The Return of the Mean Green Machine.....season 5

(I will be referring to it as "the MGM")

While playing frisbee with a pretty girl named Bonnie out in the country, Vance notices some tracks and realizes they are from the MGM. He calls Coy over and Vance decides that the discovery is important enough to cut the double date short and start investigating. Meanwhile, one million dollars worth of gold coins are on display for one day only at the Hazzard Gold Gold and Silver Emporium. They were once owned by Jefferson Davis and now Jefferson Davis Hogg is planning on stealing them by using the MGM. He hired a couple guys to operate it but two other bad guys named Hatfield and Baxter stole it from them. (Hatfield was the original owner, along with a guy named Scroggins). Coy and Vance try to stop it and are unsuccessful but they did damage it with a dynamite arrow. Hatfield and Baxter then go to Cooter's and tie up Jesse then take Cooter with them because they need the MGM fixed. Jesse got loose and the 4 Dukes met at Cooter's Garage while Cooter was fixing the machine. The bad guys tied Cooter's hands and forced him into the MGM and went to town, but not before a failed attempt by Rosco to stop it with a bazooka. He had it aimed backwards and destroyed the patrol car. The MGM busted through the wall of the Emporium and used it's big magnet to snatch the chest the gold coins were in. While it was doing that, Daisy was able to stick a tracking device on it that Vance got from Bonnie, who worked at WHOGG radio. Boss and Rosco took Emma Tisdale's motorcycle with sidecar from her and Enos. Rosco drove while Boss sat in the sidecar with the bazooka. Along with the General, they started chasing the MGM. Boss wasn't a very good shot. He blew up a still and then an outhouse. Jesse buried some dynamite in the road and timed the lighting just right to stop the MGM. Cooter got rescued. The chest got returned. The bad guys went to jail. Cooter bought the Dukes beer and donuts.....and the MGM came up missing again!

-- The outhouse was the same video of the one blowing up at the start of the series. The still was also repeat video....Follow That Still....and at least one more other episode I believe.

-- Enos mentioned his old partner in Los Angeles, Turk. I was lucky enough to see all those "Enos" episodes.

-- Hey Skipper.....After Vance gave Coy directions to pull closer to the MGM, Coy said. "Aye Aye Skipper."

Rosco to Boss "You're the only man I know that can steal a man's teeth and come back for the gums."

-- Waylon mentioned that Vance played linebacker for Hazzard High

-- Boss ..."Like I always say, the best offense is a bigger offense." Rosco...."Right, and I tell ya, we are the most offensive people in these parts."

Ding, Dong, The Boss is Dead.....season 5

Coy and Vance run across stranded motorists named Lorna and Matt who claim to be brother and sister. They drive them into town and take them to the hotel. Lorna and Matt start acting suspicious and are very interested in Boss Hogg. When they get to their hotel room they start kissing and we find out that they are not brother and sister after all. Lorna steals a car and her and Matt make their first attempt on Boss's life by dropping a scaffolding near him. They then drive away from the scene and the 3 younger Dukes chase them, not knowing who is in the car but they get away. Lorna then calls a guy in Atlanta named Floyd Calloway. Boss had testified against him long ago and now Calloway is out of jail and has hired Lorna and Matt to kill Boss. Matt disconnect Boss's brake line but the Dukes save him before he crashes. At Boss's house a bomb shows up but Boss gets saved again and then finds out that Calloway is behind the 3 attempts on his life. Boss and Lulu hide out at the Duke farm and Vance gets the idea to fake Boss's death so Lorna and Matt will leave town.....since the Dukes have figured out that they are the would-be-assassins. Lorna and Matt call Calloway but he wants more proof Boss is dead so he tells them to go to the funeral and see the body. The funeral is at the Boar's Nest and everybody except Lorna, Matt and Enos knows Boss is faking it. They didn't want Enos to know because he is too honest. Lorna and Matt don't know that they are suspects so they think it is safe to see Boss's "body", which they do. Boss gets hauled off in the Hearse and heads to the cemetery when Calloway shows up at the Boar's Nest wanting to see the body for himself. Things get complicated when the casket falls out going down the road but the Dukes get everything put back in place before Calloway arrives. He opens the casket and tempts Boss with the smell of food but Boss doesn't budge, so Calloway leaves, thinking Boss is dead. The reason Boss didn't react to the smell of food is because he had passed out from fear.  When Enos sees Boss pop out of the casket he faints. Later, Calloway, Lorna and Matt get arrested.

Cousin Roger... Great review as always! Floyd Calloway says "Now I believe it! If that fat water buffalo don't react to food, he's dead!"

Did you spot that Melanie Vincz (Lavinia) previously appeared as one of the Pretty Piggy contestants in Return of the Ridge Raiders?

Amanda Horan Kennedy (Lorna) was the other credited Pretty Piggy contestant in 'Return of the Ridge Raiders'. Both Melanie and Amanda had to wait three seasons to return to Hazzard with bigger roles, one trying to rip off Boss and one trying to kill him!

Coy vs Vance.....season 5

The Dukes are returning home from the State Fair in Hatchapee County. Vance, Daisy and Jesse are driving the General Lee and Coy is driving a dirt bike with a girl on back. That girl is Billie Ann Baxley. Her and her sister Kate own a motorcycle stunt show and they just got done performing at the fair. After the General and the bike do a side by side jump Coy takes Billie Ann back to town and then returns to the farm where Vance is irritated that Coy is spending so much time with Billie Ann and ignoring his responsibilities at the farm. Later, two robbers disguised at motorcycle cops pull Rosco and Boss over in Boss's Cadillac and take all their valuables after they too were returning from the fair. They had helmets on so weren't recognizable. Moments later we learn that Billie Ann and Kate are the robbers. Coy is getting increasingly irritated at Vance for thinking that something isn't quite right with Billie Ann because he is falling deeper and deeper for her. Enos then spots the robbers in the act but goes into the pond after an unsuccessful chase. At the farm, after overhearing Vance suspect the sisters of being the robbers, Coy is outraged and leaves the farm with Daisy's Jeep to live in Cooter's garage. They later get in a fist fight when Vance tries to look in the girls' van to see if the police motorcycles were in there. Vance didn't find any evidence and then felt bad for suspecting them. Boss was so mad the case hadn't been solved yet that he made Enos sheriff and demoted Rosco to deputy. Enos then let it slip to Vance and the Baxley's that he, Rosco and Boss would be moving bags of money from the Boar's Nest to the bank on Sunday morning. Jesse got a phone call from Hatchapee that the Baxleys probably were thieves. At dawn, Vance confronts the girls as they are planning on leaving to rob Boss. Billie Ann  knocks him out and Kate ties him up. Jesse and Daisy explained to Coy that the girls likely are thieves and then tell him Vance is missing. After finding Vance, Coy is upset about trusting Billie Ann. The Dukes figure that the Baxleys are going to take Boss's money, so go to help, knowing Boss, Rosco and Enos might need it. After a chase, Billie Ann and Kate do end up with the money bags. Boss then makes Rosco sheriff again. The Dukes show up at the Baxley's hideout and the girls trade their street bikes for dirt bikes but it doesn't help them since the General Lee can catch anything on wheels. Everybody ends up happy except Coy, who got his heart broke.

-- This episode is a lot like Carnival of Thrills. A blond Duke boy falls in love with a girl who works at a stunt show. His dark haired cousin objects to the relationship. They fight with fists and one leaves the farm. The girl turns out bad and a heart gets broken but the cousins make up.

-- Funny scene at a road construction sight when Rosco ends up with an outhouse on his car roof with a worker inside.

-- Only 2 more Coy and Vance episodes left

Excellent work Cousin Roger as always! My brother has an ex girlfriend Katie Marie Hanes who looks like the Billie Ann actress.

Comrade Duke.....season 5

Daisy is flying higher than the General Lee in the opening scene. She is in the back seat of an old bi-plane taking flying lessons from Darcy Kincade. At the same time, a bus with a Russian gymnastic team in it, is out in the country with a sputtering engine and it ends up limping into town and winds up at Cooter's Garage. Cooter fixes it while the team remains in the bus but one of the gymnasts wants a better life in America so she sneaks out and hides in the back of Jesse's truck, which happens to be close to the bus. Vance then hops in the truck and drives away and Daisy and Coy follow in the General. Before they make it back to the farm Daisy notices something moving and when Vance pulls over, the 3 Dukes meet Natasha, who tells them she is defecting. She falls for Coy right away. They take her back to Jesse at the farm. After leaving town in the bus , one of the Russian agents notice Natasha is missing. They order the bus go back to town and drop off two agents and tell the bus to go to Atlanta without them.  They then go to Boss and Rosco for help and explain how serious the situation is. They also describe Jesse's truck and the General Lee to Boss so all four of them head out to the Duke farm in Rosco's car. After Natasha explains to the Dukes that she has relatives in Detroit, the four show up at the farm but the boys sneak Natasha out into the General but then are spotted and after a chase, get away when Rosco's car is cut in half. Later, the agents blow up the phone lines leading out of town and the four Dukes meet in a secret location with Natasha. They go to a rural phone booth to try call call the FBI but the phone doesn't work. At the same time, a small army of Russian agents have arrived to join the search. After another chase, the Dukes manage to elude the agents and go to Cooter's but his phone doesn't work for calls out of town. After getting the idea to fly Natasha out of Hazzard, Darcy spills the beans on the CB and everybody arrives at the airport at nearly the same time. A big fight breaks out and the agents take Natasha and have Boss lock her in jail. Enos told the Dukes what was going on and revealed the plan the agents had to get her out of Hazzard. With the information Enos gave them, the Dukes and Cooter were able to rescue her. With Darcy still woozy from the big fight, Daisy made her first solo flight. Coy and Natasha stood on the trunk of a moving General Lee, hanging on to ropes, looking like a couple of water skiers while Daisy dropped down a rope ladder. Natasha climbed in the plane and Daisy flew her out of Hazzard to safety. Later, she appeared in Washington DC, proudly on a path to become a US citizen. And, for the second episode in a row, Coy gets his heart broken....but Uncle Jesse explained that they may meet again.

Witness: Jesse Duke.....season 5

Jesse goes to Capitol City to take out a loan for the farm while Boss is busy negotiating on buying gasoline pumps that are designed to cheat customers. The seller tells Boss that if he doesn't meet him at a certain time and place that Boss will lose his $10,000 down payment. While walking on the street in Capitol City on the way to the bank, Jesse stops in front of a jewelry store to help an old lady when two robbers, named Parker and Hanson jump out of the store and run into Jesse. A tussle follows and Jesse momentarily rips the ski mask off one of the robbers and can now identify him. The robber knocks Jesse to the ground so hard that he winds up in the hospital blinded, the doctor claiming it could be permanent. The 3 other Dukes rush to Capitol City and later the bad guys hear about Jesse on the radio and decide to go kill him, even though the one who's mask wasn't ripped off really didn't want to. Jesse goes home since he is otherwise healthy and starts to figure out how to maneuver around the house without sight. The bad guys figure out where Jesse lives and the younger Dukes take him to Boss and convince him to keep Jesse at his house for safety. Lulu is out of town at her sister Hortense's house in Decatur. Boss, Rosco and Jesse are having a good time at Boss's house when Parker and Hanson show up at the farm to kill Jesse. They were walking into a Duke trap but Enos accidently ruined it by showing up. The Dukes and Enos chased them but they got away. Boss and Rosco left the house to pick up the phony gas pumps because if Boss didn't he would lose 10 grand. The bad guys then showed up but before they drug him off, Jesse was able to get a May Day call for help on the CB that he was in trouble. As they were driving away. Jesse couldn't see where they were going but he was paying attention to other things like turns, smells and sounds. They stopped at the entrance of a cave and were intending to shoot him but he ducked in the cave. While they were searching for him he came out and disabled their car by pulling spark plug wires out. There was no CB in the car to call anybody so he went into the woods before they got back. In the woods he was able to use his experience to get around even though he still couldn't see. He started a fire and the other Dukes saw the smoke and picked him up, with Boss, Rosco and Enos joining in. Parker and Hanson fixed the car and Jesse recalled the sounds and smells of his car trip and figured out where the bad guys were. After a short chase Parker and Hanson got beat up by Coy and Vance and arrested by the Hazzard law. After a few days rest the bandages were taken off of Jesse's eyes when the doctor was visiting the farm and he could see just fine. Boss lost his $10,000 because he came back to help Jesse and missed his appointment but he was so happy Jesse was okay that he didn't seem to mind.

-- This is the last we see of Coy and Vance except for a brief appearance at the beginning of the next episode.

-- This episode was pretty serious....not as fun-filled as most.

--- You just have to love 'ole Jesse. The younger Dukes didn't want to leave him alone at the farm. Coy asked "What if you fall?" Jesse simply responded "Well, I'd just get up."

Welcome Back Bo 'n' Luke.....season 5

The Miss Tri-County beauty contest is going on and Boss is about to announce the winner. Seconds ago, a yellow Mustang pulled into the Boar's Nest parking lot and two men in racing clothes and wearing helmets got out of the car. They had just finished hot-rodding around, driving through the county, pulling tricks like driving on two wheels. They walk in and remove their helmets at the same time Boss is talking and their presence throws him off his train of thought. "The winners are....Bo and Luke Duke!" The arrival of the boys was a huge surprise to Boss, and also to a joyous Jesse and Daisy. Cooter was supposed to be one of the judges at the contest but was working in his garage. A $5,000 balloon payment was due and he had been working overtime and even moonlighting in a garage out of town. Boss wanted the garage so he could tear it down and build a shopping mall. Later, back at the Duke farm, Coy and Vance announce that they are leaving because Aunt Bessie and Uncle Elbert are in desperate need of help. Bo surprises Daisy and Jesse with the Mobile Cup, the trophy they won by beating the best NASCAR drivers in the country. The next thing you know, there was an emotional good-bye and the new Duke boys become the old Duke boys as Coy and Vance disappear in a cloud of dust in the yellow Mustang. Bo and Luke then hopped in the General Lee and on the way to Hazzard the radiator that Cooter had just fixed, blew while playfully running from Enos. A happy reunion with Cooter didn't last when Cooter became grumpy. It was clear that he was exhausted and had been working too hard. He refused to tell them about possibly losing the garage. The boys then went to the Boar's Nest and ran into NASCAR driver Petey Willis, his daughter Sarah Ann and his back up driver, Joey. Petey had just come out of retirement and wanted just one more win, the Atlanta 500. Sarah Ann was worried about her father and Joey then made a suspicious phone call. Petey asked the Dukes if they knew a good mechanic and before you know it, Cooter's head was under Petey's #55 car's hood. Enos and Rosco's cars break down while chasing the Dukes and the boys worry about letting Cooter work on Petey's car since his work doesn't appear to be up to the usual standards. Jesse went to talk to Cooter with the boys but he still wouldn't say what the problem was. Later, with the garage unattended, Joey did something bad under the hood of Petey's car that caused the engine to blow when Petey was testing it. Petey was hurt real bad and ended up in the hospital. Sarah Ann blamed the Dukes and Cooter blamed himself so he sold the garage to Boss and drove off to live the life of a hermit in the hills but first stopped at Petey's hospital room to drop off the money from the sale of the garage. The 4 Dukes find out about Cooter's money troubles and also find out that Joey switched the fuel lines, replacing a high performance line with a standard one. Bo and Luke expose Joey's dirty deed to Sarah Ann and catch him at the old circus train after a chase. Daisy pretended to be skinny dipping and took the deed to the garage out of Rosco's car as he was heading to Atlanta to file it. Jesse caught up with Cooter and convinced him to come back to town. Joey got arrested. Petey healed. Cooter got his garage back and Bo and Luke were back for good.

-- Despite the sad loss of Coy and Vance, this episode must rank amongst one of the favorites of every Duke fan. It was not just historic to Dukes fans but to everybody. I remember it well. Everybody was talking about it back then, whether you were a Dukes fan or not. I also remember smiling the entire episode, every time Bo and Luke were on the screen. Well, except when Petey got hurt of course!

-- It really was cool to see all 4 Duke boys in the opening song....a truly unique open.

Cousin Roger... I love it I love it!

Big Brothers, Duke.....season 5

Bo and Luke join the Big Brothers program and go to Capitol City to pick up Andy Slocum, who only joined BB because he was caught breaking into their building. Andy is big trouble. The first thing he does is steal the General Lee. The boys borrow a truck and chase him, with the Capitol City law right behind. After catching him, the Duke boys decide not to press charges and take him back to the farm. Bo is a bit pessimistic about reforming their little brother but Luke is determined to not give up on him. Meanwhile, Boss is upset. He hasn't scammed anybody in 2 weeks and his depression has made him lose his appetite and lose weight but that changes when he gets a call from a fellow who just robbed 2 guards who were carrying money out of the Capitol City bank and preparing to put it in their armored car. The robber is desperate to get rid of the dirty money and agrees with Boss to sell it for 10 cents on the dollar. Andy gets into Hazzard where he continues to do bad stuff while Bo continues his irritation and Luke continues to have hope. The robber takes the stolen money to Boss and Boss gets his appetite back because he is planning on making a quick profit by selling it to a money launderer named Barney at 25 cents on the dollar. After the robber leaves he gets caught by the FBI and Boss learns the FBI is coming to investigate so he hides the money in one of Jesse's old still sights. Andy starts to learn farmwork and starts to like it and it looks like he is becoming reformed. To show him he trusts him (and also to test him) Jesse lets Andy take his pick-up truck to town. On the way, Andy sees the baby goat that had come up missing at the Duke farm. The goat just happens to be by the bag of stolen money and Andy has a tough time deciding what to do with the money. He decides to do the right thing and when he calls the Dukes on the CB to tell them about it, Barney and Boss overhear and start chasing him in Barney's van. Boss doesn't want Barney shooting at Andy and when he objects, Barney kicks him out of the van and Enos picked him up later. After Barney catches Andy, he takes the money, holds Andy hostage and drives away. Luke pulled up to the moving van in the General and Bo climbed on the roof and went through the sunroof and stopped Barney at the same time the FBI and everybody else showed up. Andy received a 500 dollar reward from the armored car company and decided to donate it to the orphanage because "Maybe some kid will get as lucky as I did."

-- Barney running around with Andy....it made me think of a show that was around before Dukes....LOL

-- I love Luke's quote "Our Uncle Jesse brought us up by the Good Book with a little common sense thrown in on the side."

-- This was interesting....to change to a different CB channel, when a Duke says "country music", that is code talk for turning it to channel 17.

I know that this is the second episode with Bo and Luke back, but after all the Coy and Vance episodes, it still feels a little odd seeing their names again. It's the same when I'm watching season 5 - I know they were the originals, but it always takes me a couple of episodes to get used to them reprising their roles.
