Plot Summary

Hughie's fire truck

Hughie Hogg's back in Hazzard once again, and this time he's brought a fire engine to donate to the county. After goading the Dukes into joining the Volunteer Fire Brigade, Boss sets up a fake fire, which gives Rosco a chance to plant 'shine at the Duke Farm.

Meanwhile at the Boar's Nest, Boss receives a visit from an IRS man who claims he'll be back at 9:00 in the morning to carry out a full audit on Boss' properties. Boss decides that the best course of action is to temporarily put all of his assets in someone else's name. He briefly considers Jesse, but then figures that blood is thicker than water, and picks Hughie. Wanting to find out Hughie's bigger plan, Bo and Luke follow his car, and see him talking to the IRS man (although they don't know about that visit). Just as they're about to go and find out more, one of Hughie's minions arrests them for the moonshine possession.

When Boss visits the Boar's Nest, he finds all of the furniture from his office outside. Inside, Hughie has taken over the office and redecorated. He's even fitted steel doors. Hughie admits that he couldn't resist coming back to Hazzard, framing the Dukes and cheating Boss out of his properties. Even though Boss is going to be evicted from his own house, he's still proud of Hughie for being so devious. After realizing that he has no friends to help him out, Boss has to rely on his enemies, namely the Dukes.

Boss' attempt to bail out Bo and Luke fails because his account now belongs to Hughie, so he's heads off to the Duke Farm with Lulu's skinny sister, Hortense. From their jail cell window, Bo and Luke see that Hughie is busy turning Hazzard into "Hughie Town". They're soon joined in jail by Rosco, who complained about Hughie selling his patrol car. This gives the boys a chance to escape, and they take Rosco with them. Regrouping at the Duke Farm, Luke comes up with at plan to have Daisy decoy Hughie while the others break into the Boar's Nest to retrieve Boss' safe which contains the letter signing over his property.

Commentary

Trivia

Mid-air crash
  • Jeff Altman returned as Hughie Hogg in another three episodes after this one, and was accompanied in each by his sidekicks Roger Torrey (Wayne) and Pat Studstill (Floyd). However, while the same actors were used, their names changed to Norris and Barclay.
  • This episode contains the famous mid-air patrol car crash.
  • Daisy starts the episode exercising a horse for Mary Belle. This is probably a reference to her friend Mary Belle Digby, whose wedding she attended in Uncle Boss, coincidentally the previous Hughie Hogg episode.
  • The "brand-spanking-new used fire truck" is actually a circa 1950 Seagrave.
  • In the stunt where the General doesn't quite clear the pond, Bo's line "Dang, we got the tail end wet." was added to the dialogue.
  • Roger Torrey (Wayne) was the original choice for Jethro Bodine in The Beverly Hillbillies before Max Baer Jr. got the part.
  • Frances Bay (Aunt Hortense) played Adam Sandler's grandma in Happy Gilmore.

Bloopers

  • The section of the Boar's Nest roof cut out by Luke was already marked out before he and Bo were lifted up there.
  • The shot of the oil drums being lifted off Bo, Luke and Rosco was obviously filmed at night, although the rest of the scene takes place during the day.
