Most regard the first season as one of the best. The scripts were more original and didn’t suffer from the rut into which many of the later episodes seemed to fall. Many fans prefer the look and feel of the first several episodes, which were filmed mainly in Covington, GA. The locations seen in episodes such as “One Armed Bandit” and “Mary Kaye’s Baby” and “High Octane” were genuine. The Boar’s Nest was an actual cement-block roadhouse, Uncle Jesse’s farm was a real GA farm, and the original HC Sheriff’s department was a real police station.
When the inevitable move of DOH filming to CA occurred, Warner Bros did it’s best to recreate the structural features of the original episodes. The scenic details that Warner Bros left out of CA DOH production are few, but nonetheless notable for their absence. Georgia pines, moody weather, and rough-looking natives were common sights in the original episodes. The CA production kept the bright, shiny aspects of the show, but discarded the true elements of Georgia along the way.
Fortunately, the cast of The Dukes of Hazzard made a success of the program despite this challenge. For the fans, Hazzard County is more than a particular dirt road or a town square, no matter it’s location. Hazzard County is where our friends are. The first season was the ground-breaking for a program that would become “home” for fans around the world. Let’s take a look at where it all began…
