HazzardNet.com review of The Dukes of Hazzard: The Complete First Season.

It’s about time!! =)

by: MaryAnne

As a long time subscriber to the Columbia House video collection of the Dukes of Hazzard, I initially had no intention of buying the DVD set, especially if it did not have the episode “Daisy’s Song.” For some reason, that episode was never released on video and to this day I’ve never known why. But the other reason why I wasn’t planning to purchase the DVD set initially was because I already had all these episodes (except Daisy’s Song) on video un-cut and un-interrupted. I was leary on achieving duplicity with the DOH episodes especially upon reminding myself of how much money I’ve dished out in the past two or three years for the videos. (DVD set, 13 episodes, 30 bucks. CH video, 1 tape, 2 episodes per tape, 23.94. You do the math. LOL).

However, once learning the The Complete First Season was really and truly the complete first season of the Dukes, I decided to buy the set and I can truthfully say that it was 30 bucks well spent.

As expected the episodes are un-cut and have been well restored in image and in sound. The clarity of some of the episodes is striking and blows the grainy stuff that ran on TNN a few years ago right out of the water. If you have a DVD player on your computer or laptop and it has an image grab function, you will not be dissapointed. The clarity is very good.

The extras on the DVD include footage of the 25th Anniversary BBQ (although it’s listed as a 20th anniversary…?), featuring John, Cathy, Sonny, Jimmie, Rick, Ben, Peggy and a member of the Dukes production crew (who’s name escapes me at the moment) and also the General Lee (as driven by John). The BBQ is great in that the cast is gathered on a backlot somewhere, enjoying a true BBQ dinner and talking of the memories of working on the Dukes of Hazzard.

The next segement is Dukes Driving 101: A High Octane Salute featuring noted NASCAR personalities such as Rusty Wallace, 2003 Winston Cup Champion Matt Kenseth and other notable and upcoming drivers all commenting on the Dukes of Hazzard; Daisy Duke and General Lee in particular. Cooter wins some votes as a potential pit crew member.

A great added feature is watching One Armed Bandits with John and Cathy providing commentary. You feel like they’re right there in the living room with you, watching a home movie. Especially entertaining is hearing John remind Cathy of the “if we weren’t cousin’s I’d marry you” line from the episode and her reponse of “that never stopped anybody in this family before.” Cathy denies saying it….and then is quickly reminded that she did.

Finally, there’s a short promo for the next Dukes of Hazzard racing game titled The Return of the General Lee. The promo shows the General jumping and racing around in computer-ized Hazzard County, but the big dissapointment is the fact that the rebel flag is conspicously missing from the roof of the car. If the General Lee has returned, he’s gonna find the political correctness of the modern times to be a real pain in the catalytic converter.

The packaging is good, with some rarely and never before seen photos used. There is one glaring error on the back where Ben Jones gets a new name: Ben Cooper. But otherwise the packaging is colorful and fun. The disks themselves are actually two sided, which makes for a nice compact packaging and probably contributes to it’s affordability. In comparison the first season of the A-Team is available on DVD, has 14 episodes, there’s a total of 4 DVD’s in the set and there are no extras. It retails for about 60 bucks. Again, you do the math.

All in all, a great DVD set and a big “Yeeehaaaa!” to Warner Bros. for putting the set out during the 25th anniversary year of the first season of the Dukes of Hazzard. I love it, I love it!
