Plot Summary

The start of the race

It's time for the First Annual J.D. Hogg Hazzard Derby, with an entry fee of $200 and a first prize of $1,000. Bo and Luke are confident of their chances, even when Cooter reveals that he's taken a second mortgage on his farm to pay for an old Cale Yarborough engine in his car. What none of them realize is that the small print on the entry form says that all losing or withdrawn cars become the property of Boss Hogg. To make matters worse, Cooter hurts his foot while helping Bo and Luke change a tire during a test run, which means that he can't drive. Figuring that the boys owe it to their friend, Jesse tells Luke that he'll have to drive Cooter's car to try and prevent Boss getting his hands on it.

Of course, Boss doesn't like leaving things to chance, so he enters his own secret weapon - Rosco in a car illegally fitted with nitrous oxide. Thinking that he can't lose, Boss places a $5,000 bet on Rosco with the biggest bookie in the tri-county area, Ma Harper. Ma Harper realizes that the race must be fixed, so she also makes a $5,000 bet on Rosco with another bookie. When Boss hears that Cooter is out of the race, and before he learns that Luke is taking his place, both bets get doubled. To help ensure Rosco's victory, Ma Harper puts two of her boys in the race to keep Rosco safe, and steals Cooter's car just before the start.

Bo and Luke manage to track down the stolen car, and after wrestling with Junior, they get back to the race just after all the other cars have left. Rosco quickly runs two of his rivals off the road, and then employs other dirty tricks such as nails on the road. Cletus rolls his car after trying to drive through Rosco's smoke screen, and Ma Harper's boys crash into each other, leaving just Bo, Luke and Rosco in a race for the finishing line.
