It's time for the annual Hazzard Hoedown, which includes a rattlesnake-sacking contest and ax catching among its attractions. This year's musical guest is country star Toby Keith, who joins a list of stars helping to raise money for a new hospital in Hazzard. As Rosco announces how much money they've raised, Ezra Bushmaster, a former crooked partner of Boss Hogg, says that if the county can raise $500,000 in the next 10 days, he'll donate the remaining $3,000,000. From out of the crowd, a man introducing himself as music promoter B.B. Bascomb tells everyone that he can raise the money by selling the tapes of the previous hoedowns. The only catch is that the remixing and mastering fees are $35,000 - the same amount as they currently have in the fund for the hospital.
Undeterred, Bo, Luke, Daisy, Rosco, Cletus and Cooter set off on a three-day drive to Los Angeles. Not long into the journey, Rosco has a tire on his RV shot out by a patch-wearing crook and his assistant who hope to scare them off. The crooks' plan fails, Cooter fixes the tire, and the Hazzardites continue to LA, eventually pitching camp in Griffith Park. At the campsite they are visited by Enos who's now a successful LAPD detective. Enos tells them they're not allowed to camp there, but with some persuasion from Daisy, he offers to get the necessary permits for them. On the way to City Hall, Enos foils a robbery (on his day off). It soon becomes clear that everyone seems to know and like Enos, and he's especially popular with the ladies.

Back at the campsite, the crooks who shot out Rosco's tire steal his RV with their money and tapes in it. Bo and Luke are in close pursuit when they stop to help someone being beaten in the street. Despite being outnumbered, they beat off the attackers just before the victim's brother, Cypriano, and his friends turn up in a pair of lowriders. The victim quickly tells his brother that the boys saved him, and once they determine that's he's OK, they start comparing cars. Cypriano's car can "dance" with its air suspension, but he can't see the appeal of the General until Bo takes him for ride and jumps some road works. With a friendship formed, Cypriano says he'll keep and eye out for the RV, and invites the boys at a block party. Meanwhile, Rosco and Cletus try to ask some of the locals about the RV, but they all reply in foreign languages or slang.
At the block party, Bo falls for Cypriano's sister, Gabriela, who's providing the musical entertainment. Cypriano also tells the boys that he's found the RV at Tio Paco's chop shop. When they get there, all they find is the part of the side wall with the buzzard painted on it.
While Patch and his accomplice keep an eye on the campsite, some Russians turn up looking for the tapes. Bo tricks them into thinking they still have one, and manage to escape in the General. They end up back at Tio Paco's where they find evidence that the thieves had followed them across the country.
Needing money, Rosco goes off in search of a bank loan, but only gets his driver's license shredded in an ATM. He's then befriended by Freddy the Ferret, who takes him to meet loan shark Sharon. He borrows $20,000 with the condition that he has to pay back $30,000 within 72 hours. Outside, Rosco gets robbed by Patch, and goes back to tell Sharon about the stolen money. She explains that it was his money that was stolen, and he stills owes her.
Across town, Patch tries to frame the Dukes for receiving a racing engine paid for with stolen car parts. The defrauded yard owner, Deacon, attempts to tow the General, but the boys appear and tell he about their unusual anti-theft device - rattlesnakes. Deacon realizes that Patch was lying, and also says that her junk yard has the replacement transmission they need for the General. While negotiating a price, she lets them taste her barbecued meat, and the Dukes introduce her to Uncle Jesse's famous sauce. Deacon's so impressed that she lets them have the transmission on credit in return for learning the secret ingredient in the sauce. Luke sees that Bo is interested in Gabriela, but Bo's not sure what to do. Luke confides that he once let the love of his life get away because he was afraid to commit. He also reveals that he sent her off to Nashville become a star. Bo knew some of the story, but Luke had never told him that the old flame was country star Anita Blackwell.
Daisy tries to raise some money by selling her motorcycle, but ends up at a movie studio spending the night filming stunts. Bo and Luke return to the campsite to hear about Rosco's loan shark. Soon after they get there, a limo arrives. They think it's the Russians back again, but it turns out to be Anita Blackwell. Luke takes her for a walk and confesses that he still loves her.
Patch contacts the Russians to say that he has the tapes, and they agree to meet at The Bloody Bucket (because it's Saturday!). While Bo spends a romantic evening with Gabriela at Griffith Observatory, Luke and Enos go to question B.B. Bascomb. They find that that's not his real name, and that he has a history of music fraud. He tells them about Igor and the meeting at The Bloody Bucket.
The Bloody Bucket is a line dancing club, and Patch turns up with the tapes. Bo, Luke and Gabriela follow them back to Igor's warehouse. The boys go inside and get captured, only escaping in the morning when an earthquake distracts their captors. Rosco's also being held captive, but by Sharon. Luckily, Enos shows up and tells Sharon she's breaking her probation by lending money. Rosco saves her from arrest when he convinces her to make the money a gift (with an extra $10,000 on top). Gabriela contacts Daisy on the CB, and she comes to the boys' rescue with a prop spear gun. Their escape is also helped by Cypriano and Deacon. As they pack up at the campsite, Enos presents them with a $50,000 check, which is a reward for catching the music pirates. Daisy says that they should all go back to Hollywood the following year to raise money for a veterinary clinic.
Back in Hazzard, they find out that Ezra Bushmaster was behind the whole scheme as revenge for being double-crossed in the past. He also announces that he's running for sheriff and boss. Bo's concerned because he can't get hold of Gabriela, but she and various family members turn up in an old school bus. Cooter discovers that Uncle Jesse's final secret ingredient is pickled scuppernongs, and that Deacon thinks that he's "a very attractive man". Toby Keith keeps his promise to play at the ground-breaking, and he's joined on stage by Anita Blackwood.

Despite the last movie starting with everyone returning to Hazzard, this one starts with nearly everyone apparently back living there as if they'd never left. One of those missing is Uncle Jesse, who has passed since the previous movie. It's also strange that he left his barbecue sauce recipe to Cooter rather than Bo, Luke or Daisy.
Maybe modern influences had to creep in with the main characters being transplated to Hollywood (for a second time), but it's still a little odd seeing Daisy with an early mobile phone in her hand rather than using the CB.
With Rosco and Cletus among the Hazzard residents heading for Hollywood, and Enos already in Los Angeles, no mention is made of who's upholding the law back home. With the number of crimes we saw across seven seasons of the show, it seems strange that they'd leave the town unguarded.
The stunt count certainly dropped after the end of the TV series. The previous movie used mostly recycled stunt footage, and this movie made do with a single General Lee jump and lukewarm chase at the end.
The scene where Rosco tries to use the ATM was obviously designed to further highlight the difference between Hazzard and the big city, but it seems very forced. While Hazzard might not have an ATM, they have been around since the late-60s. The scene might have been more believable if it had been part of the show's original run.
The makers of the original show often went to great lengths to hide brand names (remember the silver tape over the badges on the patrol car hoods?), but many are on display here. For example, Cletus is driving a Dodge truck, and boxes marked with brands like Samsung and JVC are clearly visible in the Russians' warehouse.

Plot Summary

A picture from Rosco's RV

Commentary
