enos...I miss them all."

Enos sighed, "Yeah Bo, me too."

Bo sighed and rested more against the pillows....every day he had prayed at least 3 times for Luke to be alright....every day he had waited for news of his cousin and now that it had been given to him it just seemed all his praying was worthless....

Enos watched the light from Bo's eyes disappear again and sighed, resting his head in his hands. This was harder than he thought, seeing Bo so down, so utterly unlike himself and so very ill. He could tell Bo still had a fever because he was sweating something fierce, but Bo never made any signal he even noticed....

Bo was asleep again, but Enos didn't leave the room. He felt so helpless...The best thing he could do for Bo right then was to find something to back up his story. Something the detectives didn't.

If he was Boss Hogg, what was the first thing he'd do? Well, assuming the bad guys had kidnapped Bo to kill him then Boss hadn't had anything to do with that. Luke comes in like the cavarly and Bo hits Luke. The first thing Boss wold have Rosco do after that would be to get rid of the evidence to back up Bo's story. Sheriff Rosco was afraid of fire, so Enos would bet good money he buried it instead of burned it. Of course it had been four years...the chances of finding where he buried it were next to nothing. There were a thousand places in Hazzard where he could have.

Enos could try to shake information out of Rosco. Rosco was a good person deep down, if he was lucky he could talk it out of his Boss. He'd have to do it when Boss wasn't around, Rosco wouldn't talk if Boss was near. But he might it he wasn't...Every Wendsday Boss came into work about an hour late because he had a long breakfest at home with Lulu. Enos would have that hour to talk to Rosco. In the mean time he would go back to the warehouse where everything happened and see if he could find a needle in haystack with luck alone.

But for now he'd stay by Bo's side until he knew for sure the young man would make a recovery. He was beginning to worry, Bo's fever kept rising...next time Doc Michaels came in he'd have to ask about it.

Using a paper towl despencer he found by the sink Enos drenched on length of it in water and left the other dry. Using the soaked towel he wiped Bo's face, neck and even the small bit of his chest before the blue prison jumpsuit. Then he repeated the process with the dry towel.

Bo moaned softly in his sleep as Enos gently sponged his head and a little of his chest down. It felt good for a minute but then his skin felt like fire again just a few seconds later. He felt so ill and he was grateful that Enos was there to help him....but he so desperatly wanted his family.

In his sleep he could see them, they were there waiting for him as he arrived back home, each of them with their arms outstretched to accept him back, to keep him safe...but he couldn't move his arms, they were kept locked to his sides. He cried out as the three family members then turned angry and turned away from him, walking away...

In reality, Bo's wrists pulled sharply against the handcuffs attatched to his wrists keeping him locked down, digging them into his wrists a little and the soft cry didn't go unoticed by Enos to bit his lip to keep from crying as his family members names were called out heart brokenly

"Hey!" Enos called to a guard, "Get the doc! He's gettin' worse...and take these cuffs off."

The guard shuffled his feet, "Can't do that Deputy it's against regulation."

"Then if he runs I'll take full responsibility. Just get them off."

"It's regulation."

"It's sadistic and unessesary."

"Sorry deputy...I'll get the doc though."

Enos frowned, he wasn't really one to call someone dumb. But he was smart enough to know when a rule was stupid. But deep down he knew that he couldn't blame the guard. The man didn't want to lose his job and the rules were there to keep posibly violent prisoners from escaping or hurting staff. They couldn't make exceptions for one prisoner.

Michaels came back in, "I'm sorry, there's a man who broke his back in the other wing. I can't move him...I find myself running back and forth." He gave a half-hearted smile, "What's wrong?"

"Fever's gettin' worse."

Michaels frowned as Bo cried out again in his sleep and faught harder against his bindings. "...At first I thought it was just malnutrition and overworking...but I'm starting to worry about bacterial infection. Colera follows conditions you'd usually find in a prison...But I'm careful about things like that. Could you stay with him why I go and swab his cell? If it is colera we'll have an epidemic on our hands. I'll start him on antibiotics and see if that helps anything." He walked over to a cubbard at the far end, "Anything on his family?"

"I...I'm afraid they ain't comin'."

The doctor sighed, "That's too bad...I've seen some prisoners get sick...give up...just die."

An icy claw gripped Enos's heart as he glanced at Bo. Could that happen to his friend? "Why?"

"They give up for different reasons. Some can't stand prison life anymore but don't commit suicide because of religious reasons. Others just don't have anybody...I think the latter is more your friend's case."

Another, louder moan came from Bo, Enos strode back over, "I'm here Bo...I'm here. Just hold on..."

Bo suddenly went very still, his breathing heavy and his body rigid. His breathing quickened as the time he spent in that state increased. Enos tried desperatly to get through to Bo, speaking softly but realising it was no use, Bo couldn't hear him.

Suddenly he let lose a blood curdling scream of his oldest cousin's name, and pulled his hands so sharply upwards from the side of the bed that the metal of the cuffs dug into his skin, breaking through the soft flesh and causing scarlet liquid to drip from the new wounds.

Enos gasped and pinned Bo's hands firmly to the bed, hoping to stop him from hurting himself further.

"Bo! C'mon buddy you have got to snap out of this....yer hurting yerself Bo....c;mon..."

If Enos had ever felt helpless, it was then. Bo kept getting paler and the fever kept getting worse. Suddenly, Dr. Michaels came back through the door, "I was right, it's cholera."

"...Possum on a Gumbush...can you treat it?"

"We need to replenish his fluids." He strode over the IV and switched the bags. Then walked back over to his various cubbords and shelves. Finding a prepackaged pack of something, looked like a sugar pakage only bigger. Michaels used distilled water from his fridge and poured the contents of the bag into a cup.

Enos asked one of the questions on his mind, "Why do you use the distilled water from the fridge?"

Where he normally would have gotten a snide remark from Boss or Rosco, Michaels gave him an honest answer, "Because if the water sourse is contaminated." He picked up the cup and checked the IV again. He handed the cup to Enos, "You need to make sure he drinks as much of that as possible. When you're out get more of the water from the fridge." He pulled as many pakages of the mixture out of the cubbords as possible; checking each fo them carefully to make sure it was right. "Empty the pakages into the cup. It's a very simple precedure. And if he starts vomiting call me at this extention." He scribbled a number down on a napkin."

"Wait doc, where you goin'?"

"If it's Cholera, which I'm very sure it is, I have to do everything I can to keep it from spreading. You can handle this deputy right?"

"Yessir, I can."

The doctor smiled, "Good man." He patted Enos once on the shoulder and jogged off down the halls.

"Luke..." Bo groaned again. "Luke!" He cried and his breathing intensified. As his friend went into another fit Enos was caught by a sliver of doubt. How could he do this? He was just some dipstick deputy from Hazzard?

If there was ever a time he wished Bo's family was around it was now more than ever. Jesse would know how to handle this and most proberly Daisy too, but him....how could he try and help his best friend when he was so filled with fear?

With a deep breath he tried to calm his nerves and think back to the small amount of medical training he had recieved in the LAPD. It was only basic stuff but he could at least use some of it. His friend needed him now, and that was all that it took to get him thinking straight.

Enos set the cup on the table and let over the railings of the bed, tapping Bo's cheek firmly and saying loudly and firmly into Bo's ear.

"Bo! Wake Up! C'mon Bo!"

Bo groaned and whimpered again, turning his head away as his wrists fell limply back to the bed. He still mumbled his cousin's name and Enos knew he had to get Bo fully awake before another attack overtook him.

"Bo listen to me buddy. I need ya to wake up....I need ya to open them eyes and talk to me...."

After a few tense moments, Bo finally fluttered his eyes open and looked over to Enos, a sad dead look in his eyes that was mixed with pain and fear of what was happening.

"Enos....where's Luke....where's Luke?"

Enos's heart did a flip flop as Bo repeated the question, knowing that Bo's conciousness was not full, he was stil somewhat ensnared by the dream. With a shake of his head, he hated lying, he gently slipped his hand underneath Bo's neck and held his head up as he pressed the cup to Bo's lips.

"He's....just gone to....uh....get the doctor's to come take a look at you.....he'll be back real soon....he said ya had to drink this though....he wanted me ta help ya..."

Before Bo could say another word, he gently tipped a little of the liquid into Bo's mouth, gently massaging his throat with his thumb to encourage him to swallow. He was at least a little relieved to find that Bo's was drinking it without question and without hesitation and Enos couldn't be sure that it wasn't because he had told Bo that Luke had told him to do so....

As Bo finished the water and Enos gently eased his head back to the pillows to get another cup, he gasped slightly as he saw the small red pools underneath Bo's wrists, realising that the Doc nor him had noticed that the handcuffs had dug into the young man's wrists. With a yelp he called to one of the guards again.

"You! Get these cuffs off now I need to get to these wounds and stop 'em bleeding or he's gonna bleed ta death!"

The guard fumbled for words, if Enos had cared to notice, he'd scared the man good, "But...Regulation-"

"Forget Regulation!" Enos snapped with suprising anger. How hard was it too get, a man was going to die unless he did something.

"...Alright...Full responsibility?"

"Right just do it." Enos already had a wrap of guaze in one hand ready to patch up his friend as best he could.

"Did they cut too deep?" Enos asked.

"How am I supposed to know?"

The young deputy suddenly felt like he had to do everything himself. He dashed back over with the bandages and checked out Bo's right wrist. It was bleeding so much but Enos remembered something about how even small cuts bleed lots. He just hoped they hadn't gone too deep. He bandaged one wrist tightly and then the other. Maybe now that Bo wasn't bound anymore he'd settle down. Mixing another cup of solution he gave it to Bo. He just kept doing it every now and then having to stop to shake Bo back to semi-conciousness.

Bo yelped and cried out as Enos wrapped the bandages tightly, but didn't even registar that his hands had been freed such was the pain in them and the fact he was too weak to move his arms more than s few inches off the bed at any rate.

Enos continued to help Bo drink the solution, pleased as he got him to finish the second cup and moving over to fetch a third when Bo's voice broke through again.

"Enos....when's Luke comin'....and Jesse and Daisy.....they're comin' ain't they...."

Enos swallowed slightly and crossed back to Bo, once more helping him to slowly drink the solution.

"Uh...well visitin' hours are over fer them Bo....I'm allowed ta stay 'cause I'm a law officer....but I'm stayin' because I'm yer friend and I ain't gonna let ya go through this with no one here..."

Bo couldn't say anything as his throat only seemed to want to respong to Enos' gentle coaxing for it to swallow the foul solution that was being tipped into his throat. He nodded slightly though and found himself jerked awake again as Enos had to shake him to keep him awake. He didn't know how much of this stuff he had to drink but if he had much more he felt like he would throw up.
