  1. Closest to a 4x4 GL was Dixie, the 4wd Jeep CJ7.Most of the time however,it was used in 2wd mode! I guess the stuntmen liked tail happy driving rather than a 4 wheel drift in such a short wheelbase SUV. The GL was jacked up with airshocks, and turning up the torsion bars. Cooter said "Airshocks in the back and expanders in the front". Yea,expanders if it had coil springs. That would have been Nova/Malibu "bad guy" territory there.
  2. This subject has me torn.I had chatted with one of the owners of Car #71 years back, and he had it stored at his place.I asked him to check the car out underneath and give me some details. He said that it was just destroyed and fixing it would be nearly impossible. At that point,I figured that nobody would be stupid enough to try to repair it.The amount of money that would have to be spent.I always prescribed to the theory of preservation and some improvement.Like, trying to make it look more like it did as Car 71,and not a GL again.Replacing the damaged rear panel, replace the trunk floor, fixing some suspension members, add seats and roll cage back in,treat the rust to kill it.Rebuild the engine and trans so it would run again.Alas,Travis Bell had to have other ideas.Replacing nearly everything and calling it restored.I would call it "repaired" or "Fixed" not restored.Wether the drivetrain is even original is a big question, regarding what I have heard of TB's honesty.I am glad its not in the junkyard anymore rotting away, but the changes TB did,are not reverseable. It will never be that original gold Charger,LEE1,or even car 71 ever again. I just fear that this car is going to get itself in some kind of accident/crash,the way its being used so much, and all that cut-and-shut bodywork is going to come back and haunt the driver. If that ever happened, there would be no fixing LEE1 ever again. History lost.
  3. I would imagine that they got as much use out of every car they could. To the point they wouldnt run or move anymore.Seeing as how they were mainly filming on Ranch land, the vehicles would have to be trucked out en mass once they died. You would think that WB would have stripped off what parts they could (doors, fenders, trunklid, hood, lightbar) and sold the rest to the junkman.Damaging them like cutting the GLs roof flag off and crushing the roof down would pretty much preclude anyone trying to fix them later on.I think after the previous builder (not WB) did some shady stuff,re selling crashed GLs back to WB,they made sure there was no way that they would be buying their own throwaways back. The WB/LA crew (Thrasher,Sarmento....) would probably know more on that subject,if anyone here knows how to contact them.
  4. Back in the day,it was tough to find any car that approached anywhere near 100,000 miles. My guess is that a lot of the cars WB sourced came from (guess where) California, and they didnt have to drive far in their lives to get to where they needed to go.So,you could go a lot of years and not rack up more than 30K,40K,50K miles. Now try East Coast where you have to travel hundreds of miles a day to get anywhere.
