			Willow Creek, Alaska is facing the prospect of a bleak Christmas after the cannery, a major local employer, shut down. Trucking business owner Al Bensinger (Hoyt Axton) wants to surprise his home town by taking up a truckload of presents from his base in California, but ill health makes him change his plans. While Al stays in California, he employs brothers Pete (Tom Wopat)) and Ray (John Schneider) to make the run.

			Pete and Ray don't see eye to eye, and are barely on speaking terms at the start of their journey. Pete also has to bring along his teenage son, Michael (Zachary Ansley), who is angry with his truck-driving father for his long absences from home. Along the way, matters are complicated further when they pick up Ray's pregnant estranged wife, Jessie (Kim Delaney), who Pete had dated after his first wife died.

			The four are finally nearing Willow Creek when they get stuck in blizzard. A passing shepherd named Domingo (Paul Beckett) leads them to the shelter of a nearby house, where he acts as midwife during the birth of Ray and Jessie's child. Outside, the brothers clear the air with a fist fight, but re-enter the house when they hear the baby crying.

			Next morning, the people of Willow Creek find the truck in a snow drift, but there's no sign of Domingo, his sheep, or even the house. Back in town, the presents are unloaded, and Ray finds several sides of frozen beef in the back of the truck. He realizes that Al wants him to put his chili-making skills to use (Ray was runner-up in a coast-to-coast chili making contest) and re-open the cannery. Ray and Jessie decide to stay in Willow Creek with their new baby, and Pete tells Michael that Al's offered him a partnership in the trucking business, so he won't be away from home anymore.
