The Chip Away could be a BIOS virus which you might be able to cure with by flashing the BIOS from a floppy. It might also be a warning that you were trying to alter the MBR if it occurred when you were upgrading to 98 SE. I hope yo find some sort of solution soon.

That's good news, and SE is much better than FE. Who'd've thought it would stlll be useful nearly 14 years after it came out

Have you tried booting in safe mode or is it dead?. It will force the computer to use the basic drivers, but you may be able to work from there.
Is the computer without enough room for XP a desktop or laptop - if it's a desktop you could probably get a bigger HDD pretty cheaply if you have a computer exchange near you. You can get used 80Gb drives on Ebay for as little as $10 - that should be big enough for XP.

. When I moved house a few years ago my computer worked fine for a while before the HDD failed. I'd just about managed to reload everything (without an internet connection at that time) when the power supply failed. I replaced that too but it was never right after that. -
