Season 5 is probably best remembered as the season where Bo and Luke were replaced for 18 episodes. With the show still doing well in the ratings, Tom Wopat and John Schneider realized that they weren't getting their agreed cut of the merchandising royalties, and protested by not reporting to the set when filming started. The producers decided to introduce two new cousins, Coy and Vance, to replace them. The public was expected to accept these Bo and Luke clones, but ratings fell dramatically, and Tom and John's contracts were renegotiated. They returned for the last four episodes.

Season 5 coincided with the start of The Dukes Animated Series.
